So true. A coworker of mine once won a TV at a company event. She ended up not taking the TV because the tax on it was more than what the TV was worth in the real world.

I think if the prize is less than $600 it isnt taxable

No kidding. On launch day, our local Apple Store employees did hourly runs up and down the lines giving out free water, chips, cookies, donuts, etc. About half way through my wait, they even paid for Chick-fil-a to wheel a cart of chicken nuggets (with sauces!) down the line and give out free boxes. Four hours in line wasn't my ideal situation, but the employees put on a happy face and made us as comfortable as they could.

Nice, I wonder if Microsoft would ever do this for their customers? But then again they probably don't have many customers walking in. :p

Hmm...150 dollars IF you work more than 12 hours on launch day. That's not much of a bonus, especially after it's taxed. I guess it IS retail, so it's basically low skilled labor, but I can't help but think it seems lame. Or not? I guess if I had gotten 150 extra dollars when I worked the Dreamcast launch back at Software Etc. in my younger days I would have been thrilled. :p

Based on what was going on at my local store that day, $150 is too little by an order of magnitude.

I feel sorry for people that live in places with 100%+ tax!

That's FAR from lame in the retail world. I remember working in a retail store way back when... they sure as heck didn't give away $150 bonuses... or bonuses of any kind for that matter. As a poor broke student at the time... $150 would have meant a LOT to me.

Considering the release day of the iPhone brought in over $119,000,000 ya, its lame.

Sounds good to me. In California it's 8 straight time and 4 at time and a half which is in addition to the $150 bonus.

$150 is $18.75 per hour for an 8 hour day and $12.50 for a 12 hour day.

$18.75 per hour is a yearly salary of $39,000.

A cell phone given to an employee is considered taxable income and many companies are now also considering company cell phones that are not restricted to business use only as taxable income also.

It was a TV that you could purchase for around $1000 at a Best Buy or Fry's. But the original MSRP was something like $8k, and that's what the person would have had to pay tax on.

not sure if you are being sarcastic or not. but hmm yeah.

No, I wasn't being sarcastic. Apple's CS is pretty damn good considering the service I've gotten from other tech manufacturers or any company for that matter. Most of the time companies only care about the customers and care less about their employees, I think it's awesome that Apple is taking care of it's front line as well as they do customers.

It's your job to do what your employer tells you to do.

They tried that argument in Nürnberg, and it didn't really work out for the defendants.

Okay, I never said the above. But I'm saying this: Is this your opinion as a slave or is it your opinion as a slave owner?

I think if I work over-time, I'm pretty much entitled to some payment for that.

wow... a WHOLE $150 bucks. lame.

Wow, it must be nice when $150 is lame. I wish I had a mommy and daddy that raised me giving me anything I wanted whenever I wanted it so I could snub my nose at that petty amount of cash.

And just why is it lame? Companies don't owe the employees a darn thing other than their earned wages.

earned wages that are set by said companies.

are you joking? you have a macbook and an iPhone 4 (according to your signature), both luxury Apple products and suddenly $150 means the world to you? i don't know about life in Detroit, but in the real world, $150 is a night out.

They're actually set by the market, which is why I've gotten about $30,000 in raises in only a year . . . because there's a high demand for my position and the only way to retain employees is to compete with other companies' salaries.

I don't think you have a grasp of the real world with that sort of attitude.

You would declare it at the fair market value on your tax return.

anybody who thinks it is "lame" that Apple gave its hourly employees a $150 bonus for working a couple extra hours must fall into the same category of the whiners that feel that Apple owes them free bumpers. I hate this self entitled selfish world we seem to live in these days. I think it is a cool gesture of them to do since they didn't have to do anything at all.

...

Grumbling because they didn't get free iPhones? That is why you don't give people things, then they expect it like they are entitled to it or something. A guy in town here sent his staff all on a trip one year to be nice, next year there was no trip and everyone got pissed off like they were getting the shaft because he didn't send them to Mexico for a week again. In the end he had to get rid of most of em and rehire because they were so bitter lol. Bet their new boss isn't sending them on a trip to be nice

And people complain about how overpriced Apple's computers are when people like you dispose of $150 right down the porcelain bowl on one night.

It really burns my butt to see folks complaining or poo-pooing this gesture like it's nothing. This was an awesome thing to do. I have no idea how many employees this would affect...10,000? It's probably ten-fold that. If it's only 10,000, that's $1.5 million Apple is giving away. Pretty nice if you ask me.

I'm in management at the company I work for and we went through something similar recently. In a genuine act of kindness my company decided to give $200 to employees above and beyond other bonuses or overtime. We heard the same stupid complaints. It cost the company millions.

The saying around here now is: " the only thing worse than not recognizing employees' hard work is recognizing it".
