Apple is in talks to invest in artificial intelligence company OpenAI, according to sources cited by The Wall Street Journal.

The report did not indicate how much money Apple would be investing in OpenAI, or provide any additional details about the discussions, but it said this latest fundraising round would value the ChatGPT maker above $100 billion.

Apple previously announced that ChatGPT integration is coming to Siri on iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia before the end of the year.

With user permission, Siri will be able to show ChatGPT answers directly in response to questions and other prompts. ChatGPT will also be an option for Apple's system-wide Writing Tools feature, allowing users to generate text and images. Apple said ChatGPT will be powered by OpenAI's latest GPT-4o model on its platforms.

iPhone, iPad, and Mac users will be able to use ChatGPT for free, without creating an account, and ChatGPT Plus subscribers will be able to connect their accounts to access paid features on these devices. Apple said OpenAI will not store ChatGPT requests made from its devices, and it said users' IP addresses will be obscured.

Apple Intelligence features started rolling out to developers for testing in the iOS 18.1 beta last month, but ChatGPT integration is not available yet.

Apple Intelligence features require an iPhone 15 Pro or iPhone 15 Pro Max, or a Mac or iPad equipped with an M1 chip or newer. The device's language must be set to U.S. English, with support for additional languages to roll out over the next year.

Microsoft is also planning to further invest in OpenAI, the report said.

OpenAI created by Elon Musk fyi. Using ChatGPT means you're using an Elon-product.

Unless of course you don't care about whether or not he started the company but rather who runs it today is who really matters. Then you'll admit who runs Tesla today is who really matters and it doesn't matter who started Tesla.

The mental gymnastics of some people I see on Threads/X lmao...

Apple is in talks to invest in OpenAI, a move that would cement ties to a partner integral to its efforts to gain ground in the artificial-intelligence race. Thrive Capital is leading the round.

MS owns 49% of OpenAI’s profits after initially investing $13b.

Interesting. Microsoft is doing great things with OpenAi, Copilot and then deep integration into Azure. It’s interesting what Apple, not much Vs Copilot PC. Apple feels so stale to me, not exciting anymore.

Working with AI, Microsoft and the new Copilot+PC it’s excitement all over.

Unfortunately, consumers in personal life don’t really use Microsoft products it’s an iPhone in every hand.

If Microsoft ever wanted to get back into the mobile game, now it’s the perfect chance with this attraction there gaining in the AI space.

But then again, OpenAi smartphone is in the world with Jonny Ive, might be a rumor

And who cares? Does it actually matter?

That’s a lot of projection when I blatantly see one side with Gold medal mental gymnastics performances every single time I open Twitter to enter a giveaway before running the hell out of there. Lol That being said, I don’t use facebook products either. Lol

I saw this one coming. I think this is probably the best they can do, and they really have no choice now; they are too far behind, and this is just too critical. The recent video MacRumors posted demonstrating the superiority of Google's image editing over Apples was a great example of just how big a problem this is going to become. If Apple gets left behind on AI, it could be devastating to the company, and they likely know it. You don't want the iPhone to become the Blackberry.

This is interesting considering some pro-Apple analysts have argued OpenAI should be paying Apple.

If you can acknowledge that AI is a huge part of the future, and OpenAI is your AI provider, then it makes sense to invest. In this case, I don't think that just being a paying customer is going to cut it when it comes to ensuring that your priorities/direction aligns with their priorities/direction.

Not sure what point you are trying to make. Elon Musk was one of several co-founders of OpenAI and was founding Co-Chair along with Sam Altman in 2015. Elon left the company in 2018 due to conflicts of interest with Tesla. It is indisputable that Altman has been the overall driving force behind OpenAI
