Was trying to think of how Apple could say no to these guys - maybe this is an invitation to negotiation. They could probably change production of older chips (at larger nm sizes) to say Samsung (I think they're the ones closest to TMSC tech wise...poor Intel there)...but they're always behind by a couple of nm in size.

Course if TMSC is asking for 6% that's not an outrageous amount either. Probably will meet in the middle someplace. Can't see Tim actually saying we won't improve chip die size going forward...lol

True, although Apple held pricing on the iPhone 14 and 14 Pro's the same as the 13's and the 12's I believe. At least here in the U.S. where its prices are based on the U.S. dollar. And some of the new Mac's actually went down in price with the swtchover to Apple's chips. So seems like Apple is keeping those throttled back for the most part.

Now the dollar has been strengthening (as interest rates were raised here) and some currencies like the Pound have nose dived over that time period resulting in significant price increases in different countries just to keep the same relative dollar price, not to mention some countries have significant tech taxes.
Each foundry should have its own PDK. So if Apple changes foundries it will likely have to redo some design and simulation work to ensure that the components work as intended.

In the end we're going to be the ones paying...That said, I understand Apple's point of view.
They cannot increase the prices once again in such a short time, as they just increased them by quite a margin recently (especially in Europe).

Sure would be awesome if people didn’t have to purchase gas to drive to work, and food to, oh IDK, LIVE.

I’m always fascinated when people complain about things like needing to buy gas to commute when it’s not particularly hard to find remote work these days. And of course as we all know modern people sure seem able to control their appetites and portion sizes. No obesity epidemic or spoiled wastrel behavior at all!

I've got the privilege of working for a Canadian insurance company based out of Cambridge. They forced me back into the office. No compromise either. Most days are without meetings. Many meetings are virtual anyway. Total waste of time, energy, resources, etc. The best is when I see the VPs sitting in their office... having virtual meetings. This company is ridiculous.

You are choosing to stay at a company with a ridiculous setup. Why are you on here instead of looking for a job with a more sensible competitor?

Once pent-up demand from supply chain disruptions are satisfied, I don't think it's a great time to be in the foundry business and Apple probably has some leverage here.

TSMC is facing trouble elsewhere too: Intel's GPUs have flopped before ever being launched, Nvidia wants to shed TSMC capacity as it has warehouses full of 30 series GPUs. All that is before a global recession is factored in. AMD might ride to TSMC's rescue, but I'm not sure it's products are going to be a big enough hit.

Sure people can choose to eat less, but at some point you still have to eat, and not everyone has the luxury of not driving to work. My husband never leaves the house in his vehicle unless he’s going to work - he’s a homebody like that. His gas bill is still $400+ per month, and that’s with prices down $1/gallon from a few months ago.

If the gas bill is THAT high in a month I have to wonder about the MPG of the vehicle you have and if you also chose to live very far from the workplace, as well as why you made those choices and how much you saved in the process.

Interesting. What if TSMC said "No price increase, no chips for you."

Wish they would, TSMC surely have Apple by the balls here. If TSMC stopped today where else is Apple going to go at this short notice and be able to supply Apple the massive quantity they need, Apple's business would plummet as they rely on those chips. TSMC has other customers and more would be lining up if they had plenty of extra capacity.

It may hurt TSMC in the short term but Apple needs them more than they need Apple.

Imagine if consumers as a group decided that price hikes were unacceptable and "just said no" instead of rolling over and "just paying up"- even scrambling to "be first" at doing so- with some slinging how they are "forced" to pay more.

If inflation is an enemy to all, the best way to quickly wrangle it is for people as a group to decide the money is worth more than the new stuff they want to buy. Stop "just paying" and prices will soon start coming down trying to find a level when consumers will once again trade money for stuff. The harder the crowd clings to their dollars, the faster and greater prices would come down.

If Apple is your hero/God/example, do as Apple does: refuse to pay higher prices.

The vast majority of things money buys is not needed, just wanted. Focus on absolute needs for a while and the want stuff will be buyable for less.
You are right. Unfortunately people are too selfish, self-entitled, hedonistic, and egocentric to work collectively like this. The pandemic was / is a clear indicator of this … sadly.

Man if only I could do that at the pump or grocery store.
We can but not paying but then we starve and can't drive anywhere. So what does the article. If you don't want to pay then you don't get the product so you can't make the things to sell

I'm working on it, believe me. But it's been busy at work so dont have too much free time to hunt for gigs, but im working on that.

The worst part of all this, is that I was hired as remote employee, with a potential to work hybrid in a city that i could commute to and stay at my parents whenever needed. Instead, they enforced 3 days a week with an hour commute each way. No room for compromise either, at all (cant start a bit later to not be stuck in traffic, cant leave a bit early to beat the traffic). 3 other people in my team have already quit about the issue that affected them even worse, and the entire department quit upon arrival of the new director last year as well, so everyone right now is new... at least whatevers left of the team. This is the first time in my life where I've experienced this kind of toxic environment where employees really hate their managers and VPs.

I honestly can't wait to quit and leave a scathing employer review.

TSMC is the most advanced chip fabrication facility currently with their 3nm and 4nm processes.

Apple is high as a kite.

If TSMC decides to say **** it. No other fab currently has fabrication line space and apple would need to realize the chips produced using different processes are not the same at other facilities and would have to change how they do everything.

THere is a reason why the highest performing parts use TSMC.

Apple would be ****ed. Apple will have to realize some price increase because TSMC can literally say ok fine bye. and still be insanely profitable. while apple searches for other fabs who don't have the capacity they need.

Are those actually price hikes, or, normal % changes for inflation and currency fluctuations these days?

I know Apple wants to own the world, but they also want to be paid fair market (ok sometimes more) for their products, so why can't they pay their share to suppliers?
Problem is normal today is unreasonable amouts of increases at an unreasonable frequency. Used to be maybe a percent or so every year or few years. Now you blink your eyes again and something else is up double digit percents.

not a chance that those 2 can deliver what TSMC is
Reportedly Intel has an exclusive on the initial deliveries of the next generation lithography machines from ASML. Not clear how TSMC will remain the technology when those systems start coming on line.

Clearly TSMC is ok with price hikes for their consumer (Apple).

Consumers can also refuse to accept price hikes from Apple. Just don't buy their products - problem solved.
Yea and at least Apple products are not a necessity like food and gas to a point. I agree a cell can be a "need", but you can get a $70 flip like my dad uses or a even an inexpensive Android
