Am I the only one that thinks Mariah Carey wasn't the best person to cheer up the pandemic stressed, economically depressed, "woke cultured" people for the holidays? She picked up her secret phone in her multi-million dollar NY apartment and was like, "Oh well, I'm the only person who can bring back the Christmas spirit.." Also, I don't think her dresses were so family-friendly either. Just my 2 cents.

35. I'm a marketer, but for B2B software - not kids or TV.

I could be totally out-of-touch regarding the media consumption preferences of young people.

I don't have Tik Tok, so that's a massive black mark for me!
Not sure what age you are, but do you really think there are millions on young people into the latest hits/trends on the media platforms to be begging mum and day to be able to watch a really old 50 year old Granny sing ?
Jesus, even when I was at the start of my teens, anyone 50 was so old and out of touch no-one cared.
Mariahs no dummy, she had Ariana and others as guests to expand the audience to younger viewers. The weekend after the special went live, social media was buzzing about the Mariah/Ariana "harmonized whistle" etc. This special convinced me that Mariah is the new Cher.... even generations that wouldn't be caught dead buying one of her regular songs/albums knows who she is and will likely play her classics/holiday music (as evidenced by "All I want for Christmas.." going #1 yet again this year). If she has compelling guests next year I'm sure it will be another hit.

It was absolutely terrible.

Never have I watched something so high budget with so much talent be so lifeless and pointless: The plot is that people are extra cheer-less this year because of the pandemic so Carey goes to the North Pole and puts on a Christmas show for the World. That's it.

There's no conflict or any point where anyone is showing any kind of vulnerability or any point where anything exciting is happening.

The worst thing is how blatantly Mariah breaks out into song over and over again. Not that I wouldn't expect that because the entire production is clearly just a vehicle to hammer in Mariah's many songs one more time.
It's terrible because none of the songs have any place in the weak story and do nothing to underline the plot or move the story forward.

There's even a part where Carey walks away from Santa's workshop and out into the snow while she's is in the middle of performing the Christmas show.. for no reason at all.. just to sing yet another set of songs that have nothing to do with the plot. Wow.

By far one of the worst pieces of media ever produced. Unwatchable!
You sure have a lot to say about something that you deem so unworthy.

And “the worst thing is how blatantly Mariah breaks out into song over and...”

huh??

YO THAT’S LITERALLY WHAT SHE‘S AWESOME AT DOING. Don’t like it, don’t watch it. But stop denigrating her and the people who enjoy her.

GIMME ALLLLLL THE SONGS MARIAH! Keep it coming! I LUUUURRRRVVD THIS SHOW and I welcome as many more as that gorgeous 50yr old babe wants to give us. Haters just be so jealous. And tech guys are the absolute worst out there.

I'm with the majority of the folks here in that this special was absolutely garbage. The outfits looked too sleezy for me and the acting too fake. I'm sure a lot of people gave it watch and turned it off after 5 mins. I would bet that Apple counted these numbers as a "Hit" and didn't ask on viewer satisfaction. I'll know better next year and be sure not to play it.

Where’s that marketing? All i’ve seen is the ”banner” with a giant close up of Mariah.
Marketing isn't just posters and adverts.

Marketing is about positioning a product effectively for a specific audience segment.

Eg. When someone says, 'Apple are fantastic at marketing', they're typically not referring to their (limited) use of adverts, so much as their ability to target a product to a specific segment and solve their problems effectively.

In this case, the Apple Christmas special was brilliant marketing because it took a legendary female singer who is synonymous with Christmas music and served her up in a package that managed to entertain multiple audience segments.

Cheesy Christmas hits for kids; Snoop Dog to get some appeal from Teens; and sexy undertones to rope-in adults too.

It was a well-marketed, well-executed product - as confirmed by the numbers.

...although, I'd rather watch Die Hard.

Word for word THIS!

Mariah was so wooden in between songs, felt rushed, like it was all done in one take.

Really looking forward to watching this with my 10 year old daughter, who got bored half way through and made the comment her dress wasn’t appropriate for Christmas 😂. Terrible effort, hopefully someone better will get ahold of the creative reigns if this is to get a follow up next year.

Thank you.

It probably comes off as if I hate Carey. I don’t at all.

I just think they could have done so much more with her many Christmas songs and quite easily written a story around her songs instead of just dumping them into one that seems like a rushed afterthought.

And yes, that was way more than just a lot of cleavage. She was like one step before wearing nipple tassels. That’s not right for a family show.

This seems like something for old people. Oprah. Mariah Carey Christmas special. They're like the Lawrence Welk Show when I was a kid rolling eyes at my grandparents watching that. I know Apple has armies of people thinking about image and brand, and surely they're smarter than me, but it seems a delicate balance between mass market and keeping their cool brand identity. It could tip any minute into vanilla and frumpiness.

Would you have preferred somebody nobody ever heard of who was evicted after losing their job and three immediate family members due the pandemic, but who can’t sing? Would that have cheered you up?

And certainly there will be no new shows on before then, right?

Maybe one a month, if that ?

I guess what I’m saying is that until they build up their catalog it’s not worth the monthly, for me. Their current release cadence is a trickle.

It was beyond cringey and cheesy and not something that's worth catching a replay.

And $4M to produce it? How much was her payday in that?

They certainly didn't invest in her dresses. My wife: "Why bother even wearing one with all that showing."

The dresses were not family friendly at all. My 8 yr old daughter explicitly questioned her wardrobe choices.

Well, that was disappointing. After last year's Christmas Special, this 18 minute interview and a couple of songs was a real let down. As the interview went on, I kept on thinking that this must just be a promo for the actual special. ?
