Good news for Apple but this begs some SERIOUS questions...

With all of these resources why can't they

A) Fix the audio problems on the Mac Pro 2009, which cause the machine to overheat when just playing an mp3?

B) Produce a decent iMac, in any form.

C) Fix their mid 09 MacBook Pros so that you can put in a larger third party drive without rendering the machine unusable?

This means all of their machines (aside from the mini, but who wants that rip job?) have major MAJOR problems...yet they make a killing off all of them. I know I have been affected by 2 of these 3 problems, and they are absolute disasters for me. Majorly affecting how I can work.

I have seen it argued on here that Apple is some benevolent company out to improve the world, but I think it's clear where their priorities lie. Profits, profits and more profits. They aren't making a quality product anymore. A flashy one, yes. And that is why they can make the obscene margins they do, but I can't imagine that they aren't peaking right now and in the next few years will start a downward slide unless they improve the reliability and functionality of their products. Unless of course people keep falling for the top shelf marketing.

Some of you guys don't realize that Apple is just as "evil" if not more so than Microsoft. They are screwing you and you guys are applauding them for it!

Too bad Apple doesn't have something to bring us this quarter to keep ridin' that wave...oh wait I just remembered. I heard something the other day....:p

"The new products we are planning to release this year are very strong, starting this week with a major new product that we're really excited about."

Products, plural and "new". So we should expect more than one new, not just updated, product released this year. That's exciting.

umm A ya I can see as a problem but B and C is a personal preference not a issue..... iMac is perfectly fine to me and personally 500GB harddrive in my MBP is plenty big.. Thats why If I need bigger i buy an external hdd

AAPL down 2.2% afterhours trading... WTF

Not true.
Most people measure market share by UNITS.
Thanks to the bazillion netbooks that are flooding the market, Apple's market share most likely went DOWN.

Absolutely right, Apple will probably decrease in market share. Not that I think that'll be bothering them too much, somehow they've managed to establish themselves as THE premium brand in computing, no-one else seems to be able to come close to breaking into that sector and it means they can avoid the race to the bottom that's already hurting so many PC makers. Of course that'll be overlooked by some (winsupersite a prime example) to claim Apple are dooooomed and utterly irrelevant to the PC industry. In terms of units sold maybe, in terms of revenue.. hmm.

Also, was just thinking about this, it's a pretty brave move by Apple to put their first big launch event of the year just two days after an earnings report. If the news hadn't been good (and the event is booked at least a few weeks before hand, right?) that would have overshadowed whatever they were going to do. Now though... yikes, talk about having a nice platform to launch a new device.

Kick some asz! It's perceivable that Apple will have a higher market cap than MS this decade.

Who would've thought that, HUH? Now again: WHERE ARE THE GENIUSES that keep on disagreeing with me when I say MS IS DEFUNCT? The BEST quarter in Apple's history without even launching the world-changing tablet, a device that is gonna reinvent the whole media/press market.

Apple is the biggest, most successful, most enviable, most innovative and most profitable IT company in the world. Thank you, SJ, for providing us with the BEST personal computers, the BEST OS, the BEST smartphones, the BEST tablet and the BEST media players in the globe!

In summary, Apple will be able to shut MS down in less than 5 years and dispose of its putrid remains with little fanfare...

MS IS DEAD, BURIED, ROTTEN. FOR REAL.

So we get confirmation, but we pretty much had taken that as a given. What I see about the quote that interests me is the following word.....

products
Yeah, except I think "product" includes speed bumps while "major new product" (singular) means, well, whatever we see Wednesday..

"The new products we are planning to release this year are very strong, starting this week with a major new product that we're really excited about."

proof.

Now what could this new product that steve mentioned be?

Yes I was actually thinking exactly the same. This must be something big then :D

How so? I'm not getting screwed. My iMac works perfectly. Very happy here. I'm applauding because every time they put something out, my life gets easier.

If you have the recent release of the iMac, then no it doesn't work perfectly. You may be satisfied, but you over paid a great deal for a machine with some serious defects in it.

Every Apple machine produced today currently has ridiculous problems that no one would stand for on the PC side, but for some reason we Apple users do.

Oh great, another smashing quarter for Apple (despite the recession). And you know what great Apple earnings news means: stock selloff! :(

I'll never understand AAPL and some of the knuckleheads that trade it (and force the wildly-fluctuating valuations). I'm just holding onto mine long term and trying not to pay attention to how wild the ride is (note: impossible).

Its now up 4% lol Go figure

Sh*t.. Incredible performance. Kudos Apple!

Thurrott's in his own RDF...

From the linked Paul Thurrott article...

"As always, history serves as a guide. When Apple entered the MP3 player market with the iPod almost a decade ago, it created a high-end, expensive, and Mac-exclusive player that bombed. But when Apple opened up the iPod--and iTunes--to the PC, opened the iTunes Store, and lowered prices again and again and again, suddenly, the iPod surged. It started as an affordable luxury and turned into a commodity over time, racking up millions in sales."

No doubt that cross-platform compatibility opened up a much wider audience for the iPod and the iPod/iTunes eco-system, but to claim that the original Mac-exclusive player "bombed" is kind of ludicrous...

Ummmmmm...Apple is not an IT company. You might want to research terminology a bit before you parade here with your pom poms.

Some of you guys don't realize that Apple is just as "evil" if not more so than Microsoft. They are screwing you and you guys are applauding them for it!

And some of you guys (ok, just you) don't recognize that EVERY COMPANY IN THE WORLD has some problems with their products.

You can't sell millions of machines without some things going wrong, somewhere.

I'm sorry you've had bad luck. I'm also not sure how you've been so unlucky in trying to get Apple to fix or exchange your machines for you. But you're just playing dumb by pretending that ALL iMacs have problems. The facts (as well as other posters) clearly disagree with you.

P.R.O.O.F. :apple: is going to give us serious L.O.V.E

products

2009 products all seemed to just be updates (Snow Leopard, 3GS, iPod nano w/ Camera, iPod touch 50% faster, but all the same form factor) I'm ready for New Products. oh, the only product that I can think of that had a major form factor change last year was the Shuffle and Magic Mouse (White MacBook and iMac changed slightly, but not Major)

So what is wrong with the current iMac then?
