Or option 2:

This forum has been invaded by a seriously bad wave of negativity in recent months and the critics will seize any opportunity to criticise Apple and Tim Cook, regardless of whether they have any personal stake in the issue or not.

You might be right in that these are different people, and it's honestly getting pretty tiring to go to any new topic and instantly get overwhelmed by the whole tide of negativity.

Don't the whiners here have anything better to do, or at least take the time to type out a more well thought out response?

Kinda like yelling at the kids while the house is on fire "Stop freaking out and finish your dinner!"... Apple is a premium company and should be the top of the industry in execution... between all the mis-steps one has to re-evaluate the premium... if I want poor execution I can go Lenovo (which actually may be better based on the Miix 700 I bought my GF after losing faith in Apple and the 100% price premium... and having an inferior product).

More like your kid scored 95% in a test, but all the parent can fixate on is the 5% he missed. And instead of at least rewarding him for a job well done, he is getting sent to his room without dinner to mug even harder.

Same here. Apple has delivered stellar results and released several new products and is now managing 4 different operating platforms, but everyone just chooses to gloss over that fact and instead obsess overwhelmingly over missed deadlines for 2 headphone models.

Er... Yeah, it works just fine with any of the literally THOUSANDS of bluetooth headphones available on the market. From $5 to over $1,000, with wires, with headbands, neckbands, no bands, there's a model for everyone. Yes, I'm disappointed the AirPods are not shipping yet, but for ****'s sake it's not the end of the world.
If you have to have a W1 set, get the Powerbeats 3. They're available now at the same price. Yes, they have a wire between the earbuds. No, they're not as cool. But they have a really long range. Otherwise, there's a plethora of excellent bluetooth headphones that work perfectly with the iPhone. Chill.

Apple as so easily parodied nowadays, they've only got themselves to blame.

Damn I saved my Jaybird X3's in hopes that the Beats X would drop this month. Guess I'll be using the Jaybirds then.

Prepare for people who refused to buy the iPhone 7 because of the lack of headphone jack to complain about the delay in this product because they need it with the lack of a headphone jack.

edit: I couldn't prepare you fast enough, it's already happened. Stay classy MacRumors.

I was preparing to buy the iPhone7, but skipped it because I want a headphone jack. I don't want a dongle - phone is in my pocket half the time and having a plug would catch on things. I also want to charge and use 3.5mm jack at same time - don't believe there are any MFI dongles that have both 3.5mm + power pass through.

All to fulfill some guys thin fetish.

Have a watch of the 3 adverts a few posts up POST #76 and tell me which one is the Mac and which one is the PC at this point.

The Powerbeats Wireless 2 are phenomenal. Great sound, they never fall out, and 6 hour battery life ought to be enough for most people. Also, they can be purchased for $99 now that the new ones are avail. I recommend either the Wireless 2 or the new, more expensive ones (if you must have 12 hour battery life & W1 chip).

For the life of me I cannot understand why anyone would feel they need to hold out for the Airpods, though admittedly I have several friends who are doing so. Aren't they going to fall out/get lost almost immediately??

I think you'd notice if they fall out no? Similarly to how you notice if a wired earpod falls out of your ear.

Secondly, there is a charging case which you can put the pods in when not in use. You may argue you may lose the pod, but you could also lose your iphone, your wallet, your keys etc.

Never said they didn't have other options - what I did say was they didn't have their flagship options.

The harm thing is your opinion. My opinion is if you're going to destroy a standard, you better have your **** ready and best options available to back it up.

Oh right, flagship headphones. I forgot that was a thing. I remember all those times I walk in to Best Buy and say "Excuse me, where do you keep your flagship headphones?". Or when I go to Google's or Samsung's online store and I sort their headphones from flagship to non-flagship.

I'm not sure how I forgot about that. About how when a company makes an accessory, they sell a flagship version of that accessory and a non-flagship version. Like iPhone cases. The leather iPhone case is the flagship case and the rubber one is the pleb version. And Apple sells a bluetooth magic keyboard which is their flagship keyboard. But their wired keyboards are the non-flagship version of the keyboard.

