But an edge-to-edge display doesn't automatically mean it also extends down to cover the phone's sides. Edge-to-edge technically means extending just to the upper four edges of the phone, and maybe a tiny bit below that, since the sides are a different area than the edges.
The Galaxy S6 through S9 seem more like what Apple might be planning, where the display curves down a bit past the upper edges (though on those models, it's just on left and right), while still leaving at least some metal banding further down by which to grip the phone. My suspicion is that Apple might not be aiming for even that amount of side coverage for the display, but rather just a slight downward curve, which when viewed from the front shows only a bezel-less display area.

the edge to edge iphone is a horrible idea. how would you even hold it? also a case wouldn’t even be an option. that is such a niche product it should be nowhere near the mainstream iphone lineup.
Apple is working on "the biggest set of iPhone revamps in the product's history," according to the latest word from Bloomberg's Mark Gurman.
Specifically, he is referring to the long-rumored foldable iPhone, as well as an ambitious 20th-anniversary iPhone with a truly "edge-to-edge" design.
In an in-depth profile of Apple's hardware engineering chief John Ternus, who is widely considered to be the leading candidate to become Apple's next CEO whenever Tim Cook steps down, Gurman said Ternus is "overseeing the biggest set of iPhone revamps in the product's history, including a foldable model this year and a version with an edge-to-edge screen that could arrive as early as 2027, for the device's 20th anniversary."
Apple is expected to unveil the foldable iPhone in September this year, while the 20th-anniversary iPhone would debut next year, if such a device materializes. Apple unveiled the original iPhone in January 2007, so the iconic device turns 20 next year.
Given the article was focused on Ternus, it did not provide any further details about these iPhone models, but there are already plenty of rumors.
Like Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 7, the foldable iPhone will open up like a book, providing users with a large screen for watching videos, playing games, and multitasking. iOS 27 is expected to be optimized for the foldable iPhone, allowing for side-by-side apps.
A few months ago, a report said the foldable iPhone will be equipped with a 7.7-inch inner display, and a 5.3-inch outer display. It was initially rumored that the device would have a virtually "crease-free" inner display, but it was later reported that Apple is using technology that "reduces the crease without eliminating it entirely."
Apple supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo expects the foldable iPhone to have two rear cameras, one front camera, and a Touch ID power button instead of Face ID.
As for the 20th-anniversary iPhone, previous reports have indicated that the device will have a seamless design, with a curved glass enclosure and no cutouts in the display. To achieve this, the front camera would be located under the screen.
It is unclear if Apple will be able to pull off such a device by next year, but if it does, then it truly would be a big two years ahead for the iPhone.

Years as an Apple customer and observer, reveal that “excitement” is a wasted emotion at this point given the company’s current state of affairs.
Ultra conservative and risk averse, rumors of great advances usually end up being suspended or delayed ad infinitum.
The edge will be a virtual bezel as wide as the dynamic-island is high, displaying contents/info on all four sides, and named dynamic shoreline. All I want to see is the Pro and Pro Max take the form of the air. just run the three cameras across the pill i.e. Pixel. Who cares if you will get called un original. The air is the best I have I have ever handled. Light, comfortable, the right size, it's just missing camera performance.
If they even had dual cameras from the regular 17 I would almost be swayed to move from my pixel 8 pro to it.

I'm wondering whether this year might be a year when we get a bigger step towards your (and my) wish than usual.
Quite a few years ago we had a big jump forward in battery life that, with so many of the upcoming features leaked beforehand, was one of the extremely rare occasions when I got a genuine surprise while watching the live-stream of an iPhone launch event - to the extent that when Tim Cook (I think, or maybe the hardware guy at the time; I forget) announced the percentage increase in battery life vs the previous model I misheard it as "over 13%" because that was more in line with the sort of year-on-year increase I was expecting (at best) and then saw on the slide that he's actually said "over 30%".
Might we get to a >30% increase in battery life for the iPhone 18 Pro Max vs the 17 Pro Max this year? I doubt that but I do think that a few stars might be aligning for more than a 10% - 15% increase. In particular...
1 - Rumours that the main body might be getting a bit thicker to fit in a bigger battery. The rumour is that the increase in thickness will be a fraction of a mm but it all helps.
2 - As a European buyer I already lose a bit of battery capacity compared to users in the USA and (I think) a few other countries because I still have a physical SIM card slot. There must surely be some worthwhile logistics and manufacturing efficiencies to be had by not producing 2 versions of the affected models with different PCBs, different chassis and different batteries so I'm hoping that this might be the year when Apple makes at least the Pro models eSIM-only worldwide. It has now laid the groundwork for that with the iPhone Air so I do think there's a pretty good chance that 2026 might finally be the year when that happens.
3 - The shift to 2nm for the SoC should give some worthwhile increases in power efficiency.
4 - Apple has shown better power efficiency with the C1 & C1X modem vs the Qualcomm equivalents; I think the claim is 30% less energy usage for the C1X. If Apple can deliver similar power savings with the C2 that is rumoured to be coming with the next generation of iPhones, at least for the Pro models, that could be a pretty big deal because the modem is active 24/7 when not in airplane mode even if it's just hopping from tower to tower ad you drive/walk around.
5 - There is also a rumour that the next iPhones (again I think maybe just the Pros but I'm not sure) will switch from LPTO to LPTO+ screens. I know nothing about screen technology so those are just meaningless jumbles of letters to me but LPTO+ is said to be more power-efficient than the current LPTO screens (I'm not sure by how much) so that could be another boost to battery life.
6 - There are rumours that iOS 27 (and MacOS/iPadOS 27) are going to focus very heavily on bug fixes and on stability and performance rather than adding new features so basically focussing more on consolidating and cleaning up the current code base than on extending it. That sort of tidying up often also leads to optimisations of existing functionality as well as fixes to broken stuff and every instruction optimised out of some frequently used library function or system call is a power saving however modest (and sometimes it can be significant).
So all in all if Apple were to deliver on most, or even better on all of those changes above for the iPhone 18 (it's the Pro Max that I care about) then I do think that this year's announcement might be quite exciting when it comes to battery life.
Then give us an option to turn off that stupid feature that scrolls back all the way to the top when I accidentally touch the top of the screen. It drives me nuts and the only thing I hate in my iPhone 17.

Even with case this happens. So many times the camera app pops up because I touched the edge of the screen while putting the phone into my pocket. My iPhone is on iOS18, so I can't turn it off eiher - no I won't update to iOS26!
The most annoying thing still is: screen shots. I cannot even count the amount of screen-shots I made of the lock screen, just because I grabbed the phone from my pocket or bag.
