I totally agree! So far, I'm happy with the TbyT on my iPhone 5. I think the Flyover feature is fun to show friends, but its not a feature that I use for anything beyond entertainment (for now).

I've been using the Navigon app on my iPhone for the last three years. Since updating my 4S to IOS 6 I've been using the built in TBT and find it as good as Navigon and much more convenient to use.

It will never catch up - it's not like Google will suspend working on their mapping service while Apple get their **** together. And it's not like 80 million people, not on an iPhone, will stop submitting their data to Google Maps...
The gap will lessen over time. Your first million users provide you with a lot more unique feedback than the next million, due to duplication.

The backlash Apple is getting for unable people that can't get over themselves and use perfectly usable maps.google.com is unheard of.

I use maps.google.com and it's saved/bookmarked, but it doesn't change the fact that it's not like a native application. Additionally every time I use it, I must ok access to location services. Like any workaround it's more unnecessary steps. Apple should take a page from Apple and just make it work. Apple has the uncanny ability to make products that even a five year old can figure things out, and frankly going the extra mile to use a browser instead of using a working maps application is the most Windows Vista thing Apple has done this decade.

They hate Google. Is it hard to understand?

Why though? They offer the best service for maps. Work with them.

This is like Sony saying to Microsoft that they don't want windows on their laptops because they have a competing video games console.

That's good, because you don't have any choice.

Yes, he/she does.... and anyone who is not using iPhone 5 or the new iPod touch does. Simply stay on iOS 5. Pretty big deal about the maps. And am sure lots of them who have barely used it anyway, are complaining about it

Personaly am loving it and i won't move back to google's if i had the option :D

This is a war between Apple and Google, but the sad thing is that valued customers are caught in the middle. Apple should have done better and this reminds me of the launch of Final Cut Pro X, which Apple gave an inferior product.

"Apple's decision apparently caught Google off-guard, as Google is reportedly still several months away from having a standalone maps app ready for submission to the App Store."

I doubt that is true, because even the rumor mill knew about the coming change. Google doesn't owe Apple a map app or contract if Apple doesn't want it. Neither does Samsung owe Apple iPhone parts if Apple doesn't want them, but Apple does owe its customers who upgraded better maps.

The real war is on the Pro side of Apple.Apple choose to hug tight the consumer base but the reality is that this isn't loyal at all,its not reliable,if Android or Win8Mobile puts out better Appz (in terms of functionality and look) you'll see a lot of Iphone users jumping off ths ship and if Apple axe the desktops and then even unify Osx with Ios they would have a perfect recipe for a disaster while not axing the desktops (500 days and October is incoming without Imac-Mini..)could give a real loyal base to shield Apple from this threat,if only Cook and Board want, but they are blind sitted on a mountain of money.

This time i won't update my devices, because there's no real need and because there is no real change with the Gui.All appz have Ios6 support (except Garage Band as far i can see) makin it possible to stay with 5.
Forstall must resign.

But to hurt the customer in the name of competition? What if Apple decided to get rid of everything Google related including gmail accounts? Your hurting the customer and making yourself look like a spoiled brat.

I just have to have a giggle on this post. While I agree and empathize with your feelings of being hurt as a customer, you do realize this is not a necessary purchase nor a forced purchase. Owing ios6 or an iPhone 5 isn't a matter of life or death. Competition exists to give you the best option within the confines of the legal system. I do hope you realize that and don't patronize any establishment you feel abuses you or doesn't deserve your money. Android would be the best option for you if you rely on google maps for your day to day activities.

In light of this information and the other facts we know, and if its true, I'm of the opinion that Apple should have waited to deploy their maps until next year when the contract ended. Another full year of development would have been wise.

Ok. I hear you.
But what about, perhaps millions of users who would still continiue to use the older iOS version and take their time to upgrade? Same as they are doing now with iOS 5 to have google maps on. So you just take the google maps off the system and force them to upgrade?

Simple fact is that IOS users are "outgunned" at least 10:1, there's no indication that IOS users supply more information than non-IOS users. In countries where iPhones are too expensive in general this problem will be even worse.

