Apple also didn't invent the dock on Mac OS X, but guess what? The Apple community and the company itself act like they did.

The opinions of the Apple community at large are irrelevant. Especially in a court of law. Of course the dock has never (to my knowledge) has been brought up in a patent lawsuit from Apple. So your point is?

While I generally don't like lawsuits like this (it stifles innovation and competition), I do get where they are coming from. Plus, it's hard to ignore the precedent given apples innovations in Mac OS, only to have them stolen by MS with windows. That lawsuit didn't go so well, but it was filed many years after the fact.

Anyway, it seems like everybody is suing everybody. This makes some strange bedfellows between Google and Apple. HTC is a proxy war.

The actual innovation was by Xerox that is where Apple got the concept for the original graphical OS...

I suspect that there will be quite a bit of prior art in this instance and it will eventually come down to Apple's war chest vs Google's...

What do they want? The power of a Mac Pro in a laptop?

What is it with this complaint? I'm so sick of seeing someone make this complaint in every, single Apple-related article, no matter that the article has absolutely nothing about laptops even mentioned!

Get a life! Buy a Windows box if you can't stand to wait!

Probably, because the i7 was in a Dell Laptop already last November - it was in their xps studio series.

And look at Sony's new Vaio that has been touted by several posters on the forums here.

It just seems like Apple is behind on their update.

Plus, I would like them to put the pro options back in for the MacBook Pro.

Yes, I agree it is frustrating waiting and have myself debated on getting a Win Box - Win 7 looks pretty awesome, but I guess I am just use to the Mac OS, but if Apple forgets about us too long, I just might...

If iPhone devices proliferate using Nokia's patented [GSM] technology, that's a problem.

Nothing is invented in a vacuum. I know you think that the universe started with Apple

It actually started with Apple's Macintosh GUI. A far better (usable) variation of the one which Xerox never bothered to bring to market.

It's not really Apple that bothers me in this case as much as the Apple fanboys praise them for defending their IP, but then rip other companies who sue Apple in defense of their IP. A modicum of logical consistency is all I'd like to see.

I for one do not judge any company innocent or guilty until a judge has ruled on the case. Do not paint everybody under the same brush as the ignorant. Generally speaking, we are biased (this is an Apple forum after all), but in this HTC case, all we have to go on is the complaints Apple has made. HTC has yet to defend themselves other than “we didn’t do it”.

All the scientists are wrong.

The universe in fact started less than 30 years ago :D

They really got it wrong with carbon dating!:p

I'll see how this 'll play out. But it's personally turning me away from Apple, no matter how legally entitled they are to sue the pants off of the competition.

I wish Apple would spend all this negative energy on good things like new Pro models and their software lineup.

My sentiments exactly. The iPad's pathetic excuse for tablet computing is indicative of a loss of focus. Did this company forget about their computers? Has MobileMe become a sad footnote? Remember the MacbookPro? REMEMBER?!?

Enough toys, INNOVATE SOMETHING USEFUL.

Irrelevant. Apple licensed relevant technologies from Xerox legally and Apple has never said they invented the GUI. They have several patents on their implementations of their GUI, but that is to be accepted.

Google is not named in this suit. Right now Google is not a party.

Nothing is invented in a vacuum. I know you think that the universe started with Apple and if SJ came out on stage tomorrow and said Apple is introducing this great new patented idea called the Internet you would think he really did invented it.

I know I would like to see Nokia take Apple to the cleaners if they're infringing on the GSM patents. I'd really love to see the responses on here.

The issue with Nokia is over licensing costs.

Specifically licensing costs over patents in a pool. At least that’s what this is appearing to be. Apple contends that they are being asked to pay more than the standard going rate that Nokia is supposed to charge.

We shall see.

So ignore the halfwits that don't understand anything about IP patents, ESPECIALLY when related to software.
You're an expert in software and patent law?

For the most part patent law has gotten out of hand. Apple shouldn't have any hold on a multi-touch patent or css animations, since they came up with neither. But that's just my ignorant opinion.

You serious?

