Netflix is said to be in advanced negotiations with former President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle to produce a series of high-profile shows for the streaming service, with Apple said to be waiting in line if a deal between the two parties falls through.

The New York Times reports that Netflix is offering to pay the Obamas to produce the exclusive content, according to people familiar with the discussions, although it's unclear how much is on the table given the couple's lack of experience in the media business.

However, rather than use the shows to respond to President Trump or conservative critics, Obama is reportedly interested in treating them as a platform for topics that dominated his presidency, such as health care, voting rights, immigration, foreign policy, and climate change.
The New York Times notes that Obama retains close ties to Ted Sarandos, Netflix's chief content officer. Sarandos is married to Nicole A. Avant, an activist who served as Obama's ambassador to the Bahamas. Reed Hastings, the chief executive of Netflix, was also close to Obama while he was president and an attendee at state dinners, according to the report.

Apple has been comparatively slow at securing original content for its television offering, but the company now has at least 10 television shows in the early stages of development, including an untitled morning show drama starring Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon and an "Amazing Stories" reboot from Steven Spielberg.

Other shows on the tech giant's books include an untitled space drama from Battlestar Galactica creator Ronald D. Moore, a series written by "La La Land" creator Damien Chazelle, a Kristen Wiig comedy series, See, an epic world-building drama, Home, a docuseries focusing on incredible homes, and "Little America," an anthology series from "The Big Sick" creators Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon.

Tim Cook can’t wait to get political again. So much for great products (or stable OSes).

Who would want to watch that? Entertainment should be entertaining. If you want politics there is plenty of that content already.

I don’t really like Obama or his politics. I don’t want to give money to a company that promotes them. I can’t understand why Netflix or Apple would want to have such a show.

I think this would be a perfect fit. Like Apple, Obama pretended to care about a number of causes that he did little about, and got a lot of good PR and incredibly rich while having a horrible effect on the lives of the poorest people around the world. In Obama's case it was through becoming the Deporter in Chief setting records for the deportation of millions of immigrants, and through expanding drone strikes killing thousands of people without a trial and in most cases without any proof they were actually related to terrorism. He got rich cozying up to banks (remember that $400,000 speech? You don't get offered that kind of money if you didn't richly benefit Wall Street). He even called his own policies those of a "moderate Republican" while insanely being labeled socialist. Apple gets rich off of being the world leader of maximizing profit, who in spite of their lefty veneer exploit workers who are working almost as slave labor. Despite the people who make their products earning so little money, Apple is on track to become a trillion-dollar company...

This would trigger the conservatives on this site so hard.

With this should, we could bring back Obama to be President for life. He should rule over these dangerous conservatives with an iron fist and silence them permanently while confiscating their firearms.

At the very least, Apple should promote the de-employment of conservatives throughout this country, to be replaced by much harder working Mexicans and other immigrants.

It's because of the working-class white audience that this site attracts.

The editors here really need to do a better job of attracting a broader audience that's more representative of America, instead of drawing an audience of downtrodden and vulnerable working-class people that's resentful of a black President.

Pitch this episode to Tim. You’ll land an interview at (his) Apple.

Anything that drives Trump voters nuts is ultimately a good thing.

    Everything drives Trump voters nuts.

Honestly, just a picture of Obama literally increases their heart-rate.

I like this. I’ve always admired people who can tell a good story.

"President and Mrs. Obama have always believed in the power of storytelling to inspire,” Eric Schultz, a senior adviser to the former president, said Thursday

Nothing triggers Obama voters more than an extra $1000 in the working classes bank account every year. They’d much rather that go to “infrastructure”.

Why anyone would want to spend their free time listening to a politician is beyond me. All of them are expert truth-spinners and are attracted to power and wealth. It will end up being watched only by the already-converted to the respective viewpoint.

Meanwhile I would love to watch a show like that. It's just good to see that there's still some sane people with political ambitions out there besides Erdogan, Trump, Putin, Le Pen, Beppe Grillo, Wilders, Orban.... (shocking how easily trump fist into this pattern). Listening to Obama talking with some actual intellect rises my mood. Bring it on Netflix.

Maybe just accept that there's people with different views. The biggest danger in politics in our time is that there's no more debate culture but the other party is just THE ENEMY now instead of people with different views like it used to be. We need to fix this.

I, for one, would love if my money were spent (instead of R&D of the new MacBook Pro) on Tim's political agenda and documentaries about some American leftie!!

Good get this out there. Can't wait for all the triggered people who will start calling for the boycott of Netflix, or Apple if this goes through.

    Reality has a liberal bias.

Apple is a footnote in this story, but congrats on only criticising them here.

This has not taken resources away from iOS development. (Believe it or not, programmer and TV execs are not the same people.)

Or maybe he wants high profile content from an incredibly popular figure?
    --- Post Merged, Mar 9, 2018 ---
Every year? False. That was a one time bonus. A REAL benefit would have been a raise of 1000 a year or more, since a 15% tax cut was handed out. Did these people get a 15% pay boost as a result? No. They got a one time gift in the 2-3% range while the company cashes in perpetually. But thankfully for people who invest like myself the lion’s share is being diverted to dividends and buybacks so I benefit far more than any of the workers. It’s sad, and even sadder that people were happy to be duped so easily.

As for infrastructure, isn’t that Trump’s thing? I wonder if you prefer the 30k dinette set for Ben Carson’s office or the 100k+ office doors for Zinke?
