Apple Resigns from U.S. Chamber of Commerce over Climate Change Stance

moving past the ignorance about climate change (99% of scientists have agreed on this FACT for years -- the only science not in agreement achieving nice sums of money from the energy lobby), my question is about possible spin on this story. it doesnt seem especially "green" if apple's stance is identical to that of California's largest utility, Pacific Gas and Electric Co. Energy companies are not known for their environmental concerns.

Pretty sad that Apple continues to involve itself in politics. I'm seriously considering dropping my mobile me account and moving my iphone over to T-Mobile. I don't want to be funding political activism.

That's ridiculous, and self-contradictory. First, no business is required to be a member of the Chamber, so Apple isn't exactly setting up barricades in the street. Spiking trees is "activist." Apple is just making a business decision on the side of green, which I would guess will appeal to a majority of its customer base.

Also, it's just as "activist" (not to mention silly) to cancel your phone as it is for Apple to have left the Chamber in the first place.

The level of political discourse in the U.S. is so disrespectful and negative now, it is distressing. Even if I disagreed with Apple, I would respect its First Amendment right to express a principled stand.

I'm sorry but thats entirely innacurate. Apple HAS been environmentally friendly. What they haven't done is tell Greenpeace all about it like they wanted Apple to. Instead of agreeing to Greenpeace's vague promises and getting gold stars for it like some companies, Apple was actually DOING things that were environmentally friendly and have continued to do so.

I'll take results and actions over promises and the stamp of an overzealous often fanatical organization anyday.

Kudo's to Apple for being a responsible corporation, two thumbs up.

Exactly, and Greenpeace hammered on Apple even though their actual gains were better than what Dell and HP promised to get to someday. Does anyone know if Dell and/or HP are members of the C of C? If so, Apple can now call Greenpeace's bluff and tell them to call off the hounds.

Apple really make it hard for me - have to cringe every time I click on that purchase button while hearing about this carbon-reduction worship.

Click on the link and see the compare and contrast photos of air quality at Apple’s Cupertino CA office vs. Shenzhen, China, where iPhones are manufactured.

Maybe they should pull out of the worst offending, mostly coal powered country, but then we couldn't afford iPods.

I smell a marketing campaign too– it's pretty sad. Apple just woke up one morning and realized the trendiness of going 'green' was just too good to pass up... it isn't exactly like they've always given a **** about the environment.

You just engaged in classic fallacious reasoning. (Anyone remember the actual name for this?)

Mental Retardation.

Why is it that when Apple suddenly decides to care about the environment (despite years of really not giving a crap) that they instantly become awesome and progressive?

I want to support innovation in the computer industry, not political activism. I don't even care if they launch some iSaveBabySeals campaign, just make computers with TODAY'S hadrware.

I have no problem that you want to be "green", I think as our nation becomes more educated and wealthier we will no doubt find more solutions to help our environment. For all the posters praising Apple removing themselves from the Chamber of Commerce, are you Kidding!!!?? Get your head out of the sand and
do a little research. IF Apple was really interested in being cleaner than get the hell out of China and bring the jobs to the U.S. I mean have you seen or read about the working conditions there? It has to be close to one of the dirtiest countries in the world. They basically laughed at our "Green" policies and said move along. Apples move was strictly a political move, if you can't see that then you will see the jobs move more quickly from this country when or if cap and tax is implemented. Hey I love my Mac but please don't let that love blind you from the facts.

They laughed at your green policies because per head America outputs 4 times more emissions than China so im not surprised really.

It's like britain coming to you and saying you should output a similar amount even though you have a much higher population.

I'd have laughed too.

Environmentalist wacko nonsense, blah blah blah! I wish corporations would keep their socio-political views to themselves, including Apple!

A loathsome right wing cesspool, the Chamber of Commerce is a body no self-respecting corporate citizen should play with.

Apple's principled stance should lead other 21st century corporations away from the stain of membership in this dinosaur club.

Good on ye, Apple.

just BS on Apples part, They do most manufacturing in a country with no green standards (china), just like Nike, it to appear green backing, when in reality they no greener than before. even in the Chamber of commerce was to go away, it make no difference on the so called BS green gas used to manufacture Apple computers in China. In my books, if apple want me to see them green, which they are doing on better materials etc, then they would manufacture, 100% to green standards, instead of hiding it in China.

EPEAT rates the entire line of the product from production to transaction....

I would assume Apple took a look at their user base and realized the majority of them are probably eco-freaks.

Right-winged pro-business nonsense, blah blah blah! I wish people that have nothing valuable to say would keep their socio-political views to themselves, including you!

"pro-business nonsense"

You are aware that Apple, Inc. is a business?
You are aware that Apple's greatest pursuit is profit?

Catering to the eco-nuts and tree-huggers is Apple's way to sell more computers, iPods, and iPhones. I respect their business acumen but wish they wouldn't tred so heavy on hypocrisy doing it...

I love how people are using George Orwell's newspeak more and more these days. Notice that "Right wing" means "anyone who doesn't feel guilty abou making a profit". But the most interesting one is the use of the word "citizen" to mean "slave". Notice how leftists always use "citizen" as when talking about man's responsibility to subject oneself to the state. In this case, in the form of paying onerous and pointless taxes for the operating a business.

moving past the ignorance about climate change (99% of scientists have agreed on this FACT for years -- the only science not in agreement achieving nice sums of money from the energy lobby),

Of course the rafts of scientists working for the government who will lose their job if they do not support the global warming hypothesis, are still completely unbiased. The ones "losing" the research data they're using to publish reports. The ones fabricating and cherry picking data, are committing their fraud out of altruism, eh? Not because they will lose their jobs when they report that the facts don't fit the global warming hypothesis, eh?

Anyone who believes in man made global warming is either ignorant or participating in a fraud.

I think you're probably ignorant of the actual science.

But its amazing how no proponent of this theory will discuss the science. The only line you get from them is "concensus of scientists", and a refusal to debate the science.
