Apple Reportedly Aiming to Upgrade the MacBook Pro Twice This Year

Have M4 max. Want more.

I'm still waiting for things like renders and LLMs, and gaming is still not fast enough which means I need to keep my desktop.

I’m genuinely considering picking up an M5 Ultra instead of the max studio I was originally considering to replace both mac desktop and gaming machine, hoping that it will be fast enough using crossover to handle everything I want it to on the gaming side.

I’ll probably buy it and test in the 14 day return window, return if needed

Yeah i want more from my macbook pro.

The 6900XT is 4 years old now at least. The desktop PC i built is originally from 2020. It is due for retirement (despite spec, the hardware is old and hardware has a life cycle before it becomes more likely to fail). I either build a new desktop or apple offers me something near enough. The m4 max is close but not quite.

Point being: no - m3 generation is NOT enough, in response to the post i replied to originally with the previous post.

More to the point - i want this power in an ipad form factor.

We’re way off that. Apple and the industry has a long way to go yet before reaching anywhere close to “good enough”.

If you think hardware today is “good enough” you’re not thinking too hard.


Don’t get me wrong - i’m not taking anything away from what we have. today’s hardware is AMAZING. my first computer had 16k of ram and ran at <1 mhz (not ghz) and had an 8 bit processor.

All i’m saying is there’s a long way to go just yet.

But do you expect an Apple computer to be your sole gaming hardware in the future? According to a search on Steam, there are 24,819 Mac games out of a total of 145,814 games. Basically, the Mac can only play 17% of the games on Steam. And the Mac isn't guaranteed to run all of the mods for all the games you want to play. Not all of the specialty software made for gaming mice and keyboards are compatible with the Mac.

Basically, running the Mac is a compatibility nightmare if you're into PC gaming. Isn't that a roadblock for you or not?

Crossover/WINE works rather well these days FWIW, though the more modern the game the more grunt it's going to take. But, for ex, I discovered while traveling recently that my macbook air with no fan and the base M4, though upped to 24GB of RAM, can handle Outer Worlds: Spacer's Choice Edition (the 2023 remaster of Outer Worlds) solidly with crossover (I wanted to replay it before starting outer worlds 2 and obviously wasnt traveling with my gaming tower). Fun fact: ram is definitely a major factor here, I tested when I got home, the air with 24gb of ram actually handles OW: SCE better than my M4 Mini with 16GB of RAM but a fan while the air is fanless

It's also handled pretty much anything else from my steam library I've tried (one exception has been the remastered AOE2 from 2013, but the OG works fine in WINE FWIW and the remastered one actually works reasonably decently in a full windows VM)

Yes. Crossover is a thing, and compatibility with WINE is improving. I also have the consoles.

I do not need a Mac to be capable of running every game. I want it to be able to run the games I already play on it, and new things available for the Mac at a decent frame rate.

Gaming is a secondary use case, and if the performance is there, its good enough for me in its current state.

Seriously, I want one and don't want to buy an M4 version this late into the cycle. But I'm also worried about supply and prices with all the RAM pricing issues and whatnot going on so the sooner they can release them the better.

If I was aiming for the Ultra, yeah. But I just want the Max. I'd love to have the Ultra, but just can't justify it. Hell, I can't even really justify the Max, I just want it lol. I'd probably be fine with the Mini, honestly.

Same. I have the 16" with 64gb of ram.

I'm only considering upgrading b/c I travel a lot more now and want the 14". The M1 Pro Max performance has been nothing short of amazing.

Yep, they're fantastic devices. The Pro has so much power that I am tempted to spec out a new air next time around. I have a lovely 36" curved screen so the laptop is mostly used docked. The speed of it still impresses me.