Bye, Bye iPhone

Sorry Apple. I was upset to see this report. It makes me feel not to support the iPhone anymore.

Even thou, it's my choice and you will still be makeing lots of money. I have to move on.

Thank you,
Jamie

Ars has a good article on the situation.

Best part is the final paragraph:
Microsoft isn't letting an opportunity slide past it, either. While some handset makers may be shying away from Android, the company is reportedly letting OEMs know that it has its own IP portfolio protecting Windows Phone 7 Series, and is willing to "join battle with customers that come under IP attack."

Wonder if Google will step it up to help HTC. I wonder though, Google is still a fairly young company so they may not have the war chest needed to push Apple around. MS certainly can though.

All that assumes that MS can deliver. They had the smartphone market for years with an anything-goes approach to app development and they got beat. They still have to make a product that people want to buy. WMoble is really tarnished after all.

Why would anyone care about what Schwartz has to say? Sun did all the wrong things under him, failed, and now he's running his mouth online. Looking Glass failed because it was crap.

*coughs AppleTV *coughs MacBook Air* coughs Magic Mouse*

Oh, but I guess you'll believe quite literally (I kid you not) anything your messiah tells you.

Yep, even that dreaded hockey puck mouse is a hit in your eyes. That's why you're a fanboy extremist with absolutely no clarity. You're sucked deep in the vacuum.

google already said they would.

m$ are bullies!!! they will throw red rings at us!!!

jk i love my 360:D

I don't think anyone would want to see windows burn lol. The thing is competition is great and very welcome. But like you said, these other companies have no creativity and its because they just care about staying in the game to keep making money off of us with nothing to show for it. They loved staying in the squeaky rusty little rut that they had us in, hoping to continue to fool customers year after year by adding a new colored volume key here or a clearer speakerphone feature there or adding new corny little screen designs for your own supposed beautiful custom background, meanwhile 1,000,000 other people have that same phone and there are only like 7 backgrounds to choose from LOL, or switching the buttons around and bringing the same phones out in new colors that they could have put out in the first place and charge extra each time one of these things comes out. The designs were all ugly for the most part with the exception of a few, like the Blackberry. They ALL had buttons and the UI's were ridiculous as far as placement of whatever the phone had to offer and navigation. The OS's . . . oh hold on, there were none lol.

I couldn't have said it better myself my friend. Welcome to the Apple wagon, this is Steve.

It sounds more like you are the one that is naive. You say Apple is a timid animal in the corner with a bad attitude toward business relations? Are you joking or serious? I hope your joking, because that doesn't even make one drop of sense. Apple is more like the oversized lion on the mountain looking down from slumber while licking it's paws after devouring the competition fair and square AND not even on purpose, they just got in the way. Lol and the only attitude I see is when companies that usually work with them become lazy or purposely try to hinder the sales of soon to be released devices made by Apple by not supplying the product they normally supply out of spite. The only ones I see not playing friendly here are Adobe with their flash and CS compatibility and Microsoft withholding office. If even either of those two things were on the ipad, the things would fly and these companies know that.

The iPad is innovative? Are you a comedian? If so, quit your job. Apple is like a pomeranian - thinks its larger than it is. Don't get me wrong, I use Apple products by but they are showing their faults left and right lately.

Btw, in a twist of sweet tasting irony - Microsoft is the one making innovative waves lately - Windows 7 series, Courier, and etc.

I use Apple products, but at least I'm not blinded to notice a company make a complete asshat of themselves.

Because most large technology companies use patents as a defensive mechanism. Basically if you attack me then I have something that I can threaten you with. The only time companies pull them out in the offensive is when they feel they are already losing. If you're already winning there is no reason to spend the money on a legal battle, opening the can of worms that the company you threaten may have their own trump patents, and/or risking going to court and having your patent overturned (then it's completely useless for defense later).

Thank you Stella, my case and point:

Apple did its homework and went after HTC because they have very few patents to fight back with. I don't expect we'll see Apple go after MS, Motorola, or Google for that matter because all those companies have their own war chest of patents that they can pull out and go tell Steve to f' off like Sun did in 2003.
