Try Powermax to see what they quote you. I got about $800 for a Rev B MacBook Air when the Rev D's came out. They were selling it for about $950 IIRC.

Did you buy your laptop as an investment piece? That would be silly.

What does that mean? Anytime a member/owner complains about the apple brand, ya'll are a bit condescending

Look, I'll buy the new macbook pro 17" - just need to get rid of this one or else I'll have two 17" which is a total WTF.

No one is being rude; we're just a little baffled you don't get how trading something into a dealer will always get you a lower price than if you sold it to an end-user directly.

It saves you time and effort but you get a lower price because the dealer then does that work for you. Expecting full resale value on a trade-in is the WTF.

No one buy's evolving technology as investments outside of company stock. Pay 1000.00 today, sell for 200.00 tomorrow. The minute something faster and cheaper is out your resell just nosedives.

On a side note:
I joined this site BECAUSE the users are condescending.

You can get a lot of money for yours trust me. If you don't want the hassle of e-bay try amazon. That is the easiest place to sell something. they take more than e-bay but you will still see over 1200 after all is said and done. don't even bother with these re-sellers they are worse than used car salesmen. No offense to any used car salesmen in this forum.

Trade in is the same as re-sale. Except this store calls it a trade in so you have to buy a new device from them with your store credit.

I'm not knocking on Apple gear because I have sold some in the past and I posted this just to say how does some of these apple dealers lowball you so bad, it's just the same way used car dealership do.

Sorry, but you're terribly wrong. Re-sale in no way is the same as trade in.

In a re-sale you sell the good to an end user, without the intervention of a third party, is a direct sale without any other cost involved in the transaction.

If you trade in, then you sell to a third party that then will sell the good to an end use, and there're a lot of costs involved in that operation, and they have to profit, so you will get less for what you're selling this way.

Thanks for the tips ya'll. I appreciate the input! I'm looking to score $1400 at most. That should cover hole apple will open up in me after I pay for the new 17"!

The Mac Store has to earn a profit on selling it. The entire point is they have to buy it from you for below resale. That's how they make money.

The price they are offering you is not the actual resale value of your machine.

well you are selling it to them am I not right here? What's the difference here? In fact if you look at a trade in like a car trade in you get shafted. I'm just asking for $1400 but I was very surprised to see $804. If this apple 3rd party company can lowball like this perhaps the Apple brand is really just not that valuable.

I'm going to try CL for local deals and then Ebay. The new macbook pro's are way too fast (3x) to be exact than my current setup. I'm using Esata and I could use some harry potter port for more speed when editing and encoding videos.

Used car salesmen will give you as little as possible for your vehicle too. They make a KILLING off people not knowing the 'real' market value of their vehicles. People think "oh sweet, I can get XXX for this car?" without realizing they could get more elsewhere.

My car when I traded it in was worth about $1600-1750 or so, and I originally got offered $1,000 in trade-in for it. Even after I hardballed the dealership and they gave me $1,500 I probably still could have netted more from a private sale (dealership listed the car for sale at $1999).

Computers are no different.

No condescention here, but your thread title was a bit of an unfair judgement based on one quote from a reseller...

A trade-in value is always going to be significantly lower than a private resale value, because you're selling to a middleman who plans on making a profit. If you want maximum money for any computer, sell it direct via ebay, amazon, cragslist etc as others have suggested. No middleman, more money for you.

I agree I would stay away from trade-in in stores (who will always get your Mac under market value to sell at a profit) and simply sell directly in an auction site like eBay or Amazon.

I'm not knocking on Apple gear...

LOL!

I'll just say that Apple branded hardware is the biggest rip off on the planet. Not only do you lose all your money the brand image isn't worth jack.

You're back pedaling now because everyone here just pwned your arse.

As if *that* outfit is the Kelly BlueBook of mac hardware.

To the OP: I get what you are saying about the value of your computer. Like others have said you could most likely get quite a bit more than the trade-in is offering if you are willing to invest the time by listing the computer on ebay or amazon. But you really can't blame the mac trade-in program. After all they are a business, and like any business, their sole purpose is to make a profit. They can't make a profit if they turn around and sale your mac for no profit or even a loss. In other words there would be nothing in it for them.

That's the dumbest statement I've ever read. You use the same logic when you want to buy a new car from a dealer only to discover that trade-in value is less than you hoped? Private party will always trump trade-in.... dealers, car or computer, need to make a profit off of their trades.

I almost sold my 2010 15in i5 yesterday for 1800 but, i had to hassle with my Mom not understanding the idea of paying the difference, with in hours of the news break it is now 1550. Im keeping my baby! :D

I'm getting a 2nd 17 inch...not WTF.....it's total WIN!

Dude - wtf gives? backpedaling what? I have owned several apple laptops and about to get the latest and greatest. I'd be pwned if I gave into the $804 buy back!

Watch out for eBay fees and paypal fees :)

If he lists it on ebay as an auction the max take out is 50 bucks paypal is 3 percent . he should list it on auction for 1200 to 1400

these are usa fees. the listing fee is under 5 dollars. so if it sells for 1200 he would pay about 80 or 90 in fees. collecting 1110 shipping may be 50 bucks. still 1060 is better then 804. it may go higher the 1200. I have found selling macbook pros to be more difficult then mac minis on ebay.

Well dang thank god for apple having the "worst resale value" Not, I just sold my ipad for 400 dollars so i'll be upgrading my iPad for 99$ sounds good to me!

Why would you possibly buy another Apple when you have just expertly demonstrated how lousy they are with holding their value?

There's no point in buying a lower spec MAC than a PC with better specs for a cheaper price!

Again, if you believe what you state (and are not simply trolling), vote with your wallet and get a PC.

resale and trade-in are two different cases ... the trade-in has to be re-sold for profit ... when it is finally re-sold ... That is the resale price.

this is not even considered resale value, its buy-back/trade in value. Apple wont pay you nearly the same to take it back as someone would to buy it from you. Apple wants to get it from you as cheap as then can so they can make a profit, just like car companies and just about any other compay will. The only way to make your own profit is to sell it to someone on ebay or something.

This is comparable to selling my unversity textbooks, bought a $150 textbook, its in mint condition cause I barely used it, and the uni only offered me $20 for it...meanwhile I my friend sold the exact same textbook for $130, which is what I am doing next term.
