Wonder if it would affect heat dissipation/thermals. The reason many bigger pro camera lenses are beige/white rather than black is precisely because of this.

Long live this wonderful Black MacBook that I had... running Mac OS X Tiger 10.4!
I loved mine, but man it ran hot! If I recall correctly this was the MacBook for which I repurposed a bamboo cutting board to keep it from roasting my thighs.

The ease of swapping out batteries and hard drives was really a treat, though.

I did not know this! It does make sense that thermal expansion of the lens body would wreak havoc with the optics.

But given how little heat these new Apple Silicon chips apparently put out, I suspect heat dissipation will be less and less of a factor in Apple laptop design as time goes on.

This is the kind of thing I love about Apple. They’re even making sure they get black right. And the answer is none. None more black.

they have to do something like offer a new color to sell these ARM processor Macs with limited RAM

Downside to black is sunlight may overcook the device (battery, CPU) and could even make it too hot to touch. Large temperature swings can also cause warping or loosening of connectors.
Now ya just hating or flaming my good looks ... me I'm always too hot to touch in the sun ;)
This of that on the matte black MBP as a security feature ;) lol.

The coating could have some flecks to reflect the light and could dissipate heat better than regular paint anodizing. I don't recall the polycarbonate MacBooks having any heat issue in the sun.

I usually take the darkest finish apple offers for a given product, but I’m good with the space gray they have on the current MacBooks. I’d be happy to see the option for those who want it, but this doesn’t look as good as the space grey IMO.
What doesn't? Apple hasn't released anything with this finish yet.

And with this, the circle of life from my first laptop ever, the black Wallstreet, would be complete.

* joins hands together in hushed prayer sign*

If that’s ever released I’ll buy it immediately. That’s the color I’ve wanted since the original “BlackBook” was out

I used to have one of the Powerbook 3400c. It died in a horrible accident. I dropped it when entering my office once. I still feel the pain I felt that day.View attachment 1686754

My first laptop ever! I was REALLY impressed since it was able to drive an external 11" LCD screen running the MacOS 7.1 !! without any third party software, drivers and no internet connection to speak of and THIS was early 2001 when LCD's were just starting to show up a very expensive units to purchase vs CRT monitors!

Silver to me is the only color all MacBooks should be. After all, the original aluminum MacBooks have been silver since the beginning of time and they've been an Apple icon ever since. Fast forward to today where they're offering multiple colors which IMO is making these MacBooks look more like toys than actual Apple icons.
Something isn't an 'icon' just because it's the only choice. So many people say that with AirPods/EarPods etc. Something is an icon not just for it's design or presence or sleek essence it's cause it does all of this despite other options.

Apple Portable's - first portable Apple computers were white / ugly beige.
Apple's real laptops - all a shade of grey.
Apple's PowerBook lineup was all black or very dark grey - UNTIL the PowerBook G4 Titanium which was a 2-Tone ... THAT was an icon laptop - because it went against the existing model's not only what Apple had but the entire industry and delivery sleekness ('it has the sex' and 'the power) and incredible performance beyond all competitors.

TiBook G4 as it was nicknamed, that was an icon.
20TH Anniversary Mac - the TAM - THAT was an icon because it was THE smallest Mac or desktop computer for over 15yrs and first to ship with a trackpad and an LCD and speakers and sub-woofer. Jobs loved the design yet said nothing publicly because it represented engineers from an era he wasn't at the helm of Apple yet was announced as an honour product upon his return.

“The new black colour is a deep black not a dark grey like traditional black laptops”

Macrumours: Here’s a picture of a dark grey laptop
Yep, picture shown is far from what’s talked about in the article and patent application.
