Is anyone actually listening to live radio? Feels like Apple is betting on the wrong horse. Playlists is where it's at, not live radio stations.

Centralizing the experience only works to some degree. Apple Music is like an iPhone without the App Store. They need to start building a community like Spotify and let users play a more active part on the platform. I assume that ship has sailed, though.

I remember Zane Lowe said in an interview that it’s not so much about live radio, but rather the on-demand shows they create from it that matters. Sounds like a lot of people choose to listen to these shows as standalone afterwards, so as Spotify is heavying up on podcasts, it makes sense for them to double down on creating original shows by today’s most influential artists.

So... when is this supposed to launch? The press release doesn’t say and the Radio tab still just shows Beats 1

There are placeholders showing up in the OS X Apple Music app. It says "Tune in at 9am PT." for all 3 station tiles.

Well, then they'd be going back in time... iTunes became Music, remember? the "i" prefix is only kept in place for hardware, for as far as I can remmeber.
But I agree, it would have been a lot better.
We still have iMovie, and iTunes on Windows. And iOS, iCloud and iMessages. Also iWork, though the name is rarely used anymore.
Apart from that, it's all hardware: iMac, iPod, iPad and iPhone.

What we don't have anymore: iPhoto, iDVD, iWeb, iBooks, iBooks Author, iSync, iChat, and iCal. And for hardware, the iBook. We also don't have iTools anymore, iDisk, and iLife (now just the separate apps).

At least, that's what I remember. I might be missing a few.

Because Apple Music isn't confusing enough, let's add another variation! It's almost like they want to make it as confusing as iTunes.

Apple Music 1 is actually a good name, cause dj’s will likely shorten it to “AM1” and that sounds awesome.

”You’re listening to AM1, nothing but the best pop music!”

iForgot about iMovie and iMessage!

Should have just called it iMusic. I do think Apple Music suffers as a weak brand compared to one word brands such as iTunes and Spotify.

Their re-launch show with Zane should finally recognize and correct their biggest folly when Beats 1 launched... not playing Radio Ga-Ga as the first song was inexcusable.

They could have at least branded it "AM1" but... This whole mess is just a vestigial limb attached to Eddy Cue's tenure. Unfortunately, they can't all be Federighi.

Zane Lowe used to annoy me enough on Radio one.
Looking at the lineup for hits though I can see me tuning in to the show with Mark Hoppus, he always seemed like a laugh when he was on stage with Blink 182.

Indeed, Apple Music is already so generic as could be. Then why not keep the generic trend and call it Apple Radio 1, I mean...

They’d probably struggle to use anything that includes “Radio 1” because that is the name of an established and popular radio station in the UK, that predates Apple itself, let alone Apple Radio.

:apple:Music 1 seems like a branding decision made over email. If anyone tried to say it out loud in a conference room, I think they would have come to a different decision.

I’m curious— how much of the world listens to country music? Are they going to play American country 24/7, or will the playlist follow the sun?

This. I know classical is a ‘minority interest’ given what is popular on streaming services, but a classical show highlighting what is new in Apple Music’s classical section would be most welcome.

Deutsche Grammophon making the John Wlliams In Vienna (plus Anne-Sophie Mutter) concert film a streaming exclusive on Apple Music https://music.apple.com/gb/album/john-williams-live-in-vienna-visual-album/1513603217 should be trumpeted and promoted beyond DG’s Twitter feed.

Can’t complain too much though. Here in the UK, BBC Radio 3, Scala Radio and BBC Music magazine (via Apple News+) at least cater to my tastes. It’d just be good if AM put as much as care and attention to their classical section as some of their third-party curators do.
You have similar taste to me - scala has been a great addition to the radio 3 / classic fm duopoly.

Finally! I had been calling for this for years. Beats 1 was a good idea in principle but the entire world does not have the same musical taste. Whenever I’d think to give Beats 1 another chance, invariably it’d be either Trap or Grime, depending on whether the DJ was in the US or UK.

I had been hoping for more stations in world capitals to get a better cross section of the world‘s musical preferences (Beats Toronto, Beats Rio, Beats Tokyo, etc) but new stations by genre works too.
Amen to this!! Next will be a dance/electronic station I think.

Beats 1 wasn’t and isn’t(Apple 1) all R&B, Hip-Hop, and Grime. There were like fifty different artist shows over the past five years. Many many different types of genres and shows. I don’t think people have it a real chance(listening at different hours) or simply checking the schedule within Apple Music. It showed the shows upcoming and their local times.
That’s the problem with live global radio.

I had Julie adenuga playing really hard late night grime at 7am on my way to work.
