I will never understand how tech works. a $3.4T company needs to buy a $100B company because it can't create its own LLM?

This is more about OpenAI asking for help. They are on track to lose 5 billion dollars this year. Their next model is behind schedule and they don't have the finances to scale up the infrastructure to meet demand.
Only a few companies exist that have the finances to scale up for the next gen of AI. Eventually that might be a (wealthy large ) nation state only ability.

I would like some sort of digital / AI assistance on my devices, but I am very, very reluctant to send any data to OpenAI. These companies were built on stolen data - how likely is it, that they will respect your data and your privacy?

Yes?
Apple sitll can't make its own modem or its own OLED screen etc
Even it doesn't have the expertise or resources to develop and manufacture all its needed goods.
Doubly so when you're talking about cutting edge products like AI. It will take years for Apple to catch up if it ever does ala modems.
Welcome to capitalism.

So far, Apple’s AI strategy has been brilliant. They have on device Apple Intelligence backed up by their own server side processing, and they offer the full power of ChatGPT without paying a nickel for it. Everyone else had to fork over billions of dollars to get it to where it is today and Apple gets it for nothing. Tim Cook is a genius. If they’re looking to invest, it is because they believe that integrating it into the iPhone and other products will result in a greatly increasing valuation of openAI and that investment could lead to a lot more money. Plus, they will be able to have some say in the direction of the company. A recent article argues that rather than being behind Apple is actually leading in AI. I believe they are on the right track with their approach.

OpenAI created by Elon Musk fyi. Using ChatGPT means you're using an Elon-product.

Unless of course you don't care about whether or not he started the company but rather who runs it today is who really matters. Then you'll admit who runs Tesla today is who really matters and it doesn't matter who started Tesla.

The mental gymnastics of some people I see on Threads/X lmao...
Complete BS. Elon was one of the first investors and in the first fundraising
„Elon said we should announce an initial $1B funding commitment to OpenAI. In total, the non-profit has raised less than $45M from Elon and more than $90M from other donors.“

„We couldn’t agree to terms on a for-profit with Elon because we felt it was against the mission for any individual to have absolute control over OpenAI“

But as long as you have an AI to help you out, you can read the story yourself
https://openai.com/index/openai-elon-musk/

Why are you posting such FUD? Just because you can?

Honestly don't get the openAI love, they're just stealing info from Google. they can't do anything for mobile OS except for search and chatbot and Altman is a shady guy.

Gemini powers everything on Android AI, its built for mobile devices like circle to search, magic eraser, screenshots app, add me, magic editor etc etc

I don't want a F&*%^&% chatbot.

ChatGPT lies so brazenly, it makes undergrads look honest. On a whim, I asked it a question about two Roman poets, and it fabricated verses in support of its wrong opinion. I don’t want Siri lying to me too.

The "Bruschetta" mentioned in the image is not made with "Baguette" bread.
Come on...

LOL who came up with the name? Who came up with the goal to do the exact opposite of what Google Deepmind is doing? Who recruited Ilya?

I don't think Apple's AI strategy is tied to OpenAI specifically. They're trying to build different providers into the OS - you choose which one you want and your device interacts with their servers the same way they let you pick your web browser, just for the LLM behind Siri. It's smart, and I suppose this will continue for a long time in the future until it can all happen on-device, which would be the long-term goal. The way they've structured it currently makes it super easy to integrate Gemini, Claude etc. alongside ChatGPT, perhaps even iCloud+ models one day and in the long run more capable devices will migrate more of these tasks to models that live on-device.
Strategically it makes sense - buy the new, more powerful iPhone so you can do this particular thing without a subscription to ChatGPT/Gemini/iCloud+.
I wouldn't say they're behind, it's just a model we haven't seen before and one that plays it safe with antitrust regulations too.

we do not use Chat GPT for any text/word related functions.
current level of Chat GPT is only good at text/word related paragraphs and explanations that lack character; lack human emotion; lack any sense of spirit. not capable of creating any sense of an emotional bond between company+customer.
Thanks for explaining. I can see how image generation can be very useful for illustration of content. But aren't image and video models technically very different from LLMs? OpenAI's claim to fame are the "intelligent" LLMs if I'm not mistaken. I'm more interested in how those are used. I've seen many claims that LLMs as an assistant for programming. Aren't you using them for that?

Both, for me it easily replaces google. I also chat with it to learn about stuff while driving
I don't have access to the latest and greatest models. I only have used the free AI chat on Duckduckgo for very simple questions like recipes or as an ESL grammar questions. They did work quite well for that.

Aren't you worried though, that it will feed you complete rubbish, aka hallucinations when you ask factual questions? It irks me for example, that LLMs are not able to produce references for the 'knowledge' they produce.

Did you read the article? Do you know Elon quit cause he wanted to fight Google on its own since OpenAI didn‘t want to act the way Elpn wanted them to act.

But Musk has lots of money and he knows where to put its money. The last thing I know is that Elon is fascinated by german Flux.1 blackForrest company.

Btw Elon never founded Tesla or was “Mr Tesla” he just knows where to put his money.

Doubt this.

ChatGPT is just a 3rd party plug-in, which can be replaced by any other AI model once deals are set in place.

Anything can be bought for money, anything
Not true, such a blanket statement really only applies to commodities.

There are things people are unwilling to sell for any price, usually things that are unique or very personal.

Their kids, for example.

LOL who came up with the name? Who came up with
He claims he did, but he is an unreliable narrator who peddles conspiracy theories online.
the goal to do the exact opposite of what Google Deepmind is doing?
By opposite of DeepMind you mean take all of the contributions DeepMind has published on AI research and give nothing back. Develop AlphaFold which helps predict protein folding, aiding in medical research?

Thats exactly what OpenAI has done, they took research and contributions that DeepMind has published and have given nothing back. Same thing tesla does, take Waymo research on autonomous driving and give nothing back.

Who recruited Ilya?
Elon Musk sued OpenAI and dropped the suite but the good thing about lawsuits is discovery when all the secrete emails gets revealed.

He wanted OpenAI to merge with Tesla so he can be majority owner and CEO so they told him to F-off so he left. He is a rich guy with lots of money to burn that is why is spent 45 billion on twitter and renamed it X just so he can claim he founded twitter aka X.
