Apple Reportedly Expects 'Major Rush' of Customers This Week

They could’ve done better by bringing it down to $499.99.

No price has been announced yet, just rumors. And no matter the MRSP, there will be a lot of complaining that it doesn't offer value. And yet, many will be sold. As long as it is lighter than the MacBook Air, I'll be buying. My 10 year old 12" MacBook is getting long in the tooth. Raw performance is fine, lack of current MacOS is not. The new MacBook is going to be a screaming bargain compared to the $1,600 in 2016 dollars I paid for the 12" MacBook.

Even that MacBook has been quite the bargain at less than $2 a day. You won't find a Windows laptop that makes it 10 years.

I don’t think Apple have figured out how to convert Windows users… not really.

I have a M2 MacBook Air. It sits unused; purely because I just prefer windows. Even the simple things like the file management.

So if this is to target windows/chromebook users, it needs to be more substance than cheap hardware.

I'm not so sure this new macbook is really about converting Windows users. I think it's about bringing in users that have been wanting to try a MacBook (especially those that have liked using iPhones) but felt they were outside their budget. In addition to drawing in these more budget minded users they may also later get some of these new customers to later upgrade to pricier models once they are sold on Macs.

The issue with MacBooks is that they run macOS.

I would love if all computers had the same issue.

They could sell this MacBook for $299...there will be no rush. A low end bottom Apple laptop is just not appealing to Apple enthusiasts in my opinion. Maybe interesting but not appealing to make a purchase right away. And the market that it does appeal to is not rushing to buy a laptop in this economy.

Keep in mind, before the iPhone was launched, Apple sold all kinds of things for all kinds of people. The cheap iMac running Nanosaur in CompUSA was never bought by a "premium" buyer lol.

Honestly I'd really love to see more cheap Macs and less $700 wheels and $1000 monitor stands.

Hey! I use those words. Not always, though, just when I’m sitting in front of my premium computer and thinking, “what a lovely ecosystem.”

But you’re right, it wouldn’t appeal to me. That doesn’t mean I don’t think it’s a good product for Apple to make, however, for reasons I and others have stated previously.

It might be but I just don’t see it. Now if it had something novel like being a laptop and then flipping it around to be an iPad that might be cool.

The cheap iMac you speak of sold for $1,299 back in 1998 according to google. That’s like $2,500 today. 😵

I'll never forget my 2001 iBook G3 running OS X back in 2001. Just one design flaw... the screen hinge cut into the wires and caused the screen to fail after some time, but that got fixed under warranty. Was sad when they discontinued the iBook name and replaced it with "MacBook"... thought that was too boring at the time, but the excitement was reignited when they introduced the brilliant and market-defining MacBook Air.

There are a lot of people who hate windows 11 that have iphones who have considered a macbook too expensive in the past.

MacOS is performant on reasonably low spec hardware (M1 series class) and this machine will outperform the original Macbook Air M1 by a significant margin.

Apple has advised its retail store employees to expect a "major rush" of customers this week, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman.

Apple teased "a big week ahead," with announcements starting Monday.

In his Power On newsletter today, Gurman said some employees believe Apple's preparations for new products this week are "on par with what happens before the debut of new iPhones in the fall," suggesting that at least one of the devices set to be unveiled between Monday and Wednesday will have "major mainstream appeal."

The new product likely to receive the most interest is the rumored lower-cost MacBook, which is described as an "incredible value" within Apple, according to the newsletter. Apple believes that a more affordable MacBook will help to "drive a serious number of switchers from Windows machines and Chromebooks," wrote Gurman.

While there have been no concrete rumors about the lower-cost MacBook's starting price, estimates range from $599 to $799 in the United States. In any case, qualifying college students and educators should receive $100 off the regular price.

The lower-cost MacBook is expected to be powered by the iPhone 16 Pro's A18 Pro chip, rather than an M-series chip, and it will reportedly have a smaller 12.9-inch display. Based on A18 Pro specs, this MacBook will likely have 8GB of RAM, and the laptop will likely have regular USB-C ports instead of faster Thunderbolt ports.

Like the iBook from the early 2000s, it has been rumored that this MacBook will come in fun color options, like yellow, green, blue, and/or pink.

Beyond the lower-cost MacBook, most if not all of the other new products coming this week are expected to feature upgraded chips and little else. Possibilities include an iPhone 17e with an A19 chip, an iPad Air with an M4 chip, an iPad 12 with an A18 chip, a MacBook Air with the M5 chip, and MacBook Pro models with M5 Pro and M5 Max chips.

the wave of customers are to see how usable the low cost Mac is, aka window shopping . the purchases are going to be done at Amazon or Costco where they have sales/discounts. apple only has sales during black Friday. people aren't going to wait 10 months.
