I have a hunch that maybe devices purchased directly from Apple are already considered "registered" at the time of purchase, especially if you buy them online, since they'd have your Apple ID. Otherwise, it's difficult for them to know when it was actually purchased, especially via a third-party retailer.

You're right however that the terms specifically say "after first setting up your new device," and frankly I'd point Apple support to that, since there's no ambiguity there at all. While Apple's support is better than a lot of companies, it's still not all that hard to find someone who is poorly misinformed when it comes to Apple's policies, especially for stuff like this.
Unfortunately even pointing to the terms didn't end up being helpful as the response was basically that the actual implementation of the offer was supposedly based on the purchase date and the terms might not be correct and that feedback can be submitted to have the terms checked and perhaps updated.

Since they don't offer much content, having an Apple device should be the only pre-requisite to obtaining access to this service. Especially since the shows that I do watch, like the Morning Show, is on hiatus.

I don't understand their rationale for extending the free trial. As a customer, I would love getting something free for a longer period of time. However, from a business point of view, if a year is insufficient to convince someone to subscribe to Apple TV+, I don't see how a couple extra months would make a difference.
That's what thought, but I dont think they mean giving current users more time. I think they mean that they will extend how long you can buy a new Apple Device and get a trial, and it will be less than a year for them.

I'm going to sound like Mr Grumpy, but despite being eligible for the free year when I purchased an iPhone 11 Pro Max last year, I didn't bother with AppleTV+ as I can't get the app for it on my 2017 LG 55" OLED C7 TV.

*Please* don't tell me that I should plug an AppleTV into my set. I like LG's WebOS and it has all the other streaming services that I use. I'm really not going to buy what is now ancient AppleTV hardware just to watch AppleTV+ because Apple (or LG) can't be bothered to release the software for "older" sets that would easily be able to run it.

So pleased I got that off my chest! 😂
I feel the same about HBOMax and our RokuTV. I also like the interface and wish they would put the real HBOMax app on instead of the other crappy one. Might resub if they ever do.

How in the world do you know that? At $4.95 I'm happy to have it.
The pricing is fair, but it's true that there is not a lot of content though.
The timing of COVID-19 really hasn't helped Apple to push more content on this newly born service.
I think we have to let the pandemic end first (which most likely requires a vaccine), and then by 2024, Apple TV+ will be a great rival for Netflix.

No one I know or work with talks about/recommends shows on Apple TV+.....it’s seems to be always Netflix (UK) which ain’t all that. The only thing I watched on Apple so far which was activated with new phone was the Beastie Boys thing. To be honest for something I’m getting for free I’m not really compelled to even bother exploring the service.

Apple needs and "Apple Prime" bundle that includes this, storage, Apple Music, News, Arcade etc. Then wrap it all up in a $129/year price including 2TB of storage and many people will go for it.

Essentially like Amazon Prime's bundle. If they purchased Target then they could include the free shipping like Amazon and then hit Amazon on the e-commerce front.
There's something like that in the works as Apple One: https://www.macrumors.com/2020/08/13/apple-one-bundled-subscription-services/

As an owner of 2 Apple TVs, 1 iMac, 6 iPads, 3 iPhones, and a few iPod Touches, I was never offered any kind of free trial longer than 7 days and certainly nowhere near a full year. The offer never came because I didn't buy these $8000+ worth of devices since November 2019. Apple should (should have) ping my via email since they know we own all this stuff and offered a great trial due to my loyalty.

I would be interested in checking out Apple TV Plus but it would have to be far longer than a 30-day trial. 7 days is useless as a trial.

Also, I'm not a Netflix junkie but Apple's new service for $5/month pales compared to Netflix's $13/month with a gazillion things to watch for our family with 3 kids under 12 years old.

Apple Ping: Howdy boys!

If Apple keep giving it away for free, people then will never want to pay for it because they are used for it being free...just they will never pay for email because email was always free.

I honestly seriously doubt that anyone if has the choice between HBO, Disney+, Netflix, and Apple+...his choice will be Apple TV+.

Of all the Apple devices I’ve purchased. I still have no intent on doing this trial

Mythic quest is terrible. But then again, it was clearly written for a younger audience than myself. Literally nothing in the show was funny (to me or my wife). We suffered through two episodes.

So, if you're in your late teens or early twenties, it might be fantastic.
I’m in my 50s. It is fantastic.

I activated my free trial last year. I looked at it a few times and nothing interested me. It didn’t have much content and I quickly lost interest. I already canceled it even before my year trial was up. I have Netflix, HBOMax, Hulu, and Prime. Those are good enough for me. I only pay for Netflix.

As someone who buys a new iPhone every single year when they come out and pays monthly for 2TB of iCloud storage and an Apple Music family subscription, that $5 should be rolled in there somewhere. If they end the free trial, I’m out and I feel like the majority of people on the trial will be too. There’s just not enough content to justify paying really anything for it. ATV+ should be a perk of paying for other Apple devices and services, not a standalone service.

And yet he keeps doing it without making anything remarkable. I wish to hell they had some "best in class" services.
Their App Stores are the probably the best, if you count that as a service.

Also Apple Pay has worked really well, couldn’t have been a better exp.

Morning Show was good, Banker was alright, i’m really excited for On The Rocks, and i’m dying to see this Foundation series. They need more stuff, they have a lot of family fluff but when they do good it’s pretty good quality content.

Meanwhile Netflix screwed up season 2 of Altered Carbon and then just cancelled it...i’m pissed.
