Apple Reportedly Preparing to Seed Builds of Mac OS X 10.6.3 to Developers

I just want the fan to go back to sounding normal on my Radeon HD 3870 Mac PC Edition video card. It sounds crazy in Snow Leopard.

Yet on Leopard and my Windows XP drive it’s nice and quiet unless I’m playing a game.

10.6 seems like a disappointment so far. I don't see much excitement coming until we get some systems with multicore cpus and gpus that can take advantage of its performance enhancements.

We have them already. We're waiting for software to catch up ;)

Hang after Wake

I'm quite bummed no one has mentioned the problem I have :(.

On my Mac Pro (4-core '09) there's network related hangs after wake-from-sleep (I think).. damn weird one. Everything is fine and I put the computer to sleep. I put the iPhone in its dock or otherwise wake the computer and .. well nothing, all goes ok . But the some other day every other frickin' app might hang after waking from sleep.

And by apps I mean those that use the network like Adium, Vienna, Safari, iStat pro (dashboard widget). Adium stops responding, Safari and Vienna just keep loading and loading and loading... never finding anything but they don't time out much either. iTunes, Finder and others might also stop responding.

Sometimes killing automountd might help but usually the only solution is just to reboot. And I mean holding the frickin' button down boot because OS X hangs after closing all programs (that one can see, just hangs showing you the desktop background). That's bound to do some good to your hard drive.. hard boot once a day keeps a 'puter healthy .

Anyways.. haven't been able to find a common factor in anything. Not every wake from sleep, different apps removed.. January '06 Macbook Pro is not having the same issues. Going back to Leopard or clean install don't sound too good so I can only hope the next update fixes this...

And yeah.. I'm not having any of the other issues mentioned before me :D.

Is this more of a sign of a failing hard drive on the Mac? I get the spinning colored pinwheel a lot when switching between applications. I'm guessing maybe things are having trouble because of disk access issues. My MacBook Pro doesn't have a hard drive indicator light (does any Mac?), so I never know when it is accessing the disk.

Here is a little tip you can do to test your HDD to see if it is failing. A free download that will only work 5 times (you can only launch the program 5 times), but it checks the SMART status of your drive. This isn't fool-proof but majority of the time it is accurate.

http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/system_disk_utilities/smartutility.html

or you can just google "SMART utility mac"

Good luck with that.

How disappointing.

I'm still running Tiger 10.4.11 - still the best OS Apple ever put out. Rock solid, I never had a single kernel panic on any of my computers. Same experience with several of my friends, who moved onto Leopard and found it much less stable. Now SL is even worse than Leopard. How disappointing. Never in a million years did I think that OS X would only get less efficient and stable with time. All that talk about SL optimizing everything - and it's only worse. As for apps, I'm about to give up on Safari. When, oh when will Apple fix Safari, so it doesn't consume 600MB of memory after a few hours.

Do you have any stats to back up your claims of less stability & speed than Leopard? The thing to remember is that a majority of users that have no issues do not complain. The users that do are on here and other forums seeking help.

In my (and many other friends opinions) Snow Leopard is a refined, faster, more stable version of Leopard as advertised.

Have you used it yet (as you stated you run Tiger) or just going off of your friends experiences?

Not quite "after wake"

Yes, I'm quoting myself... The hanging started happening while writing here on the forum so not quite "hang after wake from sleep".

Anyway. Damn did it come out of the blue.. I finally got everything working by first killing iTunes, Safari and Vienna and only after them killing automountd. As soon as I killed it the Little Snitch network monitor lit up like a christmas tree.. and I don't think I killed any other apps than those 3. And all the while through this Terminal was pinging google.com successfully.

I agree. Despite the pesky network hanging problem I have I think SL is exactly as advertised. An optimization and refinement to a great OS with a few new features and new APIs. And I found Leopard to be much better than Tiger. Sure, I remember having some issues with NFS moving from Tiger to Leopard but nothing all that critical and some update fixed that.

And btw.. off topic.. just noticed with the last Java update that my old (32bit Intel) MBP now also has Java 6 (with SL). I remember them saying at some point that they wouldn't make a 32bit Java 6-build. And I think they didn't until SL.

How about the '09 Mac Pro with a few of those nVidia GT 120's or one Radeon HD 4870.

Mac Pro, yes. Waiting for a new generation of laptops though (or a midrange tower, when hell freezes over).

10.5.8 is absolutely rock solid for me on three machines, with both Intel and PPC. I've only played a little with SL but I haven't seen any panics there either.

Yeah there's hoping that ~1-2 months and an update to MPB. Although I'm not in the market right now but you never know if you win the lottery or something :D.

I am ready to chime in with old corpse.

Tiger ruled, leo is okish (updated a month ago to 10.5.8) and I wont upgrade
any production machines to SL before 10.6.8.

The working enviroment (macpros+Lighroom,FCP,CS3 etc) is realtively stable on leo,but not as stable as Tiger. But some apps (LR..) is slower on leo.

And dont get me started on SL, bugs in FCP,bugs in CS3/4,bugs in...
So,maybe will update to SL at the end of 2011.
Or go straight to 10.7.

how about the one where my dashboard weather widgets keep moving themselves around

Glad I'm not the only one with that problem.

Does any one have a problem when going from using an external monitor to the laptop's built in one? I sometimes lose my desktop icons and have to restart Finder to get them back. I also have a problem with my mouse cursor "tearing" until I do something like hovering over a link on a website, which fixes it.

Which ones would those be?

Uh what? Either im totally missunderstanding you or you've been living under a rock.

Laptops haven't caught up yet - true, but how about the i5 (4 corse) or i7 (8, with HT) or get a MP (16 with HT) or wait till spring (24 with HT).

As for opencl, not sure wich cards support it at the moment, but most shipped from a few years ago should - as long as driver support is in..

I think you are misunderstanding me. I was really asking which systems he was referring to, not implying that none existed.

I guess I should say laptops are the only Apple systems I care about. The Mac Pro is overpowered for my home use, I'm not interested the mini or iMacs because they aren't expandable. I'm going the hackintosh route to get an affordable single i7-based system, so it will be interesting to see how 10.6 performs on it.

i have never waited so long before to update my company's systems.
we are still all running 10.5.8
waiting for most of the problems to be long cleared up before we risk problems.
i think that apple understands that there are millions more like us, waiting for a great 10.6.3

I also am waiting for a few more fixes before I update. I need my MB to run without issues and 10.5.8 has been doing the job nicely.

I don't have any stats and I have not run Leo or SL - I'm too scared to do so. I use FCP 4.5 HD and I need a stable system. For me 10.4.11 is perfect. "It just works". FCP itself (as many apps) has bugs of course, but the OS itself, 10.4.11 is rock, rock, rock solid. I'm scared to death to move off it. Unfortunately I don't have much choice. The HD video demands new hardware, and it's time for me to buy - but I'm so scared of getting off my stable Tiger, I'm ready to throw up from fear. I'm scared to death of the SL stability stories. I actually have nightmares. Tiger has been such bliss for me. I can't let it go. I'm being forced though. Pray for me.