Oh yeah, I remember now.

Wow, so anyone who doesn't agree with you or what Apple is doing is a whiner, but you are not?
I'm sick of all the whiners that stick up for Apple and all their crap.

How about you start with telling me how my experience has improved on each of the following points:
  1. Battery is glued in and after 5 years cannot be replaced. If it wasn't glued in it would be easy to get a third party battery to replace it.
  2. The SSD in the Apple laptop is soldered in. I do not have the choice to remove it to control the data at the end of its life, nor can I increase the storage if my needs change.
  3. Repair costs are massive due to the number of expensive components soldered on to the motherboard. (RAM, SSD, WIFI,...)
  4. I cannot replace the ram with more if my needs change.
  5. Apple could have given me 3 USB-C and 1 USB-A
  6. How is removing ports a good experience?
  7. What is the point of a 1 button mouse?
  8. Apple removed the headphone jack and I cannot find any MFI certified dongles that allow 3.5mm + charging at same time.
  9. Apple removed a feature from iMovie that allowed me to delete portions of a clip to save disk space.
  10. Apple retired Aperture and had no replacement for it, only a replacement for iPhoto.
You have eluded yourself that there is a seriously bad wave of negativity and you are blaming the posters for it?
Why not look a little closer at Apple, they have brought it all on themselves.

Yeah, the new TB MBP is getting rave reviews... What planet do some of you live on? The new TV app another success, the latest iPhone is simply just good enough, the latest Timecapsule looks promising, the new displays are great.... oops. At least the latest price points are receiving universal praise. Apple watch sales are off the charts so there is something going right.

You should look at other threads people are frustrated and it is more widespread than headphones. If anything it has been fixation on dongles.

Sadly these headphones are getting so much attention because they are about the only interesting thing Apple has done lately. I think why so many people are reacting to this is because headphones are something that the vast majority of us use daily.

I also think part of it is that a pair of Airpods seems to most of us as something that should be a rather trivial task for engineers of the caliber Apple has. Whether that is true or not doesn't matter but it seems to be the common perception.

If they can't get headphones right, can we really expect to get a bezel free, home button free, all glass, edged display, iPhone 8 next year with wireless charging??

"Stellar results" ? I don't even know where to start with so much blindness. So I won't.

Let's begin.

[*]Battery is glued in and after 5 years cannot be replaced. If it wasn't glued in it would be easy to get a third party battery to replace it.
Most people won't care. 5 years is about time to upgrade your laptop anyways, and people don't miss what they don't need.

The SSD in the Apple laptop is soldered in. I do not have the choice to remove it to control the data at the end of its life, nor can I increase the storage if my needs change.
Then settle on a quality you are comfortable with upfront. Or use external storage. Again, most consumers are not going to be cracking open their laptops to tinker with the hardware inside, and so it's a non-issue for the majority of users.

Repair costs are massive due to the number of expensive components soldered on to the motherboard. (RAM, SSD, WIFI,...)
That's what AppleCare is for.

I cannot replace the ram with more if my needs change.
If you are going to replace the ram, storage, battery, the works, may as well get a new laptop while you are at it.

Stuff like soldering parts on is likely done to save on space, in a bid to make the laptop thinner and (possibly lighter). Apple is increasingly marketing the MacBook Pro at the general consumer, who for most part are not going to bother cracking open their computers to upgrade the internals. They will likely just run it into the ground, then shop for a new computer.

Yes, I acknowledge that there exists a group of more tech-savvy users who wish to be able to modify their own computers, but they are more the exception than the norm. Apple has clearly made a decision to favour the needs of the many over the needs of the few.

Apple could have given me 3 USB-C and 1 USB-A
They could, but it would have defeated the whole point - which is to push users towards USB C and help spur adoption.

