Should not be shocking at all.

Nvidia has been having hardware chipsets used within Audi's own MMI systems (coded using BlackBerry's QNX interconnects) for over a decade. Where have you been?

NVidia Tegra chipset ... you recall this right?

Planned since 2017.

NVidia does NOT rest on their laurels or burn through cashflow needlessly or wastefully or tastelessly
An infotainment system is very different from a powertrain module, let alone an autonomous driving platform.

This post shows EXACTLY what people shouldn’t do with a single data point they know nothing about.

Maybe we shouldn’t take one graph and decide we know all there is to know about Apple’s autonomous vehicle program, or anyone else’s.

potentially you maybe right.

Apple has been at this for quite some time and there is no product/service to show for it. No comfort of announcements and even when directly asked Apple seemingly avoids the question very differently then avoiding about working on a phone, or tablet, or using Intel chips, etc.

BTW this is a very BIG data point and a very telling chart; we don't know if the AI was relinquished specific control or relinquished control at a pre-set certain interval ... yet why? For me I've asked how does making a car work into Apple on a global scale? I have a feeling it's about maps or integrating with existing autonomous driving vs building a car entirely even with a partnership.

Autonomous driving platform first starts with a good chipset/system along with internet connectivity and rapid mapping system before that driving platform begins to engage the drivetrain. Powertrain IS what's being done by Nvidia ... they've been working to circumvent QNX low level systems - which is the powertrain you're speaking.

Have a deeper look into what they're doing and their partnership with Audi, it's much more than an MMI (or 'infotainment system').

Cheers.

How can you trust Apple when it comes to software, let alone letting Apple write the software for self driving cars? Apple always, and I mean always, delivers products with bugs and glitches, and them doing self driving is dangerous. Apple has a long way to go to even consider making this public. I think they should just put their efforts on something else.

Considering that Apple has made a mess out of iCloud, Maps, and Siri it's no surprise that they make a terrible driverless car. Driverless cars are an enormous technical challenge, and there is zero room for error. I doubt a clown like Eddy Cue or whoever is running their software/AI initiatives has anywhere near the know-how to do this properly.

I barely trust Apple to manage my music library at this point. There's no way in hell I'd let them drive my car.

It’s apple’s massive profit margin causing all of the disconnects so taking that into consideration apple actually has far less disconnects than the article suggests. That makes this clickbait done by apple haters.

If the ANN powering Apple's self-driving car is anything like Siri's, I can't exactly say I'm surprised. Those two could make a lethal combination.

These knocks on Siri are getting tiring. She works great in our household.

And this ANN name? Is that official? First time I've heard it. What does it stand for?

so, i guess Apple Cars is not rumors anymore.

Clarification is needed. Originally, the rumours were that Apple was building an actual "car". But now it seems that Apple is merely focused on the self-driving software (and possibly counterpart hardware), but not a full car. I think that's smart. We don't need Apple distracted by building cars. It's a mature market.

I'm not shocked by this rating. It's still early in Apple's work on this. Just look at how "poorly" many other familiar names are performing? Apple is not alone.

Their software and services offerings have been lackluster for years. AI, especially in critical areas like self driving cars is not easy. I have doubts that Apple can deliver anything meaningful and competitive based on my knowledge of how they are operating in other areas.

I don't even use a reverse camera or blindspot monitoring, nothing bets having the actual skills to drive properly yourself!
Can't agree with you here. Autonomous cars WILL replace human drivers... computers don't get tired, or drunk, or distracted, and they can process information vastly faster and more efficiently than humans can. Now, they are not perfect, so crashes with still happen, but far less frequently than they do now.

First self-driving will be a novelty that isn't even legal without the driver being ready and able to take the wheel. Then it will be purely optional. Finally, when it's conclusively demonstrated that computers have surpassed humans in terms of safety, it will be mandatory. Probably decades away from that last one, but it will happen.

The numbers are self-reported, and the two leading companies are a Google subsidiary and General Motors. Sounds like a future congressional hearing to me.

Anything to do with AI Apple don't seem to be very good at. What a shame. Does anyone know why they suck so much? I mean I know SIRI isn't as good at certain things that Google's Home devices/Assistant is good at. As I understand it its because of the amount of private data Google collect Vs Apple's more private way of collecting data, although, I don't understand the complexity of these things. I really do desire for Apple to do well, however :(

its BS..they are doing it wrong...apple never fails. They are working on a better product and it takes time. just like AirPower..patience..

Sweet. This ought to give me an extra decade to save up for an Apple Car.

In all seriousness though, is this surprising? Apple has completely given up their massive lead in AI circa 2011 to chase iPhone profits that are now on the decline. Show of hands: Who in the forums would let Siri drive them somewhere? That’s what I thought. The look of horror on all of your faces right now speaks volumes. It’s going to be a very long time.

I think the only way they will catch up is with killer hardware—aka a sweet ride—that has a lot of creature comforts and tech packed in. Apple should just buy Tesla and a few smaller self driving startups and give this project a kick in the rear. Google was smart to form Alphabet so that they can have all these different companies that can share technology and operate somewhat independently.

AirPower? I have been using Qi wireless charger with my iPhone X for a good while. What is taking them so long to deliver AirPower and what is perfection there. It will be interesting to see what more added value I get Mar 22nd, I guess. Unless I missed your sarcasm ;-)

I'd like to see the "How many humans we've maimed or murdered per 1,000 miles" statistic.

No doubt. One wonders how much cheating goes on in this reporting/operating. For example, Uber got much less disengagement by removing safety restrictions that caused a lady to be hit and killed.

Maybe it's just a matter of the more honest, careful companies being at one end of that chart, showing AI-vehicles in a more realistic light?
