You don't have to be a public company to be bought. Beats wasn't a public company and Apple was able to buy them. Siri wasn't a public company and Apple bought them too. Shazam Entertainment wasn't a public company. Guess what? Apple bought them.
Right, but they are owned by a nonprofit whose charter effectively prohibits selling them.

I asked CGPT4-o how many 'r's in strawberry, and it said two. I asked it to count them and it said three. On the other hand, I asked Siri to close the skylight window in the bathroom, and it said "Now closing the door opener, I'll let you know if it doesn't close" and nothing at all happened after that. So, I think any money spent to acquire or work with OpenAI is probably money well spent.🍸😸

Then buy the IP and shut it down.
That’s basically the same thing. The only thing Apple could semi-realistically do is to poach-hire OpenAI employees, like Microsoft threatened to do when Altman was fired. But it would take a lot of time to rebuild everything, and there’s little reason for OpenAI staff to be interested in that.

Since OpenAI has 2 business structures, you can split off the for-profit structure from the non-profit structure. Then the for-profit structure can be sold while the non-profit remains.

OpenAI CEO says company could become for-profit corporation, The Information reports

June 14 (Reuters) - OpenAI CEO Sam Altman told some shareholders that the company is considering changing its governance structure to a for-profit business that the firm's nonprofit board doesn't control, The Information reported on Friday.

One scenario Altman said the board is considering is a for-profit benefit corporation, which rivals such as Anthropic and xAI are using, the report said, citing a person who heard the comments.

The restructuring discussions are fluid and Altman and his fellow directors could ultimately decide to take a different approach, The Information added.

OpenAI created by Elon Musk fyi. Using ChatGPT means you're using an Elon-product.

Unless of course you don't care about whether or not he started the company but rather who runs it today is who really matters. Then you'll admit who runs Tesla today is who really matters and it doesn't matter who started Tesla.

The mental gymnastics of some people I see on Threads/X lmao...
He was a founder (really an investor, but he got to call himself a founder because he had money), not the creator. And then he threw a tantrum and left almost immediately because they didn't put him in charge, and then reneged on a lot of his funding promises.

And yes, it does matter who is in charge. In OpenAI's case, both Musk and Altman suck, so it doesn't really matter which one you pick. Musk is currently busy running Tesla and Twitter into the ground, so as someone who's thoroughly unimpressed with generative AI as a whole it would have been great to see him bring some of that incompetence to OpenAI, but unfortunately we're stuck with Altman who seems to be significantly less terrible at his job.

IMO that would go against the goals defined in the nonprofit charter, regardless of what Altman is saying, especially if the context is selling everything to Apple.

Not sure what point you are trying to make. Elon Musk was one of several co-founders of OpenAI and was founding Co-Chair along with Sam Altman in 2015. Elon left the company in 2018 due to conflicts of interest with Tesla. It is indisputable that Altman has been the overall driving force behind OpenAI
then the point doesn't apply to you unless you're one of those people who accuses Elon of stealing Tesla and not contributing much to the success of Tesla

Did Elon musk start a competitor to Tesla?
Because he did this for OpenAI …

I would not do this. My sense is that OpenAI does not share beyond words, the same principals around privacy as Apple seems to be committed to.

That’s a lot of projection when I blatantly see one side with Gold medal mental gymnastics performances every single time I open Twitter to enter a giveaway before running the hell out of there.

talk about projection, that description took way too long to get the point across.

I thought I saw a league table showing that Grok (X.com's AI tool) is rapidly catching up with Open AI. Which would suggest this is early days in the race and it's by no means a done deal. In fact maybe there will be many competent players and AI something of a commodity. I rather liked the idea that Apple could surf between them, providing the added user benefit of anonymity of requests.

apple will not be Youtubed.

many years ago, when google bought youtube for what at the time was a huge amount of money, i thought google was crazy. but we know how that turned out. google used the platform and even recreated itself.

right now i am paying for a monthly subscription to Chat GPT on my iPhone.
after 2 months of using it, i cant imagine stopping this subscription.
apple is not satisfied with just incorporating Chat GPT services into its Apple Intelligence.
its thinking of all the millions of people like me who will shift into using apple ONE once they fold Chat GPT into an apple One subscription.

apple cant outright buy Chat GPT right now. but it sure would like to.

Apple is in talks to invest in artificial intelligence company OpenAI, according to sources cited by The Wall Street Journal.

iOS-18-ChatGPT.jpg

The report did not indicate how much money Apple would be investing in OpenAI, or provide any additional details about the discussions, but it said this latest fundraising round would value the ChatGPT maker above $100 billion.

Apple previously announced that ChatGPT integration is coming to Siri on iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia before the end of the year.

With user permission, Siri will be able to show ChatGPT answers directly in response to questions and other prompts. ChatGPT will also be an option for Apple's system-wide Writing Tools feature, allowing users to generate text and images. Apple said ChatGPT will be powered by OpenAI's latest GPT-4o model on its platforms.

iPhone, iPad, and Mac users will be able to use ChatGPT for free, without creating an account, and ChatGPT Plus subscribers will be able to connect their accounts to access paid features on these devices. Apple said OpenAI will not store ChatGPT requests made from its devices, and it said users' IP addresses will be obscured.

Apple Intelligence features started rolling out to developers for testing in the iOS 18.1 beta last month, but ChatGPT integration is not available yet.

Apple Intelligence features require an iPhone 15 Pro or iPhone 15 Pro Max, or a Mac or iPad equipped with an M1 chip or newer. The device's language must be set to U.S. English, with support for additional languages to roll out over the next year.

Microsoft is also planning to further invest in OpenAI, the report said.

This makes no sense... Apple has basically never just blown a massive chunk of cash on a pointless endeavour....

Apple Car: Am I a joke to you?

Interesting. Microsoft is doing great things with OpenAi, Copilot and then deep integration into Azure. It’s interesting what Apple, not much Vs Copilot PC. Apple feels so stale to me, not exciting anymore.

Working with AI, Microsoft and the new Copilot+PC it’s excitement all over.

Unfortunately, consumers in personal life don’t really use Microsoft products it’s an iPhone in every hand.

If Microsoft ever wanted to get back into the mobile game, now it’s the perfect chance with this attraction there gaining in the AI space.

But then again, OpenAi smartphone is in the world with Jonny Ive, might be a rumor

i think the best way to understand this is that microsoft is a technology company

apple is a consumer product company

yes both do…both…but apple builds luxury toys for people first and foremost