How is removing ports a good experience?
I wrote a very long post in defence of this some time back, and don't wish to regurgitate the same points again. In a nutshell, you give up 5 different, single-purpose ports in exchange for 4 multi-purpose ports which can be used for anything.

For example, I can now charge my laptop by plugging the cable in to the right or left side. I can dock everyone to a monitor or hub and connect everything to my laptop using just one cable.

It can make for a better experience, but you must want it. I am not saying the transition will be a smooth or painless one, but that it will be worth it in the end.
What is the point of a 1 button mouse?
What's wrong with it? You can still right click with and do everything you could with a normal, 2-button mouse.

Apple removed the headphone jack and I cannot find any MFI certified dongles that allow 3.5mm + charging at same time.
The point is that you don't (charge and listen at the same time). And the one dongle on kickstarter that promises to do this is very likely a scam (it's way too cheap for what it promises to do).

Apple removed a feature from iMovie that allowed me to delete portions of a clip to save disk space.
No comments on that either. Can't you do something like that using QuickTime?

Apple retired Aperture and had no replacement for it, only a replacement for iPhoto.
No comments on that, as I am not familiar with aperture and its functions.

You have eluded yourself that there is a seriously bad wave of negativity and you are blaming the posters for it?
Why not look a little closer at Apple, they have brought it all on themselves.

Apple isn't perfect, but it's not run by idiots either, and it's counterintuitive to paint the people who run Apple as such.

There's constructive criticism, and there's the kind of rancid comments you get here.

All in all, I feel Apple is doing a very good job despite its numerous apparent missteps. By all means, criticise Apple when it's deserved. But also give Apple credit where it's due. And I find the latter sorely lacking here.

Its kind of sad that all we're hearing lately is bad news or excuses coming from 1 Infinite Loop these days (or rumors of bad news). We didn't get that much new hardware this year from apple, but what was announced is either problematic in the case of the MBP, or delayed.

Courageously stupid I guess ... hopefully whoever made the decision will be looking for a job in the new year.
Kinda makes the Apple maps issue Scott Forstall lost his job over seem petty. All because he didn't want to sign an apology. Is Tim et al gonna apologize to the once loyal user base ?

I was with him on the privacy debate, but now it is time for the board to hit shuffle play on upper management.

https://www.aboveavalon.com/notes/2016/12/6/milking-the-iphone

Since Tim Cook became CEO in 2011:

The iPhone installed base has grown by 500M users.
The iPad installed base has grown by 175M users.
The Mac installed base has grown by 50M users.
Apple introduced Apple Watch, the company's first wearable product. Approximately 18M Apple Watches, a device positioned as an iPhone accessory, have been sold to date.
Apple is earning more than $6B per year of revenue through app sales via the App Store.
Apple successfully made the difficult jump from a paid music download model to streaming and is approaching 20M paying Apple Music subscribers.
Apple continues to push forward with Apple TV. The company is approaching 10M units sold since the device was updated in 2015.
Apple continues to develop key services including Apple Pay, Messages, and Maps.
What would you call that if not stellar?

Kinda makes the Apple maps issue Scott Forstall lost his job over seem petty.
That was a power play, Cook wanted him gone, and given his reputation for detail, I miss his oversight (even though Maps was a disaster).
[doublepost=1481541746][/doublepost]
Then let me start.
He's only manaaged what Jobs created, and what he has rolled out or relased on his own has been problematic. He's no innovator, unless you consider copying Microsoft and adding a stylus to an iPad is innovation

Apple has done very well under Cook, but he's only kept the ship running, we need to see some leadership from him, not the same old tired, lets make it thinner mantra

The iPhone 8 sounds too much like a dream. Most of the features rumored have been rumored year after year about the "next" iPhone. I find it really hard to believe that Apple will break the "S" cycle.

The 7 really didn't have much features, and with falling sales, its everyone's expectation that the next phone will be a major update. I think like Intel, they dropped the tick-tock schedule so the 8 (if its called that), will be a major update.
