Apple to Cut iPhone X Production in the Face of Weak Demand

Well, to be fair those production cuts didn't don't reflect the large price increases accord the board for Apple products (like a $130 pencil). Raising the price on all other Apple products can cause a downward trend on Iphone sales.

Because they are? Bloomberg is fake news too. CNBC is fake news. Nikkei is fake news. All of them have reported fake articles about Apple this year and in the past. Do you want me to dig them up?

WSJ has zero credibility when it comes to Apple. This has nothing to do with politics.

Trump's greatest phrase (republican or democrat) is "fake news." He couldn't be more right about that. The news is AWFUL these days.

Carriers run subsidies all the time. If this is the case, it's a non story. This usually impacts the carrier's margin (not Apple) and designed as a means for acquiring customers on their network. Carrier subsidies are so common, it's not even news. We have no idea what the terms of the contract are, but in general, suppliers like Best Buy, Walmart, ATT, Verizon, etc are free to do whatever they want to sell phones. They are just going to eat it.

Until Apple lowers the Xr on their website, I couldn't care less what carriers are doing. They are competing.

I think this is a fair argument, but it leaves out one key factor about these high iphone prices and carriers. If carriers have to subsidize phones more and more because of the high price, wouldn't that impact carriers bottom lines? It doesn't sound like a sustainable model for carriers have to keep giving out discounts or subsidies.

It's usually something carriers do to attract new customers. Sprint used to be very aggressive about giving out subsidies when they were trying to grow. Now that they are trying to merge with T-Mobile, they have backed off.

I'm not sure what the rest of the point in your comment is about CEO net worths...

But this above is factually untrue.

Apple's current product offerings are several percentage points more expensive accross their entire lineup than their competitors, or other options that are parity to them.

in the Phone space: None of their competitors flagship offerings start at $999. Their closest competitor in this space, Samsung with the S9, starts $300 cheaper. it's only the super niche "note" line that comes close to Apple's current iPhone Xs lineup.
None of the competitors offer a guaranteed 5 years of support, with many avenues of hardware support. That support for some (at least for me), might be worth paying a few bucks more.

Their Computer products are priced very high in comparison to other PC offerings. And their upgrades for devices that can get a BTO option are ridiculously high. often 2-4x the price of similar upgrades through retail channels.
This is the only other viable solution (and some believe better) to windows. If you like the ecosystem you might be willing to pay more to get more.

their accessories are often considered very expensive. The Airpods, HomePod, Apple TV, even the watch are all far more expensive than their competitors products in these spaces.
There is a reason the airpods sold out initially like gangbusters, they are BT++ headphones. Homepod, I heard them hooked up in stereo in a quiet apple store (at the crack of dawn lol), they were fantastic. If I were contemplating such a purchase and had AM, I would purchase the Homepod over the competitors.

Now, don't take this comment to mean anything about quality / ecosystem and whether or not there's value to be found in these higher prices. Thats up to each of us to determine ourselves.

But to believe that Apple's current pricing is "in line" with the industries it's competiting is indicates you really haven't looked very hard outside of the Apple space to see what the rest of the industries are actually offering.
The value proposition is important. It'w why Ferrari can charge it's prices, and Mercedes can charge it's prices on an S class, etc. Saying they are all cars is technically true and even a 10 year old Hyundai Elantra can do the same basic job as a Ferrari, maybe even better in snow. (But then there is that Hyundai value proposition)

Apple is extremely highly priced right now. People liken it to the 90's when Apple was also extremely high priced. it's called "the Apple Tax" for a reason.
It's the value proposition again that controls pricing. Apple knows their customers, base, product mix and what prices should be charged for the services it sells.

It does, but carriers have a different model. They make high margins on money from the monthly service fees, so they can afford to get you locked in with cheaper hardware. Apple makes money on selling phones, so they aren’t going to subsidize their products. Because of this, they will sell you phones you want for cheap to suck you in.

Apples services are awful everywhere apart from Apples hardware. They aren't interested in the slightest in your experience on Android being any good they just want you to buy an iPhone.

As I said they see services as an add on to their hardware.
Other benefits of Spotify on Android include

When phone is is in landscape when I place if on gym equipment the album cover/play controls screen does rotate to view correctly.

I can swipe album cover on above screen to advance track. Easier than pressing double arrow key when exercising.

Does provide good curated daily playlists for my music taste.

Edit. Corrections :)

Do they? Other than the token gesture of the Android Apple Music app I haven't really seem anything that suggests this.

For instance if I use Spotify I can use it on my iPhone , on my wifes iPad, on my Mac, on my Amazon Fire TV, on my sons PS4. Its a truly cross platform service. If I subscribe to Apple Music i'm ok on the iPhone, Mac and iPad but forget streaming via my TV unless I buy an Apple TV.

The upcoming TV service, will that be available on Roku? Fire TV? Chromecast? I very much doubt it., reports like this certainly suggest not.

How much traction would Netflix have got with their content if it was tied to their own hardware and their hardware was extremely expensive relative to competing products? My guess is not much.

I just don't think Apple is very good at services. I think they see services as a way of selling the hardware. They don't see them like a Netflix or a Spotify does.
[doublepost=1542987765][/doublepost]

Ok we'll see. As above i'm not super convinced about their services. The watch has a lot of potential particularly as a medical device but Apple has got to tread carefully in that market. Cost is likely to be a major factor.
Great post.

