Wow even with the introduction of a new iPad (Pro), tablet sales are still down.
The tablet market as a whole is on the decline. Nothing that Apple does is going to prevent iPad sales declining. However the iPad is still the best selling tablet model and Apple sell more tablets than any other manufacturer.

I'm quite sad that Apple did so well. Honestly I was hoping people would punish them for their idiotic decision to keep the base model shafted with 16GB for a fifth year running, while practically every other phone maker is doing 32GB. I guess people are just too stupid to notice.

It is quite pleasing to see iPad sales continue to drop. Seriously, a 16GB tablet without a microsd slot is essentially useless. There is absolutely no reason Apple should still be selling a 16GB tablet in the year 2016. Unbelievable.

I know many people that are more than content with the 16G iPhone. I still have a 16G 5s. I offload pictures and videos to my Photos app and I use Apple Music. Never have a.space issue.

Same, I'm actually gonna get a space grey nano soon to upgrade from my 4th gen which is still going. Only reason i kept it around is because my car's entertainment system uses a 30pin connector.
I bought one a few months ago and love it. Such a simple little device. If only it had 32GB.

Changed your argument now then? You asked how are they a one trick pony, I told you, and now your going on about analysts being happy?
Last time I looked analysts weren't major share holders?

I was trying to make the point that they have a lot of successful products. They didn't just give up on everything else and milk the iPhone cash cow.

If the iPhone wasn't as phenomenally successful they'd have 5 hardware products and a great level of profitability. It just so happens the iPhone *is* insanely successful - but this shouldn't diminish the other products just because they look small from a relative point of view.

Put another way... if you just set aside the profits in this report, the company is really in bad shape!

Even if you discard the iPhone, the company is in great shape. It's revenue is up there with Google and Microsoft's.

Only in some alternate reality. Look at the chart at the top of this thread. If you look at the trend from '12 to '13 to '14, you see steady growth each year, but not a fantasy-land line approaching the vertical.

In the earnings call Cook said he expects iPhone units to drop this next quarter, year over year. That's exactly what investors are worried about, not some straw man fantasy-land expectations.

But but but... I thought iPhone sales were supposed to be DOWN and that part of their business was slowing...

Lol, I'm loving this.

Funnily enough the BBC News is running a feature this evening asking the question - has the iPhone finally peaked. I have set it to record so will watch it tomorrow.

everyone in my family unfortunately and it is so annoying. they buy their kids brand new BMWs but arent willing to fork out 1€ a month for iCloud space. lost cause :D

Okay. You remove their 'one trick' and they're still making more profit than Google. Are they just… printing money?
Because halo?
To be clear, Apple's iPhone business isn't going anywhere. But I think the basis for the one-product complaint is speculation that, without iPhone, Apple's other businesses would suffer. In this imagined world without iPhone, does iTunes matter? Apple Watch? Mac itself?
To separate iPhone from Apple's portfolio (but seriously - how would that even happen?) probably would have a very detrimental effect on everything else Apple sells.

For those wondering why the stock is down, here are iPhone sales every Q1 for the past several years:

2010: 8.7m
2011: 16.24m
2012: 37m
2013: 47.8m
2014: 51m
2015: 74.5m
2016: 74.8m

The iPhone 7 should do a lot better, but I wouldn't be surprised to see iPhone 7s Q1 sales down from the 6s.

Just shows that Apple would be almost nothing without their iPhone line. iPad sales are down, no one is buying the watch (yet) and iPods are even more obsolete.
This is true. If Apple decided not to make iPhones any more, they'd really be doomed. As an AAPL investor, I hope Apple doesn't suddenly abandon the iPhone business. I stay up at night worrying about it.

Results came in just about as expected. Neither good or bad which is positive news. Once the peak is reached the slide downhill begins. Apple's well positioned to mitigate the decline, they'll have plenty of time to create the next successful product if they don't spread themselves too thin.

Time used wisely is the key to Apple's future success. As big and exciting as the car project is, that's a huge mistake. They will not be able to command the fat profit margins they're used to. The liability is high, their just not experienced enough to face up to the realities of that industry. They need to do what they do best in the tech sector.

In my usage patterns over the years I realized that 16Gb on the nanon is fine for me, as the device is merely to store my 2 playlists (recently added, recently played) and a selection of 15-20 favorite albums/artists. I usually have 1-2GB free after this sync. The device is only for the gym and for music in the car.

Interesting that the stock kept on sliding as the call progressed. Apple got some hardball questions, but I didn't see any responses that explain the slide.

I can save you some time...

The BBC have already decided the answer to that question and they will attempt to justify their flawed "logic"

Maybe the full effect of the call sank in. It was a pretty gloomy call with no real indication of anything new to look forward to in '16.

It's funny that one of the most positive things about the quarter was probably Watch sales. Of course Apple didn't provide sales figures but their commentary indicated a very good quarter.
