How about build their own cloud storage system rather than be Google's byotch. Apple is one of the most profitable companies on the planet, they can afford to create their own cloud storage system if they really wanted to. I'm so sick of people defending Apple no matter how cheapskate they become. I'm sure they save a lot of money using other companies' cloud storage, but that also puts them at the mercy of the other companies.

You realize that Apple *does* have their own data centres and *is* building more, right? But in the meantime, they need fast, reliable cloud storage, so it makes perfect business sense to utilize existing infrastructure. It has nothing to do with being cheap. Is that what you were actually thinking?

And a disaster waiting to happen.

If anyone - NSA, CIA, China, Russia, NK, companies, private individuals at Google etc - are archiving these images if (or is it not a question of if, only when?) Apple's keys are ever compromised, everything that was stored there will be compromised.

Using off-device keys for any iCloud data is awful.

Apple having the keys is ensure there is NOT a high level of security since there are numerous ways they can be compromised, including subpoena and hacking.

This is a HUGE 3 million TB target. Just the fact that it is publicized makes it even more so - of course security through obscurity is never a good plan.

Having an encryption key in a place(mhsn) that is not where the encrypted data is IS part SOP security. (See how that works? 2 separate netsec places to hack).

No, everything is not compromised by obtaining the key. Seriously wow.

subpoena? That is the reddest of red herrings of all your post. If a company/you have the key and the court says hand it over, right or wrong, once the appeal dies, that’s it. You can choose not to and what happens will be determined by you your lawyer and the guy with the key to your jail cell.

Geographic redundancy is definitely good. But it would probably have to be a Google enterprise wide outage for it to matter. Google will have geo redundancy already.

Which is where the software side is so important. We had a major outage of Fastly very recently - affected a huge wodge of sites. (I know Fastly is a CDN not a data centre operator.)

Other idea: Maybe Apple are in the process of developing a new server SoC - M2S? - and will refurb their data centres with servers based on them. Resulting in both reduced energy usage and greater capacity. Thus the need to shovel some of their load onto Google while they convert.

Because Apple will not reach economy of scale that can beat Google on pricing. But Apple has the negotiation power to get ultra low cloud bills and let Azure, AWS and Google Cloud compete.

This is also a high risk and high liability endeavour.

queue the ignorant and besserwissers who have already created the picture in their minds of Sundar Pichai peeking at their valuable iCloud profile pictures :D

In that case the article was a success by the standards of MR.

No. Google definitely doesn’t have any quantum computer that comes even close to attacking crypto. For that, it’s estimated that you need around 1,000,000 full qubits.

All this, and your other comments, is unrelated to where the data is stored.

They almost certainly do, when storing them in data centers.
Apple does not encrypt mail data that resides on the server.

Not sure why anyone would complain about this, its not like Google has any access to it. Google Cloud is an enterprise service like AWS/Azure. Their are very strict privacy guidelines they must follow or they would lose all their business. Honestly, I feel much safer with my Apple data on Googles servers then Amazon or MS, Google while they might have some privacy concerns when it comes to Ads, they do know security and how to keep their infrastructure safe. Much more so then MS that's for sure!!!

In some cases, your iCloud data may be stored using third-party partners’ servers—such as Amazon Web Services or Google Cloud Platform—but these partners don’t have the keys to decrypt your data stored on their servers.

So iCloud’s IMAP data must be entirely hosted on Apple servers.

I believe it is. I see no reason why mail can’t be encrypted. It certainly should be , especially with Apple’s stance on security and privacy.

Apple does not provide third-party cloud storage providers with the keys to decrypt user data stored on their servers, ensuring a strong level of security.

Google doesn't have access to the data. What's a shame?
Google is a gargantuan powerhouse with the ability to decrypt without a key.

Only 9 pages? I'm disappointed. I guess the "walled garden" gang can't defend this lol

I wasn’t aware there is a gang out there. Anyhow, plenty data centres aren’t directly owned by those using them, Apple doesn’t even build the devices themselves, so what does that have to with the walled garden?

Lol goes on an Apple centric website to try to troll Apple lovers. Classic. And getting really old. Apple must be doing something right if people waste their lives coming here to try to bag on Apple.

Who knows how much data Apple data centers are storing. Who knows what data is being stored on AWS/Azure/Google cloud. I used to look forward to when Google announced how much total storage they had on a regular basis. I can only image the amount of data we store these days. I know my data storage has skyrocketed in the last 3 years.

And yet Apple can encrypt it with its own keys before sending them to Google and thus hiding the content from Google.

You are thinking about storing emails encrypted with keys only known to end-users.

Wrong. Apple mail is stored unencrypted on its servers, wherever they are and whomever owns them.
