When buying something from Apple.com, my usual delivery option is to pick it up from the local Apple store. Walk in with the pick-up email and then walk out a few minutes later. Beats having to worry about Porch Pirates.

Your choice of "Asus ZenBook S 16 with a 16" 3K 120Hz OLED and 24GB RAM/1TB SSD and as thin and light" is interesting. If you gave me your Windows Zenbook I would use it as a coaster for my coffee cup. OTOH I might choose a thin and light CheapBook to carry everywhere, just to deal with PDFs and email in the field.

I use the iPhone hotspot fairly regularly, but briefly. Using it constantly pushes the iPhone usage to where data costs get confusing and/or throttling.
Yup. And I force the salesperson to let me open the box and get the new device working. That way the Apple rep can help deal with any new-device hardware or software issues.

Nope, I have unlimited business data Sims for my phone and my iPad and I’d love to add one for a laptop.

If it’s a laptop that’s „just a laptop” and not meant to be a laptop + core of a desktop, then the reality will be that the usb-c will be used very rarely. Data will be transferred in and out wirelessly. Outside of specific usecases (e.g. photographers and video makers), the overwhelmingly most common use of the usb-c port on an iPhone is charging.
I really don’t think the lack of thunderbolt is going to be an issue for the consumers this laptop will be targeted at. Because why would it be? If you’re buying a MacBook and want fast external storage, multiple monitors or a mass of peripherals, you’re not going to be buying this entry-level MacBook in the first place.

“Massive wave of demand” is just marketingspeak for a bump in total orders for this quarter. Which is inevitable when Apple releases products / updates to products. Reviewers buy (which, even if they return within the two week window, is still added to the total demand number) influencers buy (ditto), people with too much money in their pockets buy, and that’s on top of the people who buy anyway because they have to replace dying tech. So of course there is a bump in demand.
Every year there is “a massive wave of demand” for all consumer products during the pre-Christmas buying season. Of course there is.

I don’t think Apple have figured out how to convert Windows users… not really.
I have a M2 MacBook Air. It sits unused; purely because I just prefer windows. Even the simple things like the file management.
So if this is to target windows/chromebook users, it needs to be more substance than cheap hardware.

I hope Macs' market share expand and MacOS gets the love it needs. The current direction of porting features from iOS to MacOS without much ****s given is really concerning. Many pros are still onboard just because there's still no better alternative.
Nah. "Windows dominance" is due to large corps now having decades of Win OS and Win apps running on hundreds of thousands of generic computers. There can be no "end windows dominance in 1 year flat."

There is a lot more to "Windows dominance" than price. In fact, I would dare say that price plays little to no part.
If it’s got such low specs low ram (not even enough for Apple Intelligence) what the hell is this good for? Honestly? It’s not made for gamers, or creators. I guess it’s being made for college students which is fine for classwork, but it seems to be a very underpowered “laptop” with pretty colors. More just media consumption device and less abilities than an iPad!?
Hopefully Apple is smart enough not "to target windows/chromebook users." And instead target people and usages. A subtle but important difference.

Well, my round trip to the nearest Apple Store would be about 2 hours, so I rather deal with "porch pirates" via sign for delivery and/or paying attention, but I know that our home environments are all different
• A CheapBook will be a great entry level laptop for young kids.
• A CheapBook will be a great inexpensive laptop for granny.
• A CheapBook will be a great carry-around throwaway laptop for folks [me] that do their heavy computing on pricier Macs. I just hope they offer at least one gray/silver choice for us older users who still want to be perceived as serious...
College students deserve MBA or better IMO. But I guess it depends on the individual student.

Easy: not "new product" but new products. Plus the new CheapBook will draw people like me into an Apple Store just out of curiosity. Apple is the world's fourth largest seller of personal computers, and a third category of Mac laptop is of interest.

1) Yields probably mean the A18 costs Apple less.
2) The new CheapBook is being positioned as Apple's low end laptop, and Apple will not want its new low end to unnecessarily cannibalize the now midrange MBAs that used to be the low end. Some cannibalization will of course occur, and that is fine.
3) A18 probably does everything that Apple needs its lowest end laptop to do.

Waiting for the updated Apple TV as I'm about to cut Xfinity TV and just go with internet streaming. Need to put one on four TVs and figure I may as well have the latest. Hoping they at least announce these even if they delay sales until OS 26.4 is released.
Maybe they expected an excess of these from the chip maker based on trends on iPhone sales.

The A18 is the chip Apple used in the iPhone 16, and it was deemed sufficient for Apple Intelligence. It hasn't lost any of its capacity simply because Apple's software engineers weren't up to the task, so it should be fine for an ultra-low-end Mac.
