Yeah but Samsung sells a whole lot more than just consumer electronics. They practically have their hands in every industry these days.

$8.5B profit was for Samsung Electronics Co. This includes semiconductors (RAM, flash memory etc.), consumer electronics, computers, mobile and displays (OLED ones, I am not sure about LCD because those now are a separate subsidiary). I am not sure if appliances (washers etc.) are included. Heavy industry, autos, chemicals etc. are not included in this number.

Help me understand this. iPhone sales are up, but profits are down. How is this good news? I understand that the stocks is dead cheap and the company is generally in a very good shape, no competition in sight. Still this earnings report doesn't strike me as a positive surprise. Maybe investors really thought Apple was doomed and are now shocked it's still alive and making money?

Too lazy to go track down the numbers right now but it was said in October 2011 and that it would be # 110 on the Fortune 500. No way has it fallen out of the F500.

Gotcha. I ran some of my own numbers based on Apple's Mac sales figure for the quarter of 3.75M and an estimated average cost of a Mac at around $1600 and it came to be about $6B in revenue. Let's say they have a 23% profit margin, it comes to $1.3B in profit. They're probably not making as much two years ago but $1.3B in profit for the quarter isn't bad.

It may have fallen a few notches but still in the 500.

Mac is only 14% of Apple. No wonder it can't make headway in worldwide PC market.

The worldwide PC market is tanking faster than a whale turd headed to the bottom of the sea. The Mac is the only PC selling anywhere. Its share is growing compared to the market. What made you say something that inaccurate and misleading?

Really? I'm embarrassed that you even asked such a question. Since when do knee-jerk stock market reactions have anything to do with a thorough reading of the numbers?

But normally knee jerk reactions are negative not positive.

But I thought Wall Street was obsessed with market share and Apple was doomed because Android was cleaning their clock in market share.

This. If Apple nails it with the plastic iPhone, things could get pretty sweet for Apple.

I, for one, do not want to see a plastic iPhone that would dilute the brand. And making a plastic iPhone wouldn't affect the price by very much. The case is a minor expense. No, a cheap iPhone would sacrifice specs, features, memory, and functionality. I don't want Apple to change direction and head to the bottom of the barrel. We already have enough cheap crap pretending to be worth something.

For those discussing the bounce in AAPL despite the loss in revenue, this is Wall Street after all and nothing ever makes sense on the street.

I particularly like Amazon's 3,200+ P/E ratio, versus Apple's 9.x

It's all about growth. Amazon sales grow whilst Apple's are not. Big decrease in profits YoY and lower than expected guidance for fourth quarter means that APPL is going nowhere (if anything it can fall lower)

Depends if you think a 21.6% decline in profit is doomed?

In my book you're only doomed of you are losing money. Apple is making money hand over fist. A decline in profit means you are making money, just not as much as you did last time.

only 6.9?

what will they do with all that profit? I know the analysts don't believe it. They are right now at this moment trying to figure out how to put apple in the worst light so the stock prices go down and the manipulators can get richer by buying cheap.

Don't start making sense now. Unless you grow exponentially nonstop till the end of time, you're doomed.

Of course, the thing that the naysayers don't realize is that by that ridiculous logic, apple is less doomed than any company in existence...

It still does. Apple did much better than expected in US and Japan. iPhone gets crashed by Android in Asia and Europe. And good sales in US to a great extend is a result of the good iPhone sales two years ago. Many of those (non-retina) people became eligible for upgrade this quarter. That's probably not going to happen again since the technology has matured and people do not feel compelled to upgrade in waves like this.

Are you sure this is what's going on? APPL is up in after hours. Perhaps "analysts" are pumping up the stock to short it tomorrow and make money when it falls below $400?

Apple is slowly reaching maximum market penetration for all products it makes worldwide. You can see that if you look at profits minus an iphone and mac pro update they are looking amazing considering premium products are really under extreme pressure with world wide 'hard times'.

I think the stock is still over inflated and doesn't reflect the real value.

Who is still buying the iPhone? It would be interesting if they broke sales down by country.

Seems in Canada, less and less people are opting for the iPhone.

However, Apple must be selling them somewhere.

According to WSJ, it's all USA and Japan.

There, that's my mistake. I expected stock market to react sanely. Silly me.

You are making my mistake. It can rise and probably will rise. The market saw the decrease in profits and did not care. You shouldn't care as well, if you want to predict the market.

No major plunge in stock price over the last six months means return of confidence and increased possibility of starting a new rally. Stock price will slowly start to explode during the next month. Think of P/E ratios over 12.
