Yes. If compared to ICF. It is not outdated if compared to iOS. While iOS catched up somewhat (after addition of Android-like notifications) it still has way to go. For example, it still lacks a File System and support for arbitrary screen sizes.

Lack of a file system and lack of support for arbitrary screen sizes are actually distinguishing features of iOS. They improve the user experience.

No big whoop

Yes, it can get a tad warmer on some occasions. No, it's not a big deal, particularly when factored against the gains in the new iPad. Personally, no issue with the heat.

Do you work for Samsung or something? Which Samsung tablet similar in size to iPad is 2 times lighter? I'll give you the stereo speakers bu to the rest I say so what? AMOLED better than retina display? Seriously? The faster CPU....name a task Galaxy Tab performs better than iPad because of the faster CPU. I'd ask the same re: Transformer Prime and the quad core CPU the apple haters and tech geeks mention anytime they can.

OLED screens are much better than LCD screens in that they have orders of magnitude higher contrast ratio. Granted this particular panel does not have the resolution of iPad.

Faster CPU results in faster application loading, application switching and faster web browsing which is rather important for tablet users.

Apple issued a statement regarding the heat complaints about the new iPad.

To me, the big news isn't that it runs warmer, but that Apple so quickly and calmly responded in public.

With Jobs, they would've either stonewalled forever on the topic, or he would've replied (perhaps less nicely) via email to someone by now :)

I'm waiting for the first claims that the New iPad affects a person's sperm count...

If they use it on their lap, of course they'd be right. Even an extra 1 degree Celsius drops sperm count by up to 40%, and laptop computers/tablets can raise the local body temperature by a couple of times that amount. Young men, take note.

Upshot: those who use devices like this all the time might not have as many descendants. Darwinism at its finest, but ultimately bad as far as future family-halo sales go :)

(BTW, I'm not responding to you specifically, but to all the Android Vs iphone comments all over these forums).

I'm kind of tired of Android vs iPhone dick measuring contests.

I'm an iPhone/future iPad user myself, but develop for both platforms. They both have things they do good and some things they do bad. BOTH (but I might be a computer mysanthrope). I've bashed my head on problems for both and cursed both Larry Page and Steve Jobs in sheer frustration. And I've been amazed at things they do, both.

Bottom line is: to each his own. Other people's choice should not affect another person.

ok, I'm good now. That's felt good... I've reset my annoyed at some comments counter... Continue bashing... :D

There are two major concerns here:

* Some people say that the life of Li-poly batteries shortens if they operate at higher temperatures.
* Warts. Sweaty hands cause warts. Quote: "Warts have
a tendency to occur in patients with sweaty hands and feet for unknown reasons
". Link.

The bottom line is, and I don't dispute what other claim as hot, if it's too hot or you're concerned do exactly as Apple suggests and contact Apple Care. Or return it. It's really pretty simple.

I don't get this indignation. It's this way with every Apple product. I want Flash, I want a USB slot, I want expandable memory. Feel free but you can't have it on an Apple iPad. So I guess the iPad isn't for you. There's plenty of other choices. Move on.

You people complaing that 33.6C is hot are ridiculous!! My MacBook Air is running at 46C right now and I have to feel the bottom with the back of my hand to tell it is only SLIGHTLY warm!!! This ENTIRE freakout is STUPID!

Your macbook air has a fan, that makes a huge difference. Add a fan to the iPad and it would be stone cold. (no not suggesting apple to actually do it, for demonstrate purpose only)

I've got to stop reading here. But I couldn't let that go. Thanks my friend for the best thing I've read on the internets today. Now Apple will get sued for causing warts. Unreal.

You are welcome. I care about my fellow Apple fans.

I noticed mine get warm the first day and now it hasn't, maybe because I used it for 10 hours straight haha.

New iPad runs warm.

I like everything about the new iPad except the warm spot. Definitely noticeable under normal use. Very noticeable after intense gaming with new optimized games like Real Racing II.

Apple should have cooled this beast better no question.

I noticed last night while using my new iPad that if it is plugged in and being "actively used, i.e. restoring from icloud, or gaming" it still loses power.

I was using the apple charger that came with it. Odd.

The new SOC has some huge power draw. They had to increase the battery size like 70% and still didn't gain any additional battery life. Another dumb decision was the fact that they didn't increase the output of the chargers to compensate for this increased power draw.

What would have been interesting for them to do additonally to the new ipad would have been an iPad 2 maxx with the new battery but with the old display and gpu. 17 hour battery life is definitely something good. Motorola can't even keep the droid razr maxx in stock because its extremely popular.

