Regardless I have had success with some Apple products and have had problems with others. I don't think that it is necessarily the users that causes an Apple product to go bad. Apple is making products created by humans. There are going to manufacturing defects, design flaws and the like. And things like that, Apple needs to own up to. If someone keeps having to return a product 8 times to Apple, then that is their luck with that particular product. And they can choose to go to another product.

Even with the problems and successes I have had with Apple products I will always by Apple. That is as long as they continue to keep a great policy on their product warranty and build great products that I love to use. Now if they transitioned to making lesser quality products and worst interfaces then I will leave Apple. I'm an equal opportunity employer here.
 
My experiences with Dell have ranged from 1 week to 5 months to get a problem fixed. (And the 5 month problem took up about 20 hours on the phone with them over that time.)

So good thing you've been lucky so far, I guess!

I never have had a problem with Dell support. If I had a problem, they sent someone out to fix it no questions asked. That can't be said for Apple.

But, if this lowers prices, I'm all for it. The detectors better be extremely accurate. I don't want to be blamed for something that isn't my fault. :apple:
 
Paranoid much? It doesn't make sense. If they did this then people would stop buying them.

If Apple wouldn't let me upgrade my ram or my hdd on my own I'd never buy another Apple computer and I think a lot of people would be doing the same thing. There is a line and I think they have enough sense not to cross it.

It IS what happens when people let things out of control. Just look at the USA government and the **** they’ve been pulling for the past 8 years.

Call me how you want, but see you in a few years when you complain that Apple owns your device. If there is a company that will try to cross that line, it’s Apple.
 
I have two questions to ask people:
  1. How come the vast majority of people never have an issue with their products, but then those few people that do have problem after problem after problem and get lots of replacements?
  2. If Apple did implement this system, would you still buy from Apple?
 
Apple is not limiting what you can do with your device. They are simply confining the warranty to quantifiable data of abuse (more appropriately term jailbreaking". If what you are doing is outside the warranty and you still want to do it, go head! Apple will simply not longer cover your accidentally did it on purpose to fix what ever the heck you did.
 
Newer cars have similar systems already set in place to monitor overheating/oil levels/overrevving/etc. to keep the dealerships from having to spend thousands out of pocket to replace a part that the customer abused.

I hope all companies follow suit.

This is a good point that I think is being overlooked. Most cars have had this sort of abuse detection technology in them for years. So if you are driving a car that is 10 years old or newer (depending on the manufacturer), you are already constrained by this, or even stricter, technology.

Big Picture: this is much better for Apple and its customers.
 
So what happens if you drop it but no physical damage occurs? Does it still write to the "abuse log"? If you then take it in with an unrelated problem, would Apple then blame it on you dropping the device?

I'm always wary of automated systems like this as there's lots of potential for false positives.

But it probably won't make a difference because I'm sure the same people who create the jailbreaking app will figure out how to wipe this database.

To answer #1, I haven't had problem after problem, and every time that I have needed a replacement, I have had to sick lawyers on Apple to get it.

To answer #2, I would still buy things from Apple, but I would make damn sure that everything was bought using one of my parents' (I'm only 15) American Express cards. They'll pay for a replacement even if you drop it, as long as it happens while the manufacturer's warranty is still valid.

And I won't be complaining that Apple controls my device. Maybe you're one of the suckers who accepts what Apple wants you to, but I jailbreak my phone, I hacked and modded my last cellphone, I modify my laptops, I build my desktops and hack my 360 and Wii.

Have fun complaining and writing letters! If I don't like the way someone does business, I take it elsewhere or do something about it. :D

Well then the question doesn't seem to apply to your experience. I was talking about the users that need lots of replacements. Like those on iPhone 10 when most people are still on iPhone 1. Even if 10% of the phones out there are defective, the chances of getting 9 in a row are 1/1000000000. You have a better chance of winning the lottery! So either that person is REALLY unluckly or they are liars.

Did that feel good? Are you feeling superior now?

I also jailbreak my iPhone, and I also do whatever I want with my devices. Let a few years pass, and when you have a problem with your Apple “I like control” device and you go to the Genius bar they will tell you “Sir, you jailbroke your iPhone. See ya.” And you can’t tell me a jailbreak can do any damage to an iPhone. A restore and you’re good to go.

Same here. Unfortunately there is no Android-based phone in my country yet.
 
The same way that these people got cracks in their iPhones. Cheap materials, and a defective manufacturing process.

Right now I can take my phone in and they say "did you get it wet?" and I say "Check the sensor!" and they know I'm telling the truth.

Wouldn't you like to have been able to answer the "did you crack it by dropping it?" question in the same way?

Don't get me wrong. I'm not a Dell fanboy. This was 4 years ago, and it was a company supplied laptop. So they likely purchased whatever extra coverage got me 24 hour onsite service. Dell's have horrible hardware, and you have to get that insanely stupid win-something Operating System. So they are not a viable alternative to Apple. But I will always compare my experience with the two until Apple steps up for its business customers.

I love my Apple products. The *only* issue I have with Apple is that they do not offer Business class Apple Care.

Anyway, this is way off topic, sorry for the digression.

That is my way to charge the "manofacturer abuse" after they sell me an expensive item that is gonna brake itself without any reason just days after the warranty expires.

you are forging documents to defraud a company, and you are making excuses for it. Things break down occasionally. Tha fact does not give you an excuse to commit fraud.

Just 2 weeks ago I had my 17" mac book pro besides me and it pronted me for a mac osx software update, I said yes. When finished the computer restarted and that was it. It didn't start up again. I took it to the apple store and the mother board was fried.

and you think that it was Apple who purposefully fried your computer and you are just "stickin it to the man"? Oh give me a break! You are lying to them and committing a fraud!

Did I abused it? no, I was working on my mac pro actually and had skype on the other MBP.

so you believe that that gives you the right to commit fraud?

I do not have the means to hire lowyers and suit apple and stuff, so I do what I can.

and in this case "I do what I can" means lying and defrauding.
 
This is awesome... as a guy who sells cell phones I wish more places would try to add more features like this. It does two things...

#1 it gives people that actually haven't done anything to their phone a fighting chance when something goes defective and creates visible damage. I have seen many phones come in (not iPhones mind you) that have broken LCD screens and the users claim they just flipped them shut or slid them shut. I have seen iPhones in with the user claiming they put no more than average pressure on the phone and the screen breaks. This will help those people actually get their factory warrenty.

#2 it sticks it to all those people out there who are getting free warrenty replacements for doing stupid things. There are currently ways to wreck your phone that is not noticable to store staff that are responsible for issuing a warrenty replacement.

So +1 for the honest people and -1 for the liars.... it's all good.
 
Right, just like when my iMac started to blow smoke out of the back vents. Guess what someone like you at the apple store said to me? They told me that they wouldn't replace it because I "had probably put a cigarette in my iMac." He didn't even look. So if you want to talk to me about people lying about damage, look at people like yourself.

But guess what, all was good in the end. My mom had an attorney at her office call Apple for me. I got a new iMac, and that "Genius" was out of a job.

This whole post is TOTAL BS! There are SOP and captures set in place for such occurrences. I know systems will be replaced even if OOW for such issues and mommy and her lawyers will never need to get involved. Now if you did indeed put a cig in you Mac, there are ways to see it.
