Apple Responds to Heat Complaints on New iPad

This is great news! Apple stock should go up another 100 points tommorrow!

Think of the sales in countries like Canada,Russia ect...this warmth feature is a major bonus!

I just wanted to post regarding the heat issue:

I've had my new iPad since Friday and one of the first things I noticed was how much warmer it is than my iPad 2. Today however was the first time it went from just a minor annoyance to a problem...

I have only used my new iPad this afternoon to just do some light reading on a website. The iPad is not plugged in or charging; I have cellular option turned off (using WiFi only); and I haven't been using any apps that require heaving graphics usage. I am simply reading thru an online book or text.

After just 1 hour of reading, I realized that not only was the iPad hot, but the entire case that my iPad was in had become too hot to even have on my leg. That is when I pulled the iPad out of the case and realized it was completely burning up... even hurt my hand to touch the back of it.

I'm starting to realize that this is defintely a much bigger problem than just the new iPad being slighty more warm than the iPad 2. Even the screen itself becomes hot and uncomforatable to even touch or swipe.

I've now just turned it off and went back to using my laptop, since the new iPad is obviously unusable to me at this point - at least until there is either a fix for the problem or a replacement.

Yes. If compared to ICF. It is not outdated if compared to iOS. While iOS catched up somewhat (after addition of Android-like notifications) it still has way to go. For example, it still lacks a File System and support for arbitrary screen sizes.

I know of one positive for iOS. It knows that "catched" is not a word.

That's not the point. 46C is 46C no matter what! The only way the fan comes into play is that's what is used to keep it down at 46C. If there was no fan in the MBA then temps would be much higher. My whole point was people screaming like 36.6C was CRAZY hot, while my MBA at 46C only feels barely warm.
Your macbook air is 46c on the inside where the cpu is. The ipad is 46c on the outside where the user is holding it. Thats a big difference. Your macbook air is likely much cooler on the outside.

Sounds the same. Every cellphone always had and has the same antenna problem, even my old LG flip phone. It's called basic electromagnetic physics. Block the signal and you will receive less of it. With electronic circuits, when you use more power, you get more heat. All basic scientific laws and facts.

Not the same as the iPhone 4's. The iphone 4 actually dropped calls when doing it. I tried to get my droid incredible which is what I had at the time to drop a call that way and it wouldn't. I've actually only dropped a call maybe once or twice in my like 8 years I have been on verizon. My galaxy nexus doesn't suffer from this either.

Just curious, why is it a big deal?
I like that the iPad (pre 3) is cool to the touch. It makes it feel more sophisticated, more futuristic. It feels like a slate, a magical slate with a window into the internet. I can hold it for hours with no hint that it's full of electronics.

A warm iPad reminds me that it's a computer, a computer that has heat disippation issues and needs its outer case removed so that it can ventilate better. All the budget computers I've owned get hot; the quality ones stay cool. So the warmth reminds me of those crappy computers, and I associate a warm iPad with poorer construction and quality.

Is my reasoning logical? No. It's an emotional objection. Just because the iPad 3 is warm to the touch doesn't make it any worse, but it does, for me, make it lose its charm and mystique.

I can tell you that my iPad absolutely has gotten HOT on a few occasions. It's not all the time (although it does get warm pretty regularly if using it heavily), but at least twice, it has gotten pretty hot and very uncomfortable to use. This is not an imaginary issue - Apple should take it more seriously.

Not that It was a big issue. For me it was that it was not spread out evenly. That "REALLY warm spot" happened to be right where I held it. I had to move my hand. :apple:

I enjoyed the comment. I find most things I hold are warmest where I hold them.

Even temp on the case is unlikely to happen given that the case is a heat sink.

I like that some people have a problem with the heat and others who do not experience that person's iPad say it's not an issue. Then a group post a pic of two iPads and note the increase in temp. And again folks assume that this is the heat people are complaining of. My thought is what if it's not, what if they do have a problem on their iPads that is worse.

But let's not let facts and commonsense get in the way of this fine debate.

As you were.

"The new iPad delivers a stunning Retina display, A5X chip, support for 4G LTE plus 10 hours of battery life, all while operating well within our thermal specifications," Apple representative Trudy Muller, told The Loop. "If customers have any concerns they should contact AppleCare."

Wow, if there was ever a response written by a marketing department, that was it.

The hottest it's gotten is while playing Infinity Blade I, and even then I would only call it warm, around 28 degrees Celsius. Again, another blow-up in an attempt to screw around with Apple #antennagate.

iPad 4th generation: "cool"er than other tablets out there. well, at least i have reason 1 to upgrade to the next generation.. or move to england. it's never warm there right? imagine using the iPad in countries where there's a permanent heatwave.

to all those going, "boohoo. no biggie. laptop is a frying pan etc". well, an iPad is not meant to be a laptop (in that sense). it already has a benchmark of retaining it's cool in the first two generations and most of all, just answer me this: would you like a warm iPad or a cool iPad? no buts, ifs, retina, 4G, etc and that's the general gist of tthose of us unhappy about the heat.

What else would they say? "We realize we have failed with the new iPad. After careful consideration we have decided to recall the product. Everyone to the bunkers!"

Like every Apple product, people always find ways to complain.

Case 1: the iPhone 4 had a complaint about the antenna
Case 2: the iPad 2 had a complaint about the yellow spots in the corners which are only noticeable when the screen is black
Case 3: the iPhone 4S battery
Case 4: the iPad 3 battery and heat

Results... Apple continues to sell out on products after release date

Charger can't keep up with the iPad power consumption?

A TABLET heating to an uncomfortable level?

And yet they sell 3,000,000 of them lol.
