During the course of three separate calls, I was told by three different Apple reps that online preorders will be limited to one phone per family plan. I still find this hard to fathom, but that's what they told me. If that's the case, and I can't believe it is, I'll try ordering one from Apple and one from ATT, which might be a workaround.

Anyway, I was surprised to hear there would be rationing ... which is why I called three times.
Thanks

ok but that's for adding a new line.. what about existing lines on existing family plans?

Has anyone tried contacting ATT about doing preorders with a family plan? might have to go with them if they really go through with what we are being told
A simple upgrade of any line of a FamilyTalk rate plan currently works, worked in the past for the iPhone 3GS and is expected to continue to work in exactly the same way once the iPhone 4 is ready for pre-order (aka some damn time today). It will work as long as you can access your account from Apple. There are a very small group of FAN / account types that are not available to be serviced by Apple. We have been discussing this for a week, so there are lots and lots and lots of threads that have this exact information.

That makes a little more sense. Apple will probably limit orders by billing/shipping address. They're trying to do a worldwide launch this go around.

Customers wanting two new iPhones can wait or stand in line on launch day.

Dave, no one on here is talking about FAN discounts ( which I don't have ) I have a family plan , 1 iPhone 2G and 1 iPhone 3G. No special discount or anything else. I am upgrade eligible, so if I can upgrade through apple an get the white iPhone 4 ( which is why I have to go through apple) I will be the first one on here to say that the apple rep was wrong. Please read everything so you know what we are talking about.

Well, we will know soon enough. I have 3 iphones on a family plan and was planning on upgrading all of them through pre-order. We will see... if not, i guess I will have to go stand in line with the masses.

Hey fellow moron,

I mentioned the FAN in addition to the basic answer because someone will see the facts, try it and then start yet another dozen threads about why can't "they" pre-order 10 iPhone 4s from Apple. I did not make fun of your comment but now that I know you like to call names I will keep an eye out for you posts....

Dave

can you please point me to where people have been talking about apple not allowing upgrades on family plans? If not please jump off my thread.

Dave, I am upgrading not adding, where did you read we were talking about adding a line to a family plan.

Sometimes it's not even worth trying to help people and inform them upfront with a post. All the people who think that what I have said is BS, you are only saying it's BS because it's not what you wanna hear.

No, now you're just being dense. The Apple guy was most likely wrong. Is there a chance he was right? Sure, but Apple chat people are wrong all the time. I ordered my 3GS to upgrade a non-primary line on a family plan last year through Apple.com perfectly fine. They haven't indicated they will change anything. Stop getting so defensive.

I really hope they keep it that way, This is my first time pre-ordering an iPhone.

One thing you have to think about though is, we would not have known anything about AT&T not selling the white iPhone if it was not leaked. Sometimes Apple will choose to not release this info in a letter or on the web site, so people will not all revolt at once. Just a thought.

I honestly hope that he was wrong. I just want to be able to get the white phone right off the bat.

Oh man this would make me angry! I guess I can order one from Apple and Pre-Order at AT&T tomorrow in the morning. Pain in the ass though.

For those who upgraded on a Family Plan last year, are you able to CHANGE the type of family plan (the minutes) when you pre-order? I currently have two lines on the family plan but I need to change the minutes per month.

As we suspected, this information is false. Just ordered all the phones for my family plan.

I called an Apple rep. He advised me that in the training he received that they will not be able to take pre-orders for people with a family plan. He said he believes this to also be the case on apple.com as well.

If this is the case I will really be upset.

The only place you can get a white iPhone 4 at launch will be apple. the closest apple store to me is 4 hours away.

This really suck's if this is true.

I fail to see why having a family plan would eliminate someone from doing a pre order? I've yet to make it that far without the sites crashing on me but I did make it to a screen that asked me if I was upgrading a line or adding a line. If I added a line wouldn't I have to have or be making a family plan? If that's true then the pre-order exclusion is bogus.

I have 5 phones pre-ordered... the information is indeed false!
Very false. Ordered mine as an upgrade and added my wife to get a second Iphone on the same order, no problems. I have yet to change my account to a family plan, however - can't get back into AT&T's site! (Or maybe I can't do that until we actually get and activate the new Iphones?)

Im starting a brand new contract with att and need a family plan. looks like i cant preorder online. although i do have a reservation at the apple store near me. is it guaranteed that i can get an iphone 4 that day?
