They be far better to broadcast college football rights than professional football IMHO given Apple existing ties to education in the USA. There are a lot of other sports that they should stream instead of these major sport franchise
Man, that is an even bigger quagmire with a lot more moving parts and even more hands in the till. They would be better off just buying the whole NCAA lock, stock, and barrel

I’m going to catch some hate on this….

I get the NFL is the most popular sport here in the US, but Apple would have succeeded in getting more subscriptions by going after UEFA. After all, Fútbol (Soccer) is the world’s most popular sport.

And let’s face it, the NFL won’t bend down and loosen its restrictions.

This is the first thing I've heard Apple having interest in that might actually get me to subscribe to a TV+ package

It's because the provider pays BILLIONS for the access.

Basically... the NFL makes more money from a provider like DirecTV or Apple than they ever would selling subscriptions to individual viewers.

At least that's what I've heard.
How much do they get from CBS, NBC, Fox, Disney and Amazon for current broadcasting rights? I assume it’s an obscene amount of money.

It doesn't revolve around NFL either - that's a pretty regional sport. Thus, Apple getting global rights might be possible as the rest of world doesn't really care.
I was recently in London and attended an NFL game. The stadium was full. American football absolutely is popular outside of the United States.

Yeah but if you are talking about worldwide rights to show the Champions League you would be talking mind boggling sums.

Here in the UK Amazon will be sharing the UK TV rights from next season with the primary rights holder BT Sport, it has cost them £1.5 billion to share the rights.

I was thinking of the rights to broadcast particular NCAA divisions, but then again some of the cable/broadcaster companies have existing deals that would take years to work around.

Yep... the NFL gets tons of money from broadcasting, too.

So that's two sources of revenue for the NFL... DirecTV Sunday Ticket... and the other broadcast channels.

I don't see why the NFL couldn't switch from DirecTV to Apple if Apple is willing to pay. Money is money.

The issue seems to be Apple wanting more flexibility: all games everywhere.

Currently... NFL Sunday Ticket is only for out-of-market games. So if you live in a certain market you won't be able to watch your home team on NFL Sunday ticket.

That's probably what Apple is trying to fix. And the NFL isn't happy.

Exactly what I thought. Sports always spike the cost of streaming.

I think this package would be so costly to Apple that it would have to be it’s own add-on and not included in TV+ by default.

That would be better anyhow, as not all are into NFL and wanting to pay for it.

That's what a lot of people did: "I don't watch sports, so I'll get rid of cable/sat because it forces me to pay for ESPN, SEC and other sports nets that I'll never watch."

I semi agree with that. If I could get a non sports package, the price would plummet, but no one will ever offer that

The NFL is so much bigger than Apple.

Sorry Tim if you can’t control the nfl then don’t buy it.
Collectively, the value of NFL franchises, including team-related businesses and real estate held by owners, is $132 billion. The Dallas Cowboys are the most valuable franchise in football and across all of sports at $7.64 billion, $630 million ahead of MLB's Yankees. (Aug 1 2022)
