I’ll stick to my original prediction that a second generation in any form won’t see the light of day.

Only way this thing sells is if it drops to £500 same as most VR headsets currently available.

It’s a basic VR headset they’re trying to ham up as something special.

Basic VR headsets can not do what the Vision Pro can do which makes it something special according to your own definition. You might not think that it differentiates itself enough to be worth the extra money and that would be a perfectly valid criticism in terms of functionality versus cost but pretending it is just a slightly different take on the Meta Quest v2 or v3 is simply not the case.

The vision pro has the _potential_ to do awesome stuff, but apple hasn't made any of these awesome apps

rather foolish prediction really. Apple has spent mega amount on a project they have released. it's part of their long term plan starting with vision pro and then glasses form. this is the way the future will head. It's sure as hell not for everybody and not for most people on current prices but if they get it at 1500 while making it more comortable and lighter then it will sell very well.

Just the two steps? Reminds me of this meme:

this is the way the future will head. It's sure as hell not for everybody

If the first statement is true, the second can't be.

and not for most people on current prices but if they get it at 1500 while making it more comortable and lighter then it will sell very well.

The Quest 3 is already vastly cheaper, a fair bit lighter and even has lots of games, yet is still a niche device. Yes, they're not entirely comparable, but they both have their strengths and common issues exist with all VR / AR devices.

That’s what you do with flops….you stop investing. They will probably see if it gets better…keep it going for the support and avoiding bad press….but all signs point to iPod HiFi (which probably sold more units lol)

They spent considerably more, in the billions, on the Apple car project that hasn't seen the light of day and internally canned.

The glasses form has already been tried, tested and failed with Google Glass. Apple isn't going to make it mainstream.

Even at £1500 it's too high for what it is. There's nothing it does that elevates it above a basic VR headset.

This seems like a pretty big deal. @Dan Barbera and @Hartley, what are your reactions (or will I have wait until the next MacRumors show?)? @Hartley, I heard in the last MacRumors show that you were going to bite the bullet and buy one once they are available in the UK. Does this change your thinking?
Nope, I'm pretty much all-in on Vision Pro. There will almost certainly be a second-generation Vision Pro. If anything, the long wait for it makes me happier to drop the considerable amount of money to buy the first generation.

The Ray-Ban Meta glasses are VERY popular. So much so that Ray-Ban and Meta are making significant increases in investments in them. So I do think that application still has a future. But anyone imagining that the tech in the Vision system will ever fit in a pair of glasses is deceiving themselves. That won’t happen. Ever.

Hard to say, but maybe. It seems to me that Apple is now in fallback mode and is shifting to a cheaper, less capable version to try and generate the buzz the wanted initially. Should the cheaper version of Vision NOT catch on in a big way (bigger than Quest) the prospect of a Vision Pro II is likely to recede into the distance very quickly.

As someone who owns Quest 3 and the AVP, there is a significant difference between the two. I can use AVP as a personal movie screen, but not Quest. Quest 3 is very good for fitness, but AVP is too heavy for that. Can't say anything about gaming, but I imagine both will be good at that. The main issue with AVP is still the lack of proper apps and lack of the content that takes advantage of the fantastic capabilities of the device. Whatever Apple did with MLS soccer immersive footage is breathtaking and point to the future of sports broadcasting.

In a way, it's much easier to quietly can a project that hasn't gone public yet than one that's already launched internationally to big fanfare.

The V1 might be a commercial flop but apple have enough money to keep throwing at it until it succeeds.

It will never succeed. Thats not just directed at Apple either.

$1600 is still too expensive. Make it $800 and I'll consider it, so long as it's focused on gaming and as lightweight as possible. Otherwise, no thanks.

As long as there's no way to use it with my existing flight/racing sim hardware, and there's no new QTVR... even that's more than I'd be willing to spend on it?

Apple dropped the ball not allowing it to be used as a PC monitor for high-end sim hardware users. That market has people that don't bat an eye paying hundreds of dollars for a steering wheel, and more to add customizable buttons to this wheels.. never mind pedal sets, control boxes, race seats, etc...

Use the AVP for sim use for a few hours, then (because it'd still be fully charged having been plugged into a PC) sit back and watch your favorite movie on the couch..

The AVP needs to have more use cases for home users than just streaming or using Word on their face...

This is me ^^

I know Apple is used to "doing it their own way", but it's a huge mistake to not make their hardware useful for those of us already very interested in this space and also those who are, to your point, somewhat price insensitive if the experience is fantastic

A "locked to only Apple usages" $3500 VR HMD is such an incredible non starter to me -- it's just too inflexible and lacking in usefulness for that price (honestly at most any price)

good, very few consumers/individuals need this type of device. this is an appliance for education, creatives, entertainment (games/etc). but these headsets have hardly ever took off be it the 90s or now. very niche, albeit cool tech.

The timing of Vision Pro is bad
-Metaverse hype has died
-Covid is over and people are spending more time outside
-Zero interest rate period is over, making credit expensive
-Rents and mortgage repayments have shot up £200-800/month for some
-Food and consumer goods are 20-30% more expensive than 5 years ago
