According to multiple sources and a quick Google search the iPhone sales growth for the UK only is 0.40% to this time last year. If it’s 14% for Western Europe then the UK contributes very little to that it seems. I’m not making it up when I observe the lack of newer devices in the wild here and the introduction of 3 year contracts and trade ins suggests Apple needed a new strategy here for a slower market.
So then Europe got to 14% revenue growth without the UK, one of the biggest markets in Europe? That would mean other countries in Europe were much higher than 14% growth to counter a struggling UK? No. "Quick Google searches" yield a bunch of garbage. We have the data and it's 14% revenue growth in the region. The money has to come from somewhere. Maybe people in the UK bought a lot of HomePods?

Lord, I simply can't keep responding to you.

The iPhone 7 and 8 are selling extremely well here at the moment, especially as we’ve just had Christmas. I would imagine the XR is doing fine too now the prices have come down. I’ve never said iPhone sales are poor here, just the newer devices are not dominating. This isn’t to suggest they are not selling at all, but higher prices have had a significant impact on their popularity and demand.

The UK used to be Apples biggest market in Europe but that may no longer be the case.

I think if you put bias aside there are so many great phones available at the moment, the midrange phones have closed the gap to the flagships. There are great choices out there be it iOS or Android, just pick your poison and enjoy your device!

That’s precisely what consumers are doing - voting with their wallets.

Come end of this month, Apple will announce their earnings for the quarter, and we will see whether their current business strategy has been the right one.

You see that's where me and you differ, I could care less how much money a company makes, i care about having the best product I can get for my money. It's better for me if companies are not making a huge profit margin as that means they are taking more of my hard earned. It's the precise reason my love for Apple products has fallen in the past 5 years. They keep upping thier profit margins and squeezing the consumer. Apple used to be a company that made great products for the people at a reasonable price.

To me, Apple's profit is the ultimate proof. If people like their products, they will buy them. And if people don't like their products, they won't. And the market will work itself out in the end.

You may not like the prices Apple is charging, but if they continue to post record earnings, this shows that there are still no lack of consumers willing to pay a premium for the unique experience that only Apple can offer. And I feel that says as much about the success Apple continues to enjoy despite the numerous criticisms and cynicism levelled at it.

I think it says more about human nature then anything, Apple is somewhat of a status symbol, its 'cool' to own an Apple product. They sell alot of products on brand name alone. To me thier continued success with the huge profit margins shows me just how much a brand name like Apple matters. Put an Apple logo on a inferior device and vice versa and guess which one will sell more ;) The Apple ecosystem is also a huge reason for thier success.

Either way competition is great for consumers, there are some great phones to choose from at the moment.

I’m sure I’m not the only iPhone user that perhaps sends the company mixed messages by buying a device I’m not 100% happy with. If Apples research and development starts with simply an accountant looking at figures and not gaging customer feedback at all, its a risky strategy as the smartphone market continues to evolve.

I’m sure even the mighty Apple isn’t ignoring the fact 21 million less iPhone users are upgrading since 2016 even if the revenue gap has been bridged with higher unit prices. That would be shortsighted IMO.

What's this 21 million number that you're referencing?

It is funny how certain people undervalue Apple’s social status symbol. I remember when I bought my first iPhone on Verizon. My non-Verizon iPhone peers were very proud that I have joined their clique.

He's trying to cherrypick the one outlier year Apple sold 231M iPhones when they released a large screen iPhone in the iPhone 6. He can't even get that right though because Apple just sold nearly 218M phones in 2018, so the difference is only 13M, not 21M.

Also, Apple sold the 218M iPhones in 2018 at $761 each for $166B in revenue. I'd much rather have that than the 231M at $660 each for $155B in iPhone revenue.

Any other number he's using us made up. My numbers are right bc they are from the 10K.

I think it all depends on your social circles though. The iPhone isn’t a status symbol among the people I know and hang around with purely because everybody owns one. It’s more the norm than anything unique and a status of wealth etc. In many cultures though I’m sure a more expensive phone is perhaps something to show off and be proud of. I don’t think the status symbolism concerning iPhones is a general feeling globally and depends where you are.

In my social circles, it’s mixed 50/50. The ones with an iPhone have it because they are used to it. The ones that don’t have it, don’t like it because of its limitations.

I believe the iPhone is not necessarily a wealth status but a social status. I don’t find social and wealth completely synonymous because you can not be wealthy and still own an iPhone.
