They tried that argument in Nürnberg, and it didn't really work out for the defendants.

anybody who thinks it is "lame" that Apple gave its hourly employees a $150 bonus for working a couple extra hours must fall into the same category of the whiners that feel that Apple owes them free bumpers. I hate this self entitled selfish world we seem to live in these days. I think it is a cool gesture of them to do since they didn't have to do anything at all.
seriously. "hey, apple. thanks for your crumbs"

earned wages that are set by said companies.
are you joking? you have a macbook and an iPhone 4 (according to your signature), both luxury Apple products and suddenly $150 means the world to you? i don't know about life in Detroit, but in the real world, $150 is a night out.
As you say, it is a "couple" of extra hours.
"They" cold pay the workers better on a regular basis and not on a bonus/provisional basis.
Not towards the purchase price of an iPhone. They pay the same amount as any AT&T customer does.
There weren't enough iPhone 4s produced to give employees free ones, but yeah, giving them $199 in free cash instead of $150 would have been cool.
FWIW, Apple generally pays the tax on small bonuses, including iphones.
Personally, I think bonuses in general are crap. Decide what you want to pay an employee over the course of the year, and pay them that. Bonuses are just psychological manipulation. If you need your employees to work a 12 hour day, tell them to do it, or go find another job. No need to motivate them with extra money in this job market.
I doubt most apple store employees make enough money for the taxes to be a significant amount of that $150.00
I work overtime almost every day and get nothing for it. It is called salary.

I think if the prize is less than $600 it isnt taxable
This report is true. I have an unnamed friend and/or family member that will receive this bonus.
And just why is it lame? Companies don't owe the employees a darn thing other than their earned wages.
Well... my friend worked at Apple retail on 3G launch day two years ago, the hellish disaster in which the brand-new in-store account-setup and activation system turned into a molten heap of slag, with transactions taking as much as an hour to go through while customer's who'd been in line in all night waited and waited, and countless off-channel calls were placed to busy AT&T account reps from noisy sales floors. He got nothing more for it than a full day's pay and three t-shirts (i.e. his new work uniform). He even had to go stand in line at the AT&T store the next day to buy his own. Not that he was upset with Apple or anything, but it wasn't like he got any extra TLC for his stint of combat duty.Wow, Apple takes care of their own employees just as good as they do their customers. NICE.![]()
