Good points are being made so far. I do wonder what is driving this. Is Tim working under a clear long term vision? Or is this a frantic bid to show stockholders that Apple won't stagnate under his reign? I don't really know enough about him to figure this one out. With Steve, you had a better idea of what he stood for.

I agree that Apple needs to fix a few things.

But there are writers and directors who will be making content that will end up somewhere... be it Amazon, Netflix, Hulu, etc.

So why not on Apple's platform?

It's not like Apple executives will be literally producing these shows... i.e holding cameras and positioning lights :)

Apple will write a check and a production company will make them. They will simply premiere on Apple first.
I still don't like it and people hate exclusives. Plus I don't think Apple needs to be wasting a lot of time supporting other platforms which they surely would have to if they get into the exclusive content business. If Apple is trying to figure out what to do with all their cash how about making entry level storage on iOS devices 32GB and how about making iCloud more competitive with Google, Microsoft and Dropbox.

I'm not sure.. IF they could produce a top notch high quality bit of programming like House of Cards, why not? But finding out that they were chasing after the likes of those BBC top gear dudes was a WTF moment. What was that?

The entire Beats purchase has been a boondoggle and a fiasco.

There's a lot of resources available for Apple with Disney/Pixar and the Steve Jobs connection there, so it's not like it's an insane idea, but they better get some people that know something about quality creative programming.

That's the news :D 9 out of 10 shows will be about hip-hoppers :D And the last one about a hard life of an unnamed designer meticulously designing gold watches for an unnamed company.

OMG, that would be awful. What would they produce, family friendly comedy? We don't need another disney channel...

I can see everyone telling Tim how great a dancer he is and him making a dance video!

Take over what? Apple's business model is selling hardware. Sell me a killer TV and make sure Netflix, Hulu and Amazon are available on it.

Ok, so just like they should have made an iPhone without Mobile Me or iCloud, right? Why should Apple do all these services?

Just give us Google apps and it'll be great!

Until Google starts withholding turn-by-turn directions. Or until they disable push gmail. And so on and so forth.

Every time Apple puts themselves in the position of depending solely on other companies for something they end up regretting it. Not surprising that they've finally gotten the message to not do it in the first place.

Too bad Netflix & Apple both whiffed on the Top Gear trio. ...they wound up on freaking Amazon prime.

To the torrents...

Right? It's amazing that out of BBC, Apple, Amazon, ITV, Hulu and Netflix that Amazon were the only ones interested in a super easy to manage, always successful cash cow that they can milk at will and literally as long as cars have wheels and the three men are alive. They all had the money and it is a guaranteed hit for any of them, virtually no matter what they paid. People say what they want but that is kind of like everyone having the chance to take over something as easily cashed in on as say, Game of Thrones and passing. I get why BBC took the stand they did, it's financially idiotic, but I get it. They drew a moronic line and couldn't really back off. Netflix and Apple passing was staggering. I was sure they'd end up at Netflix really.

Not a fan of this at all. Apple doesn't need original content and Eddy Cue should be focused on making iCloud, Apple Music and Siri best in class. They're not right now. If he really wants to do this then Apple should spin off Beats into its own company and Cue can go run it. Then Cook can poach someone from Google, Microsoft or Amazon that really understands internet services.

Good point, apple should just create

Speaking seriously that's a weird move. Apple should focus on its primary business, making innovative hardware, Macs, iPhones. They're trying to do too much already and not necessarily in the proper areas.

Comedy about samsung maybe?

It could even have various genres

Season 2013 -- Law&Order-style
Season 2014 -- Comedy as all it take to took the "funny guy" down was to make a phone with a bigger LCD
Season 2015 -- Drama as samsung digs itself deeper in the ground

Or a not-so-based-on-reality Breaking Bad

Set in 1985, a young millionaire Steve Jobs, after being kicked out of the company he founded, instead of funding NeXT and buying Pixar, decides to make meth.

I find this about as likely as Apple purchasing a controlling interest in Netflix. In cash.

It's a good idea and a real way to get people to join their subscription service.

I'm surprised they passed up on the Premier League rights here in the UK earlier this year. The rights for it in the US will be out for the bidding soon, so I'd expect them to be involved in that, especially if they are do suing on the US first.

Why would Netflix or Hulu or any other content company not want their content on the most popular platform? But once Apple starts getting into competition with them who knows what they'll do.

They'll either sell out or go out of business.

Dear Apple,

Please keep making the great hardware you have been. Please improve your software that is buggy as hell lately.

Please stop trying to do more and more half assed stuff like apple music, and TV content.

K thx bye.
The thing is, great hardware is totally worthless if it doesn't have a wide array of content.

But to the point of this article…. I agree, Apple does not need to be in the business of producing content. It just needs to be smart in outsourcing and licensing the content from other content providers (e.g. ESPN etc)

I'm not sure what happened to a thousand noes for every yes but Cook needs to start saying no. Maybe this turns into nothing or is nothing more than Apple paying for exclusives (though I hate exclusives). But if Cue wants Apple to get in the content production business then I seriously think the board should consider spinning off Beats and Cue can go run it as a separate company.
This is the reason I lost faith in Amazon as an investment-- they're so busy making sure they're doing everything the cool kids are doing that they've lost track of who they are. I believe in Amazon as a retail and cloud services company, but I have no confidence in them as a device and content company. If Bezos wants to make phones, start another company.

Same logic here. Apple is great at devices and I think they can learn to build a delivery system to feed those devices, but I don't want them competing with their content providers. I also don't want device sales threatened because some faction out there finds their programming offensive and I don't want the programming to be bland because they're afraid to offend someone.
