Personally I'll be waiting for Bluetooth 5 headsets before I make the leap to wireless.

I was thinking the same. I don't want to spend more than $100 on a wireless headset knowing that a few months later a new version with Bluetooth 5 will be available

So spend $20 on Bluetooth headphones. There is a plethora of excellent BT headphones at very reasonable prices. For $80 you can get a pair of LG HBS-910 which are the most convenient, multi-purpose headphones on the market. It's 2016, I can't believe anyone tech savvy enough to be on this forum is still using wired headphones, that's ridiculous.
Besides, unless you're dissatisfied with the range of current bluetooth products (which beats the length of any headphone cord hands down) there's zero reason to wait for Bluetooth 5, since all it brings outside of extended range has to do with improved data throughput, beacons, and IoT stuff. You're making a mountain out of nothing.

Wouldn't the devices you connect to also need to be Bluetooth 5 to take advantage of this? So if I hook my iPhone 7 or RMB to Bluetooth 5 wouldn't it be limited by those devices? If I won't gain anything until I replace my laptop and/or phone I can live with out Bluetooth 5 for now.

Just an honest question I have no idea if I am right or wrong.

If these were rushed out and had nothing but issues, everyone currently complaining would be furious that they shipped them before they were ready. Which do you want?

It seems the secret sauce people want is the W1 chip. However, since people have waited this long they are beginning to wonder if it is worth holding off for Bluetooth 5. This seems pretty easy to understand to me. People want their cake and be able to eat it too if possible.

It is quite a compliment to the readership of this forum that you feel we are all as savvy as you think we are. If I were much more savvy I would have probably found your remark a tad condescending.

People are happy laying down $1000 for a phone knowing that a new, better one will be available within a year.

Bunch of clowns running Apple these days. I imagine them just partying all day, completely drunk off the success Jobs provided them. That new Frankenstein Christmas ad is a joke!

I'm getting now blurs of that new Xmas party movie, with Tim Cook jumping off the 1st floor into the Xmas tree on the Apple Campus.

What a joke these wireless headphones. So much engineering staff working there and they can't figure out the basic operation of a product ? Why did they announce it in the first place ?

Soon it will be March and we'll have another round of product announcements. What a joke.

love my brand new Beats Solo 3 Wireless (W1 chip). The battery life on this set is insane. Still 71% after at least 10 hours of using them with my iPhone 7.
Turning on these Solo 3 will instantly connect to my iPhone 7. Not once a drop out, 100% solid connection all the time and the sound is good (not for audiophiles maybe).
Bought them during Black Friday at amazon.de for €192 incl shipping.

BT 5.0 won't make the secret sauce more tasty.

It was my understanding that in the W1 uses Near Field Magnetic Induction (NFMI) to bring the audio from one headset speaker to the other. So there's still a single BT connection to the phone (stereo), but NFMI transfers one channel to the other headset.

Okay, I'll bite... Bluetooth 5 has been officially launched. I am guessing that BT 5 devices are going to be coming in way less than a year. So your analogy doesn't seem to work. I think most people hold off buying $1,000 phones when there has been a press release saying that the next best thing has been announced. I know I generally don't buy an iPhone 6 the day the 7 is announced if I can avoid it.

If people have to wait for 3 more months and the Beatsx ship with last years tech people will rightfully start to think about if they may want to wait or check around what is on the market. If Apple did make this delay due to updating to BT5 people will understand. If they are delayed this long and nothing has changed you are going to hear many people demanding answers from "Timmy". Ugh saying his name that way is so creepy and cringe worthy.

Yep, but BT5 devices will be backwards compatible to a certain degree, and will work with all newer phones. But to get the most of them you need a BT5 enabled phone.

The main thing is extended reach and transfer speed it seems - not so much in the improved audio category.

So because of the W1 chip BT 5 wouldn't increase the range on these headphones?

They probably mean 2-3 months from when Apple announced them.

So the end of January and not what MacRumours are saying, February or March.

It's quite horrible to realize that the point has come where I begin to GREATLY enjoy bad news from Cupertino, but not because I wish them harm, but because this is the last thing I have any hope for to correct Apple's course: cold hard failing.

The more and faster the better.

Cause I'd really love to get back to no-brainer purchases from this company.
They are awesome when they don't suck and do all this slacking, penny pinching, etc...
They really are.

Glassed Silver:ios
Absolutely. I feel the same, not because I want to see them fail, but because I want them to wake the hell up and start being the same old Apple which makes products I can be excited about.

Courageous enough to make jokes on the internet but not courageous enough to realize that Apple already offers a slew of wireless options and this delay isn't doing any appreciable harm to anything. Sad.

Never said they didn't have other options - what I did say was they didn't have their flagship options.

The harm thing is your opinion. My opinion is if you're going to destroy a standard, you better have your **** ready and best options available to back it up.

Was just online reading various articles trying to make sense of BT5. Judging by what I quoted from the link I provided it does seem like the new Beatsx and Airpods may be able to be updated to BT5. I am finding some of the information on this thread to be slightly confusing. I have never paid much attention to BT until they took the jack off the phone. I am trying to bring myself up to speed on the topic.

So I have one basic question... Will BT5 if used in these new pods increase the range of the pods? One poster seemed to think that BT5 offers no advantages because of the W1 chip. In my case I would give up longer range because of the easier pairing. So if it is one or the other I would go with the W1 offerings. However if I can have it both it would make me think of waiting.

The same article also suggests that BT devices historically hit the market rather rapidly.

http://www.pcworld.com/article/3118...-range-bluetooth-5-to-reach-devices-soon.html

"Devices that support the latest Bluetooth and Bluetooth Low-Energy versions may be upgradeable to Bluetooth 5 via firmware. Otherwise, devices will require new chips and controllers, which are already being developed, Linley analysts said in the research note. For example, Texas Instruments' CC2640 wireless chip will support the Bluetooth 5 standard."

Sure, but next year I'll buy a new iPhone and I guess it will be Bluetooth 5 compatible.
A good headset can last years, it doesn't need frequent updates like a smartphone, so if I have to spend money on a good one I can wait a little bit and see what happens.

That's interesting, where did you read about it?
