Oh man, this is a telling sign. Rumors of Apple axing it and now this. :(

I really need to upgrade, I have White Macbook, now discontinued and I'm considering grabbing another Classic since I like the extra capacity. I don't need another touch device when I have the iPhone 4.

Wow apple. Just because you want to get rid of a product does not mean that everyone will get rid of it, plus these things are still being sold. Is it me or has apple starting to loose some of its finesse?

I agree... One thing is sure they're trying to drag us into the cloud and one way or another that means us loosing money

iOS interface is crap for navigating music.
Not exactly, but I understand you base this sentiment on ad hominem, since you know, the Classic is your beloved queen of music mobility.

I know you like having all your music on one mobile medium, but that's highly unrealistic if you require 500GBs of space. Maybe you like playroom, but since when can't you switch music out? Surely you won't be listening to 80 hours of music nonstop.

Well, it's not like Apple is gonna come to your house and confiscate it from you. I am sure Apple will have a solution to people like you. Things like iCloud will eliminate need for massive flash storage on media devises. Maybe in 2-3 years.

I just like taking as much of my music with me. When I go camping for weeks at a time, the more music the play the better. My music tastes changes a lot and it's nice I have it with me for when it does.
The cloud also only works if you have access to internet, and some places i camp... good luck.

People keep talking about iCloud, but what about those of us outside of the U.S.? I would love to migrate to iCloud, and my iPod is on it's way out, so I don't know now whether I need to buy a classic before they disappear, or whether I should grin and bear it for 6 months.

And the touch is currently priced @ £336 for 64GB, and the classic is £197 for 120GB... Even if they sold a touch @ £336 for 128GB, I would still rush out and buy a classic before they all sold out, hands down! I have an iPhone, why would I want a touch also?!?

Either that, or a 128GB iPhone, but that's not going to happen either! Or a 256GB touch, so I can re-encode my music at a higher bit rate? Nope, still not going to happen! How about launching iCloud soon in the UK?! Not even a whisper!

Guess I'm in no mans land for now, and will probably have to buy an MP3 player by a different manufacturer for the first time in my life if the classic is discontinued... :(

Man, if Apple discontinues the Shuffle and Classic, they have just a few items left.

I mean, they discontinued the white Macbook.

And they're building these megaton stores and they have only like 5 products to show in them.

When you go back in time to May 2001, when the first Apple Retail Store opened, they had way less products than now. There wasn't even iPods at that time!

The Apple Retail philosophy is to value the experience, not the products. That's why they projected giant stores with 4 product lines 10 years ago.

The problem is that Apple are trying to sell us something not all of us need. A lot of us just want a box (the 120gb+ ipod) that has our tunes on it, nothing more. We have iphones or whatever etc and don't need an ipod touch, which cost more as they are more expensive to make.

Last time I checked, the classic was not that cheap! It wasn't like you were paying much more for a Touch anyways.

So who cares if it has less and you don't need more if you aren't paying less for it anyways?! That's the only advantage of getting something that doesn't do extra stuff you don't need.

I'd be ok with a 220GB HDD based touch.

I don't care so much if it is click wheel or touch, but I want the storage capacity!

All this talk about the iPod classic makes me want to go and buy one just so I can have the chance to carry a good selection of my music library with me before it's too late. I know eventually the iPod touch will get up to 128GB or 256GB in the next few years, but those don't have the durability that a good ol' clickwheel iPod has so I can keep it hooked up in my car.

I know you're all thinking that there will be a 128 GB iPod touch this year to replace the Classic.

But you're wrong. The Classic will be discontinued, and the iPod touch will remain at 64 GB maximum capacity.

Frankly, at this point anyone who really wants a Classic already has one. The market for even huger music players has got to be minuscule, and I wouldn't be surprised to see them introduce a 128 GB Touch next week, which probably comes close enough for most people's purposes. I'm not saying it's completely nonexistent, but it's probably not worth it to Apple to continue making them.

There is a major problem with a 128GB Touch ... it's going to cost $399 or $499, completely crazy. For those of us who want our entire music collection (and already have iPhones), there is no need for a iTouch as well. I was hoping that new 220GB drive would end up in a new Classic, 160GB for $249 is much better than $399/$499 for 128GB.

Also ... I use my iPhone for music, but I find my old 60GB Classic much easier to use while driving than my iPhone, I'm def ganna pick up a 160GB Classic if they indeed get axed.

Also, this Cloud thing is crazy, it's not going to replace peoples music collection. Are we all streaming to an iPhone with unlimited data? iTouch has no data connection if them come out with a high capacity model, I listen to music mostly in the car. They are axing a market and not replacing it, bs.

I'm talking about much more than 80 hours - my library is something like 2 or 3 weeks long according to the metric at the bottom of iTunes.

You're right that I could switch out music. But why should I have to? And if it is no big deal, why don't all just carrt 512MB players? They can hold an album or two, which is all we really need on any given day. But I want to plug the thing in my car, burying it in the armrest, sync it about 3 or 4 times a year, and have most everything I'd want to listen to with me. If Apple had continued to follow the course they followed from 2001-2008, I'd have at least 440GB now, which would be great. But they decided not to. It wouldn't have cost them anything, to do so, they just decided not to.

You're also right that my opinon on the iOS interface being crap is just that - my opinon. So be it. But it is crap. Try navigating your library on a iTouch while leaving it in your pocket. Not too easy. And don't come back about using the controller on the earbuds. If you're content to use the Apple earbuds, you're part of the problem.

iCloud in itself seems stupid. If I want extra storage online, then I'll use my website because I'm already paying for that. I don't pay for my music so why start paying to have it stored?

Your website? Yea I'm sure that integrates real nicely with the iOS Music App.

Don't be a dope. iCloud does not seem stupid. It seems brilliant. And considering I've been using it for months, I can tell you it is.

But, then again, if that wasn't immediately obvious to you the moment you heard what it was, then it never will be.

Oh and its free.

And iTunes Match is only $25 a YEAR, to forgive all of your pirated music.

The 64GB iPod touch costs 70% more (in the UK) than the 160GB classic for only 40% of the storage capacity.

If you are only after a high capacity music player then that's pretty poor value for money compared to the classic.

I never owned the original iPod. But it's just natural to see how the iPhone is the go-to iPod now. I will miss the shuffle though. It clips on my hat perfectly... I'll absolutely have to buy one before they're gone.

LOL of course you would because it doesn't even occur to you that no iOS product has ever run off an HDD, or that iOS has never been designed for or even compatible with anything but flash storage.

This place is a frigging riot today.

Despite your mountain of logic, people don't buy the Classic anymore.

I might just get one and hold onto it till my current one bites it. I keep my classic in my car and use it everyday. Call me a minority but I don't use my iPhone as an iPod, they are two different things. I like a dedicated mp3 player.

If they introduce a 128 GB Touch, it kind of reduces the market for Classics down to next to nothing; especially when coupled with Cloud services.

Not really, the touch would be twice the price with less storage, if I want visual I use my iPhone, my classic stores my large amount of music files, I listen in the car, I don't look.

I've never really looked at other mp3 players, but man the iPod classic really is the best option out there. Hardly anyone offers more than 8GB of space. What's the deal with that?