This won't change as long as maps stays an IOS only option and doesn't creep into OSX and a general web-service for everybody - the last thing goes so much against what Apple usually does that it might end up being their downfall. Seeing something like this[1] just shows that Apple really need to get their act together or else they are going to get their asses handed to them.

Cutting out Gmail will be the final suicide,i use it ti work and i cannot and don't wanna be forced because of the war Apple is committed with.
I'll buy an Ipod Touch to have the appz that aren't on Android (Guitar took Kit..mm the musical ones ) then i'll pair with a Galaxy S3 (4...5?)

ps.
it seems i have actually quoted the wrong one ,sorry.

Apple should make this an app first for beta testers, then completely roll it out in iOS 7. Replacing it from the ground-up with so many errors really sucks.
Also, there is a need for built-in transit directions like Google Maps in iOS 5.

My main beef with Apple's new maps, which is rarely talked about, is their sub-par traffic notification system. There is no way to know if the traffic info has been updated, if there is no traffic in the area. You have to zoom out and find an area with traffic, in order to tell if the maps app has pulled the data. A popup (or something) should display when the app has refreshed the traffic data, this way you know you're up-to-date.

This isn't to say Google's system is much better, in fact, in some ways it's worse. Google is keen on displaying traffic EVERYWHERE on their map. Google should offer the option to enable / disable traffic data on side streets. It's frustrating to have to turn off traffic info when browsing side streets, because there's so much clutter.

Overall, Apple's system is more elegant and with a few tweaks, it could be great.

As a frequent Apple critic on this board, I felt like adding my two cents:

You can still use the web Google Maps, I know, not ideal...Google wasn't prepared and didn't submit an app (their fault, not Apple's).

The program has issues, but I am optimistic it'll get better. It is more functional, just with bad data at the moment. All and all, looks like bad PR on Apple's part, bad moves on Google's part, and I'm having fun with the internet memes.

I mean, you have to admit, some of the stuff IS funny.

Ah the team reason bevind the crappy ( for most) maps app revealed : Google wasnt ready . So Apple forced the half finished app on users so they had little choice in using IT . Rood for Apple bad for the consumer who actually user Google maps . But of course we al know Apple doesnt care about its users besides How much money IT can make off Them

Wouldn't you be better off if you knew the alternative route was also clogged? Turning traffic data on side-streets off will degrade your ability to choose the best alternative route. And about the updates - I thought that these were real-time (the ones in Google are - and Wuze that Apple build upon are also).

Funny, Apple Maps could have probably used another year (at least) in development.

Apple, I love ya, but you deserve this crapstorm of negative press. All those billions and they put out something that looks like mapquest circa 1999.

On the bright side, I'm loving the hundreds of Apple Maps memes that have popped up since last week.

Another POV

I believe we might be missing a point.. Of course they have a contract running, because they cant force everyone to upgrade to iOS6 on Day 1. There are still perfectly happy 3G/3GS/4 users who will stick with iOS4 and iOS5 simply because they are satisfied with what they are using and/or they don't know what they are using or how to upgrade. By giving them more than a year to upgrade with their running contract with Google, Apple has delivered the necessary support to their old devices.

Just my two 0.01$..

So,correct me if i'm wrong,at the end of this last year my Ios5 Google Maps will stop to work?

Maps will be improved much faster with customer feedback than they could have been in private.

Being a software developer doesn't have anything to do with it. The software is done. It's the data that's lacking.

If it's the data that's lacking, how come there have been side by side comparisons where the native Tomtom app is showing superior data to that of Apple maps?

And how come Cook is holding the maps devs in "lockdown"? I mean they're just software developers, right?

So,correct me if i'm wrong,at the end of this last year my Ios5 Google Maps will stop to work?

Every time you open the Maps app on a iOS5 device, it loads up from fresh start, right? Then, yea, it should stop working since there won't be any servers on the other end supporting the app. While I might be wrong, that's the simple logic talking..

Speaking of which, why in hell does Google Maps load from fresh every single freekin time? I'm almost always checking the map data of the same 60-70km area, can't it just cache or download the data and only check if there's an update? :( :(

Happy to hear that it works for you. Apple Maps are totally unusable for millions of other iPhone owners.

Nonsense

The problems are with a minority of the users, and are being quickly resolved
