Most people know that the 5c is not a new phone (apart from little improvements), it is just a repacked iPhone5. I don't think anyone expected it to outsell the 5s or create the same hype. Apple also never called it a budget phone, that was pure speculation by the media. It will be more profitable for Apple as there will be fewer people swapping it every other day because of a little scuff. It is good to see Apple experimenting with different ideas and materials.

2 important points:
- how is that a Phone made in China is 200 US$ more expensive than in the US? 550 US$ in US, 750 en China?
- is the iPhone 5c not selling well? When will we now? Officially

Retailers don't discount on things selling well.

 Especially if you ignore any evidence to the contrary!

Amazon discounts many eBook best sellers below cost.
Walmart offered discounts on the 5S and the 5C before they were even launched.

Retailers offer discounts on things that are selling well in order to get you to buy it from them instead of their competitors.

You should really look at the numbers before you talk nonsense like that.

Common sense: If someone pays $600 for an iPhone, how much is that person going to pay for software, books, music? Hint: Less than $600.

I think what Nightarchaon is referencing is residual profit vs the transactional profit of a single phone. Neither way of making money is wrong and both are necessary for long term viability.

Bolded: How are you coming to that conclusion? Nothing about that statement makes sense, common or otherwise. There is no correlation between the cost of the phone and the amount spent on software, books, and music.

I probably fall under the mentalist category.

I think it's just strange there there a segment of iPhone users that feel the innate need to belittle others based on their hardware choices, and it's just unnecessary.

It's the same thing with the whole Android vs iPhone thing. It's just like...what's wrong with you people? Just let someone enjoy what they enjoy and leave them alone.

yeah people need to stop with the denial - In todays Newegg deal email they have the 5c Unlocked with 80 dollars off.

nobody wants an overpriced plastic iPhone.

All this opinions and comotion over a piece of rumor..... And that is sll ot is rumor... And they are dime a dozen when it comes to apple!

Indeed. The past failure of Apple includes:

iPhone 4

(To be fair it's just the CDMA version)

iPhone 4S

iPhone 5

I am still shocked how Apple stays in business considering we also have many Macrumors posters who'd always tell us only existing Apple users keep buying iPhones and most new customers buy Androids.

On the other hand, I don't think the iPhone 5c is the kind of device that'll be a smashing success in the early phase. The success and failure of that model will be told in the next two years as it serves the late adopters and price conscious types who bought $0 iPhone 4 and now the iPhone 4S.

As is typical with MacRumors, nobody's even commenting on your post which is by far the best in the entire 5+ page thread so far.

In before all of the "Steve would never have allowed..." posts.

Sure, I thought the 5C was going to be used to drive up market share in unsubsidized markets. I'm not convinced it will, and I'm still convinced Apple should be somewhat more concerned with worldwide market share than it seems to be at this point, but only a little bit.

Its plastic. Never mind there's a thread in the iPhone forum full of 5C owners who love the device and don't consider it "cheap". It's plastic so that automatically makes it "cheap". The only time Apple plastic products aren't cheap is when Steve Jobs is on stage announcing them.

Apple fanboys have only themselves to blame for this embarrassing misconception by previously trying to ridicule phones made by other companies and calling it "cheap trash" just because it was made with plastic.

But it's the same story as usual, if a phone manufacturer does something that Apple doesn't it's useless crap, but then when Apple does it it's suddenly awesome, and everyone else is just copying Apple somehow.
Can't wait to see how this forum switches from "Curved displays are completely pointless" to "Curved displays are the new revolution!" once Apple releases a device with a curved display.

The success and failure of that model will be told in the next two years as it serves the late adopters and price conscious types who bought $0 iPhone 4 and now the iPhone 4S.

That's the problem though, the 5C does not serve the price conscious consumers, at all.

I o

So cutting back to 150,000 per day is only 4.5 million per month. At $550 each that means revenue per quarter on this one item is only about $7.4 billion.

Yeah, that sucks.

I love your comment. I laughing my balls off.
Also it is so real what you are saying, you can delete all other posts on this thread. It says it all.

Except the 3G and 3GS, those were amazing and revolutionary and totally not plastic at all.

Yep.

Like the average customers cars about Apple's profits. The talking point about profit is so over used its not funny. Basically irrelevant .

I think everyone is confused here. A product can be cheap regardless of material. Yes a lot of forum readers say cheap plastic, but I think it's referring to build quality and feel of device, not that it is made of plastic and therefore is cheap. I've personally held a 5c and think it feels very high quality and not cheap. I've also held phones which are plastic and look nice, but feel cheap in the hand.

Can't say I'm surprised..:

I'm not either. Because this is likely a planned drop that was going to happen all along.

Launch demand for any iPhone or iPad is always the highest for the year. Now they don't need as many phones being made especially on the phone they know would be slightly less popular. So the plan was likely always to cut production after the first couple of weeks and convert some lines over to the 5S or even iPads.

It likely has very little to do with the grey market, lack of demand in a tragic sense etc

To be fair, not all plastic phones are the same. I think the Galaxy S line feels cheap, but not the Lumia or the 5C or the HTC One X. Also I'm sure many "fanboys" who rip competitors plastic phones are the same ones ripping the 5C.

You might need to ask their govt. that. Why do governments levy such high import tariffs? That might be a better question.

is the iPhone 5c not selling well? When will we now? Officially

We will only know if Apple ever releases sales figures for the 5C. Even in their quarterly reporting, they may not break out iPhone sales by model. However, my guess is if it sells well--and especially if it exceeds sales expectations--they will trumpet those sales numbers.

Is "gray market" just really a euphemistic term for "black market"??

AKA Apple "UN"authorized Retailers!

No. A "black market" involves the sales of things which are illegal, or heavily regulated without following the related laws and/or regulations.

A "grey market" on the other hand, involves the sales of legal goods through unofficial or 'non-traditional' channels.

Yep.

They were announced by Steve Jobs so of course they were all that. Same with the original iMac and iBook.

I doubt Apple will ever provide 5C sales figures. Analysts will use gross margins, ASPs and commentary from Cook/Oppenheimer to gauge how well/not well the 5C is selling.

I love the fact that people forgot that Apple made iPhone with plastic backs for 2 years (3G and 3GS) and no one complained it was "cheap" but praised the 3G for being half the price of the original iPhone (compared the 2 year contract/lower price right before the 3G came out, so less than half of the original price in June 2007)

Why are you guys so afraid of color? :p

No, the colors they offer just aren't *quite* what I'm looking for. Go just a bit more 'jewel tone', and I'd be all over some of the color options. As is, they colors just aren't appealing to me.

On the other hand, I like the 'space grey' 5s much more than I liked the 'black' option on the 5.

So refreshing to read these type of comments among the vast sea of negative people. Keep it up, if it wasn't for a comments like this once in a while I'd have to stop reading the comment sections: so many haters and whiners.

Nope. I am generalising but if I polled 1000 guys I expect the vast majority would choose a dark shade or bold colour over a pastel one, simple as that. Check out sales figures and demographics for most big purchases with colour options and you'll see what I mean. I have to deal with this stuff all day long as a product designer making things sold around the world.

Fair do's. I see your point. It's kinda sad though really that the world is like this.

This is what happens when you take an old phone, slap a cheap new cover on it and try to sell it as a new device.