Of course nowadays (and for some time) you don't even need Netflix hardware as any TV has a Netflix app, which runs fast and is kept automatically updated.

The same can also be said of Youtube.

And that is something Apple was never very good at. iTunes was always poorly supported with Windows. Today with a lot more different situations, services and devices the shortcomings are even more obvious.

I think it’s a good news. Was gutted the IPhone X was off the market. Some how I’m happy my favourite company is struggling. Too much focus on creating more and mo emojis and making their products more expensive.

Its hard to see a point in getting 1000-1200,- worth of phone.
Better camera? Well still not better than my old Cannon G12. Which I use when need really good pictures.

Better processor? 50% quicker? What for? Games?- it became impossible to find a descent game that would not be “pay- to play”. Got normal console- buy a game- enjoy endless hours of good gaming. Apple developers became insanely greedy.

Face ID? Yeah baby, you can send live emojis to your boss. Month later you’ll forget you have that.

Smaller with bigger screen- yes this is a good one.

Did I miss anything?
Typing password is better for security. Fingerprint reader just makes it easier when shopping.

I oversimplified it but it relates to your option b). Apple think because they have such a loyal following they can up all the prices and people will still pay it. Some will but it looks like a lot of people won't Just look at the increase in the base model costings for the Mac Mini. It's scandalous.

At the end of the day, Apple are a business and appeasing the shareholders and maximising profit is their ultimate goal but if they chipped away at their huge margins and looked at ways to bring down costs they would sell more and potentially make more money.

As the saying goes - Apple is in the business of making money.

I would have liked the iPhone XR since the iPhone X, XS and XS Max give me eyestrain and headaches (OLED fantastic :( ). But the XR is way too big for me. I went with the normal iPhone 8, cheaper and the size that I want. Very happy with my choice, paid less and got an up-to-date phone. I can imagine many more are thinking the same way.

This is just imvho, but as a macbook owner and android user this is a 3 fold problem
1. is Apples prices, way to high for what you get. I tend to use our surface far more than the macbook. Wife won't touch the Mac. She says using it is more work and not conducive.
2. Android users are getting more and more into using AI, I started relying heavily on it. Siri is as dumb as a box of rocks.
Apple is seriously lagging behind.
3. Services, people who buy MS office get like 150gb of cloud storage for free why would I or anyone pay apples prices for icloud.
Apple needs to rethink its strategy.
I almost switched us to iPhones this year but not at those prices, it's not a matter of being able to afford them it was a matter of principle. 2 s9+ for 950 or 1 iPhone, I want to retire soon.

To those saying android phones are cheap and laggy are wrong big time, opening of apps and scrolling sites was every bit as fast or faster on my galaxy s9+ vs families iPhones XR and XS' they have. We had fun comparing.
Btw Samsung and android is getting better at updates my s9+ has been getting security updates monthly. Even our old lg's went from nougat to oreo over the 2yrs we had them.
As prices rise and incomes don't it leaves Apple in a serious bind.

Not in a million years.

They will drop the iPhone 7, but why would they give you so much storage standard in the poor-person model?

It was rumored that they would drop the price to $899 this year, but they didn't. I'm THRILLED that it didn't work for them. Hope they get screwed even more.

Not always! You have a brand and that's your most valuable asset.

Gucci, Chanel and the like literally burn old stock. If it's sold at discounted prices, it damages brand value - and the people buying that $3,000 handbag won't be so inclined to do that when you can wait some time and have it for $1,000.
Except Gucci and the like don't offer other services like Apple. Apple wants and needs more people to join those services and they won't draw those people in pricing most out of it.

And let's not forget all of the missing features and services not provided outside the big US and UK market. Netflix and Spotify treat me as a world customer. Apple no.

I just refuse to ever buy it. The reason any company offers these warranties is to increase their profits because more people who bought the warranty will never use it then those who will. Apple has enough of my money.
I bought a cheaper 3rd party insurance for my x. I have to young boys (4&7) at home and refuse to pay for the broken screen that may occur. It is almost 500€ in Germany. Insurance is 60€ per year. Expansive but a lot cheaper than Apples offering.

Don't blame OLED for the eyestrain, blame Apple for using cheap panels and batteries and using aggressive PWM to cover it

Which is why it's omission on Android app is unacceptable. I don't know what they hope to achieve by this. Or is it just sloppy programming? Breaks in live albums applause etc are not an issue but it spoils albums like Dark Side of the Moon, and probably 50% of prog albums.
I don't know about Android but I streamed an album (Equinox Infinity by Jean Michel Jarre) and it was definitely gapless.

Has this happen before? I don't recall such. Will this have a domino effect in future regions? Seems like this has opened a Pandora's box for Apple with prices of future products with a dose of competitors equally sufficient products at a lower price-point. What does this do with their stock valuation?

One of the Samsung g7 or g8 phones gave me headaches...I’m not the only one discussing this. Maybe not as aggressive but still can cause headaches.
Yeah some people are very sensitive to the flicker. All in All Samsung have done a great job in their phones to minimise the issue. Not sure what Apple is doing differently to make it more apparent on the X and Xs. I was at the Apple store recently looking at the new MBA and had a play with the Xs Maxx and when I turned the brightness down the flicker was quite noticeable. No such issue on my S9+.