That's not the point. 46C is 46C no matter what! The only way the fan comes into play is that's what is used to keep it down at 46C. If there was no fan in the MBA then temps would be much higher. My whole point was people screaming like 36.6C was CRAZY hot, while my MBA at 46C only feels barely warm.

Not a problem now

...the increased temp (definitely real) of the new iPAD may not be a problem NOW, but what happens when the weather warms up in the summer?

I remember a few times last summer when the thermometer screen came up on my iPAD2 while I was using it and I had to shut it down for a while......and I'm in CANADA = not exactly the warmest country on the planet. :)

I hope I can still take my new iPAD to the beach in the summer for some "reading" (insert surreptitious camera joke here).

http://daringfireball.net/linked/2012/03/20/comparing-temperatures

You can not use Celsius or Fahrenheit when calculating percentages. They're meaningless.

Seriously, this is less than a 2% change from the last iPad.

Technically correct, but meaningless :p

From a usability standpoint, the difference in heat transfer is much more relevant to the difference in feel. Thermal conductivity is approximately the same since it uses the same aluminum back and shouldn't change much over such a small temperature range, so it's just a function of the temperature difference between your hand and the iPad (another way to look at it is to make body temperature your reference value vs absolute zero).

In this case, it is a decrease in the heat transfer rate of 61%. Is it a significant difference? Assuming the reported numbers are representative (and I really question this due to reports of brightness and 4G having a large effect), yes. Is it an issue? Lol, no.

I actually prefer picking up metal objects and not having them suck the heat out of my hands. Try touching a piece of metal and then a piece of cloth that are both at room temperature; the metal feels colder because the thermal conductivity is higher, making the heat transfer rate higher. The metal is like your iPad 2, while the cloth is like the new iPad (minus the texture obviously).

Anyway, we're not talking a gaming rig that is better at heating a room than a space heater here... ;)

OK so OLED screens are better but the current Android screens don't have the resolution of the iPad. So once again declaring something better based on spec and not user experience. I could care less if OLED is supposedly better than LCD when there isn't one tablet on the market that comes close to Apple's retina display.

As far as the other stuff do you have some stats to prove that the Galaxy Tab or Transformer Prime do all (or any) of the above better than iPad? I don't care if that's what a faster CPU is supposed to do. If they don't beat iPad in the real world then again I say so what, who cares?

I agree. It removes the illusion of a slate with a portal to content and you are reminded that there is a huge battery and processor inside it.

This is absolutely true. Lithium based batteries are very heat sensitive.

My girlfriend just got pregnant when I walked in the room with the New iPad. So, I would say that it has helped my sperm count.*

*results may vary for others

If your girlfriend claims that she got pregnant just because you walked in her room with iPad you might have a bigger problem than iPad heat. Unless you were talking about the "room" metaphorically. But then again you have even bigger problem because you should never enter that "room" with your iPad. :D

You get a bad joke eel

I don't need or want an ipad. I'm not an Apple sheep who has to have every toy Apples sweat shops churn out. I refuse to buy products from companies that don't respect American workers. Steve Jobs can suck it.

Is this the Original Sin of Apple handheld products??

My friend worked at Apple when the original iPhone/iPhone 3G were released...he said a lot of people came in to the store and complained, "my phone gets hot!" Of course, it was simply getting warm with constant use in someone's palm, which is not abnormal at all.

Then again, we can't overestimate peoples' intelligence...my friend also told me that people would boot up their iPhone and freak out, wondering what was wrong with it, because their Apple had a crack in it!!

iOS_logo_large.jpg

My new iPad is at ~60% brightness (auto brightness on) and it gets warm, but never hot (or "too hot"). My Macbook Air gets a lot warmer, but even when I'm typing on my lap I never feel like it gets too hot either. Now my 2011-spec Toshiba laptop from work, that thing will burn my legs off...

There's a laughable over reaction to all of this. It's just a tiny bit of heat. I've used my iPad now for 4 or 5 hours straight. I played Fifa, Real Racer HD, mucked around with Garage Band, and there was a slight increase in temperature, but certainly not anything "too hot". Just mildly warm.

Talk about making a mountain out of a molehill!

Not really tiny. You living in the north hemisphere have just entered autumn. I wonder if the 'base' iPad temperature will be around 35ºC in the summer, so a 5ºC increase is a source of concern. Here in my city we had temperatures around 40ºC some days before, so an iPad would be unusable away from an air conditioner.
