anybody who thinks it is "lame" that Apple gave its hourly employees a $150 bonus for working a couple extra hours must fall into the same category of the whiners that feel that Apple owes them free bumpers. I hate this self entitled selfish world we seem to live in these days. I think it is a cool gesture of them to do since they didn't have to do anything at all.

As you say, it is a "couple" of extra hours.

"They" cold pay the workers better on a regular basis and not on a bonus/provisional basis.

seriously. "hey, apple. thanks for your crumbs"

All of you idiots that complain about getting a bonus regarding of what it is. Do you idiots know that these people get close to minimum wage? Do you know how much $150 dollars is In hours? You guys are spoiled *******s. Just shut and go back to your moms basement.

I can guarantee that those who complain don't know what it feels to have to work hard for your money. "oh my mom gives me $100 dollars for cleaning my room"

Man you guys need to get stoned for how stupid yup guys are.

I totally agree, when I first say the article on the homepage I thought "That's nice of Apple" and then I come in here and everyone is complaining about it. Yet, if Apple had given them a 16GB iPhone 4 (Which is $50 more for the subsidized pricing) then everyone would have said that Apple is great.

earned wages that are set by said companies.

are you joking? you have a macbook and an iPhone 4 (according to your signature), both luxury Apple products and suddenly $150 means the world to you? i don't know about life in Detroit, but in the real world, $150 is a night out.

I'll bite.

(a) You say $150 dollars is 'a night out'. The median US personal income is about USD 25,000. That is about $70 dollars a day to pay for food, housing, bills, entertainment. This is not considering the demographic in which the retail store employees usually are, which is probably below the median. The Department of Labor's survey on personal consumption shows that entertainment is usually USD 3,000 a year per person, which is about ten dollars a day. Your assumption that everyone will have USD 150 to spend on a night is unrealistic. For a person that does spend 3,000 a year in entertainment, 150 is a lot.

(b) You say that, for some reason, since the poster has an iPhone and a Macbook, he is surely spoiled like yourself. The fact that he is aware of the world circumstances does not mean he cannot afford some privileges of his own. I also own an iPhone and can tell you I worked really hard for it. Nowhere do I expect anyone to give me $150 dollars for free.

Thing is, they already get paid decent for tje job they're doing. But this is actually pretty common practice for companies with over-qualified employees (like, say, a game developer that have programmers that could get paid a lot more somewhere else. And a lot of Apple Store employees is indeed over-qualified). Instead of high salaries they'll get bonuses. I don't know why exactly but I guess there is a logical reason.

Incredible that people can complain about this.

I think its cool, $150 to me right now would be huge. Gee, i could get a haircut! Much better use than partying it away or something if you ask me.

And FYI, in Florida they follow the FEDERAL overtime law. No OT until you hit over 40 hours for the week. Nada for more than 8 in a day.

Quite the shock when you move from CA to FL and are expecting a decent paycheck for the 16 hour days the new job had.

$150 is not bad for a days work - I work for a tight fisted UK based FTSE 100 company who occasionally chuck the staff a £50 doggy treat if they do something substantial like "save the world". This despite consistent massive profits and over 100% bonuses to directors each year - oh but they can't award a pay rise this year though !!

Not towards the purchase price of an iPhone. They pay the same amount as any AT&T customer does.

There weren't enough iPhone 4s produced to give employees free ones, but yeah, giving them $199 in free cash instead of $150 would have been cool.

Not towards the purchase of a phone, but employees do get a discount on the ATT plan and eventually iPad will be available for discount. Short supply = no discount.

I doubt most apple store employees make enough money for the taxes to be a significant amount of that $150.00

Personally, I think bonuses in general are crap. Decide what you want to pay an employee over the course of the year, and pay them that. Bonuses are just psychological manipulation. If you need your employees to work a 12 hour day, tell them to do it, or go find another job. No need to motivate them with extra money in this job market.

ok, i'll bite.....

yeah -- all employers should take advantage of their employees in this job market. is that what you are saying? then what happens when the job market turns is that your employees remember that and they jump ship to an employer with a better reputation. If you take care of your employees you also get higher productivity out of them.

Stop talking about the takes for goodness sake. We all have to pay taxes. What's your problem about this? Regardless of taxes or not the person receiving the bonus still comes out ahead. This forum really pains me on how "ENTITLED" people THINK they are. You're not even entitled to a job let alone a bonus.

I work overtime almost every day and get nothing for it. It is called salary.

In general those who are getting paid salary are getting much better wages than some one working a non management retail job. So, I'm sorry, not feeling pity for you not getting overtime. As well as you don't have to worry that if you have to miss a few hours or a day ( for example your kid gets really sick and you have to take time off to go get him) not making enough money to pay bills as you will get paid either way.

Wow, I consider 50 dollars a really expensive night out. And maybe those retail workers are affording MacBooks and iPhones cause they know how to budget their money. I work retail, have the new MacBook pro 13" and a new iPhone 4. It's called I save my money and don't waste it on 150 dollar night outs!!!

You obviously never have had to work a low paying job or have rich parents to think that 150 dollars is something you just waste going out and think that if 150 is a large amount to you you can't possibly have found a way to afford a few luxuries.

Honestly it sounds like you are the one who needs a reality check.

Kudos to Apple for doing this. BUT the likelihood of a non-manager working over 12 hours at a retail outlet is very slim. I've worked retail for several years and don't recall that ever happening to myself or any of my coworkers who weren't managers. The object of the retail game is to not give anyone overtime. ;)

How can this thread have any negatives??? All some people can do is complain, complain, complain......

How is this news?

What next?... A report on what brand of toilet paper Apple is buying for the employee bathrooms?

I think this whole Apple phenomena thing might have finally jumped the shark.

Wow, Apple takes care of their own employees just as good as they do their customers. NICE. :)
Well... my friend worked at Apple retail on 3G launch day two years ago, the hellish disaster in which the brand-new in-store account-setup and activation system turned into a molten heap of slag, with transactions taking as much as an hour to go through while customer's who'd been in line in all night waited and waited, and countless off-channel calls were placed to busy AT&T account reps from noisy sales floors. He got nothing more for it than a full day's pay and three t-shirts (i.e. his new work uniform). He even had to go stand in line at the AT&T store the next day to buy his own. Not that he was upset with Apple or anything, but it wasn't like he got any extra TLC for his stint of combat duty.

I rarely go into the forums but today I did. Wow. Just wow. My mind is blown.

In other news: I don't think ALL Apple Employees are all that. It really depends on the store. I knew an ex-manager from an Apple store who was my manager at a Coach store and he couldn't fathom that Amazon didn't charge tax on purchases. I explained that avoiding tax on BRAND NEW products could be cheaper than buying a refurbished product and paying tax on it from Apple's website. He couldn't compute. But he was also married and had sex with our other manager who was not his wife. I didn't like him. A lot of my managers at every store i've worked in cheated with their spouses . . . AND did drugs now that i think about it . . .

I'd sure be happy if my boss gave me an extra 150$ on top of my overtime pay everytime I do overtime. Seeing how I haven't had a pay slip without overtime pay since the start of the year, I'd be seeing close to 2k$ extra right about now.

What is there to whine about exactly ? Base Salary + Overtime pay + 150$. Look a gift horse in the mouth much ?
