Apple Reportedly Aiming to Upgrade the MacBook Pro Twice This Year

Makes sense, like with the first M1 MacBooks. Sell the current chip in the old chassis so you can sell the new chips with the new chassis.

If M3 is enough for you, you’re clearly not the target audience, nor relevant enough as far as Apple is concerned.
Apple doesn’t care about me and my M1 Pro either, but I’m also not bad mouthing newer machines just because mine is enough for me.

I somewhat agree, however I see Apple go the following route:
- MacBook Pro: best of the line like before, with new technologies like OLED, slightly bigger sizes than Air
- MacBook Air: more akin to the current MBP, as the current Airs are more like the pre M1 Pro Pro‘s, even better with their screens, design an battery life. Slightly smaller than Pro
- rumored MacBook: smaller than 13“ the first few years, essentially the M1 MacBook Air, or what the 2015 MacBook pretended to be

So in short, we get a new lower end model replacing the base Air so each other model gets upgraded.
But yeah a touch Mac would be pretty niche, so I’m not certain if they dont have to add a new model just for that.

Probably, but come to think of it, the current generations of all MacBooks didn’t have any noticeable revisions YoY, no keyboard redesign, no display flex cable issues, no popping or short circuiting speakers, no problems with glued in batteries. Nothing, really. No wide spread defects or anything that I can think of.
Quite incredible, after the 2016-2020 debacle.
I got a used M1 Pro last year and it’s incredible even this first gen device essentially behaves and feels like the latest versions.
Apart from Liquid Glass, we live in the best time to be an Apple customer since the 2010-2015 days.

The Osborne Effect refers to a manufacturer, not rumors, telling people about an update long before its release. Due to sales of the V1 plummeting, they weren’t able to adequately finance the V2.

To clarify, the V2 was affected by the Effect’s effect.

Hopefully Apple either delivers the redesign with the M5-Pro/Max, or delivers it with the M6s.

I would be more pissed to wait longer. The M5 Max chip is important for running AI models locally.
 
For those who think Apple will just "equip a MacBook with a touch screen" and be done with it might be in for a surprise.

We already have a hint of what the new MacOS UI will look like.... Have you used the new iPadOS in windowed mode yet? I find it a fluid, easy to use UI that effectively combines touch and trackpad/mouse functionality to make using an iPad now a joy... It's frustrating that the iPadOS is still somewhat crippled by simplistic apps, no true Finder and substandard networking support but the new touchscreen MacBook will solve that.

I expect the new Touchscreen MacBook will also likely have a convertible screen so it could be used in a tablet mode.... ...but of course those are just my observations and expectations.....everyone is entitled to their opinion!

The iPad 3 was, tho. Sales fell off a cliff and took 10 years to recover only after reshaping the entire product line. So much trust and goodwill was lost in October that year when “the new iPad” was released.
 
I would wager that most people who want a touch screen on their MacBook use MacBook Airs and not Pros. That said, if they do this I cannot picture them bringing the feature to the Air before the Pro. I would be fine with all of the rumored changes for the OLED MBP if it is missing a touch screen because I have had touch screen laptops and honestly I try not to touch them as I don’t like having finger grease on my laptop screen. I personally will avoid touching the screen of my own MBP if it has a touch screen.

They did just this with iPad 3 and iPad 4, and then with iPad Pro 1st Gen and iPad Pro 9.7 inches… I remember.

Except that the M5 Pro/Max is expected "real soon now" and the rumors for the M6/OLED model are saying late 2026 or maybe 2027 so we'd still be looking at the best part of a year.

Sure, but you (and others who already have high-end Apple Silicon MBPs) are not the only potential customer. People buy their first Macs, upgrade from Airs and base MBPs to MBP Pro/Max, shift from desktop to laptop, replace lost/stolen/damaged machines, kit out new employees... I'm not looking for a new Mac right now - I spent a packet on my current system and look to get at least 5 years out of it - but if I was I'd be more inclined to buy one with up-to-date-specs.

...and if you read up on it, even that probably wasn't the sole cause of Osborne's failure. A rich, well-established company like Apple isn't going to be brought down by rumors causing a temporary sales slump.

Well, they could just throw it in as a "tick list" feature - it's quite common for PC laptop makers to bundle a touch screen if you go for the higher-end display options - at scale it probably wouldn't add much to the bill-of-materials. Wouldn't be a killer feature or useful as a primary UI, but it would be handy for various niches iOS/iPad developers, DAW/virtual instrument software etc.

But, yeah, a cleverly designed "convertible" would make more sense - it's something that Apple doesn't really offer.

I was going to upgrade to the M5, but then heard the M6 will be launched months to a year after the M5 so I guess I will force myself to endure the M4. Last thing I want is to endure getting the M5 Pro or Max.

My needs are pretty extensive. I like surfing the web and making comments on forums and share with people how fast the Motorola 68030 was on my Atari ST computer and how I was able to run Mac using a device called the "Magic Sack" and that the Atari ST had the blitter chip.

You can’t draw on a MBP screen, it’s vertical, and the hinge is too weak to withstand the pressure. Also, the targets in macOS are designed for a cursor, not a finger or pencil.

Just had an agent in my office needing a new laptop. Uses iPhone and Apple Watch, but was on a touch screen PC. The lack of touch screen made her not go with a Macbook.

Just because you don't have a use for it doesn't mean other people do not. Do you really think Apple would release a touch screen Mac that wasn't optimized for touch?????????

Nevermind it is an "entirely new redesign" - thinking it's probably going to fold over and land in a tablet like form. You know, like most Windows tocu laptops and Chromebooks do for the past decade.

It's almost as if you're unaware that touch screen laptops have been around for 20+ years except in the Apple bubble.

Windows is touch and mouse optimized without developers needing to optimize their apps for touch. If Apple just looks at the disaster that Windows 8 - that made you switch between experiences, and MS's quick change in direction, they're good.

Do you think IOS apps are all manually optimized for touch?? All of that was pushed into the OS level. It's not a magical feat of engineering here. On a laptop, most people are presenting and changing slides, pinch and zoom, scrolling.... it's not like an iPad where you'd be trying to type text using an on screen keyboard.

Some people will have ZERO use for this - others will rejoice that Apple finally unveiled something 20 years later.
Personally, I want to see a detachable screen kind of like the first Windows Surface laptop that did that, but betting the redesign allows the screen to fold over into that form factor like the Lenovo Origami.
