Apple today announced that it has renamed its Beats 1 radio station to Apple Music 1. The radio station can be accessed through the Radio tab in the Music app across the iPhone, iPad, Mac, and other devices, with no Apple Music subscription required.

Launched in 2015, the newly renamed Apple Music 1 is a 24-hour live radio station broadcast by Zane Lowe, Ebro Darden, and other DJs out of studios in Los Angeles, New York, Nashville, and London. Apple describes the station as "the center for pop culture conversation and artist-led programming, and the global destination for artists from around the world to release new music, break news, and speak directly to their fans."

Apple also announced that it is launching two additional live radio stations. "Apple Music Hits" will play popular songs from the 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s, while "Apple Music Country" will spotlight country music.

Finally! I had been calling for this for years. Beats 1 was a good idea in principle but the entire world does not have the same musical taste. Whenever I’d think to give Beats 1 another chance, invariably it’d be either Trap or Grime, depending on whether the DJ was in the US or UK.

I had been hoping for more stations in world capitals to get a better cross section of the world‘s musical preferences (Beats Toronto, Beats Rio, Beats Tokyo, etc) but new stations by genre works too.

I wish Apple Music had a better interface for listening to recordings of their radio show. I love listening to old episode of the Alligator Hour but it’s a terrible UI. When you are in the middle of an episode and close up, it won’t resume your place like a podcast so I begin a 1 hour episode from the beginning again.

This is one of those cases where they should have used "i", iRadio 1.

I hope Apple Music Hits can compete with Sirus XM Hits 1. This has been on my wishlist for years.
Well, then they'd be going back in time... iTunes became Music, remember? the "i" prefix is only kept in place for hardware, for as far as I can remmeber.
But I agree, it would have been a lot better.

I think Apple should acquire SiriusXM and integrate that. Maybe then their CarPlay app would actually work.

Is anyone actually listening to live radio? Feels like Apple is betting on the wrong horse. Playlists is where it's at, not live radio stations.

Centralizing the experience only works to some degree. Apple Music is like an iPhone without the App Store. They need to start building a community like Spotify and let users play a more active part on the platform. I assume that ship has sailed, though.

"Hey Shania Twain, we're launching some new radio stations."

"Yeah, what are they called?"

"It's a bit of a secret, but one of them is going to end with 'Hits' and the other is 'Country'"

"So Beats Country and Beats Hits? Last one's a bit of a tongue twister. Gotta be careful to type it up right, too"

"Hmmm"

"So, What Made You Say That?"

"We want you to host a radio show"

"When"

"From This Moment On"

"That Don't Impress Me Much!"

"Ok. Bye." ... "Hey Geoff, screw Shania! She thinks her jokes are better than ours. Lets put her show on Apple Music Hits instead"

---

The above might not have happened, but really, what's the thought process?

Wowwww finally. Why can’t it just be Apple Music Radio 1?

They gonna call their bundle of services Apple 1 too right?

EDIT: Ok so the article is wrong Lol it’s not Apple Music 1.

RIP SiriusXM Radio!
SiriusXM Hits 1 Radio
SiriusXM Highway Country Radio

Apple definitely needs to redesign the live radio interface for ease of radio station access and CarPlay functionality with 10-15 live radio presets.

Apple uses the HE-AAC high efficiency advanced audio codec for their live streaming audio so the sound quality from the new live radio channels should be very very good. Listening now on my homepods, the SQ does sound really good!

Live Apple Music Radio stations need to be a feature for iOS alarms!Would be so nice to wake up to local radio or one of these “new” stations for morning alarm!

On another note: I still see Beats 1 here... Sweden. Feels so old skool to listen to right now.

Same in the US. I'm assuming it'll update like a webpage reload at some point here. The full release on the Apple webpage doesn't mention the specifics of how it's coming.
