In Canada, you can't just "go inside", life doesn't stand still for -40, I live in a region that had 3 weeks of -40 weather, I can't just go inside, I still have to buy groceries, go to school, have a life.
-40 stops for noone
I've been to Canada in the middle of winter, and yes it is cold. But when I did my grocery shopping there, they had these buildings called 'supermarkets' where all the food and stuff was. Schools were buildings too. The kids would go 'inside' these buildings. People would go 'inside' the supermarkets. I'm not sure what your town is like, but to live somewhere where the grocery stores and schools are outside is a real shame.

I don't have an iphone (yet!), but if it is anything like a regular cellphone. good luck getting a signal inside of a building. even in a large city, if I walk into a wal-mart, grocery store, or some large office building my signal drops.

Maybe it is just sprint? but I hate having to walk outside to use the phone.

Not an original idea. Gloves were being used to remotely control musical keyboards back in 1989/90. It was the guys in Marillion (working with a tech guy from Kingston On Thames) who were doing it so that the new lead singer could play some of the keyboard parts of their songs while moving round the stage at the same time. http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=lWfTwEdSzwg for evidence...;)

Ah im jealous. I have so much trouble controlling my iphone when im snowboarding:(.
Aww, amen. :(

It's not "while" you're snowboarding, but when you're on the hills. You get a phone call you basically have to strip if you want to answer it. Though, I sometimes manage to use my nose. :p

Minority Report ...?

Good golly.

It's just an application for types of gloves for using capacitive touchscreens in the cold. That's ALL. Other companies have such things in production already.

As for Minority Report gestures, they had to pause filming quite often because Tom Cruise's arms would get so tired from being held up, doing take after take. In real life, a mouse or desk touchpad would be much easier... assuming you actually had a similar job.

Ok, is there ANYONE, anyone at all in this thread that read the whole article and understands that this to AID the use of multi touch devices in the winter.....not some kind of Apple Powerglove?

Sill peeples

But, but, what if you live in a hot climate? Or don't want to channel MJ?

Then... don't buy them?

Living in a colder climate, I've wondered who would be the 1st to offer touch-friendly gloves. I assumed it would be a 3rd party but prefer an Apple offering, any day.
That said, I can't see this coming from Apple. I mean, of all of the possible apparel opportunities from them, this would seem a bizarre debut.

But anything is possible, I suppose.

I have those North Face gloves. They work great with my iPhone and are actually really warm. I LOVE em!

These?

This is the exact scenario I struggle with: using the device on the slopes.
Ha! Nose = genius.

Buy a pair of scissors and cut fingertips off gloves - problem solved :)

Hi,

You're from Texas. What would you know about winter gloves? :)

If I cut the finger tips off my gloves in our current Canadian weather,
I'd loose all my fingers in 15 minutes.

Mr. New Zealander who lives at the opposite end of the world, do you have any idea about what daily life is like in Canada?

Do you think we have a network of heated tunnels connecting all the buildings (well there is one in downtown Toronto but most of us don't don't live there and I rarely even visit it)? Do you think that students have magic heated busses that show up right in front of their homes whenever they want? Do you think that public transport is readily available to those who live in the middle of nowhere?

Yes schools & supermarkets are indoor but did you know that even the cityfolk (who don't have cars or are high school students) have to walk almost a kilometre to a bus stop, wait up up to half an hour for a bus in the cold, take a long ride in a bus where the door keeps on opening every minute or so, and then walk another kilometre to their destination. And then we people of the Great White North like to go outside and have a life too.

P.S. My hands feel cold even in those really thick & bulky gloves. Even in the countryside of Southern Ontario (-10 to -25 winter) where I spend half my life, my hands may literally freeze in light gloves without fingertips.

You beat me to it - my first thought was "Minority Report" as well, but then I read a bit further... ;)

Haha, I knew at least one person would beat me to it, the very first thing I thought of was Minority Report. That would be kinda cool. Or not, considering how the movie turned out.

first of all they already mentioned these in the article, second of all, just looking at those i can tell that they'd be way too thin to actually wear c'mon, what are they, good for 10 degrees celcious or warmer?

Not to mention I think I'd want a larger finger tip surface area than those little dots. Specifically on the thumb.
I know in my experience, I tend to use the side of my thumb (more than the tip) when (say) pinching photos.

But, I have not seen these in person, let alone used them.
Surely they work as expected...

For much colder temps than Dots look capable of, several outdoor apparel manufactures (The North Face, Burton, Columbia, etc.) make low-temp mittens where the mitten part pulls back to reveal your fingers.
