I could prolly just email MacRumors and say that I just got fired from an Apple Store and the company is headed towards bankruptcy. I could be another "report".

This far into the comments and only one about the Olympics?

C'mon guys, head in the game.

- Apple ramps up staff for London Olympics (documented)
- Olympics end
- Apple lays off significant staff at "Certain UK Stores"

MY GOD. IF I COULD ONLY. FIND. THE CONNECTION. HERE.

Not to put a damper on all the nay-sayers, but I seem to recall a report about how Apple UK was beefing up parts supplies, foreign language keyboards in stock, and retail staff in anticipation of the need to service the foreign press during the Olympics.

The closing ceremonies were yesterday, and the demand is gone!

Adieu, new workers who processed the crowds.

Now that would make since, but still sucks for worker who just finished apple camp.

The Olympic Effect

It isn't really hard to put this together. With the influx of tourists and such to the UK for the London Games, I would guess that a number of retailers hired on extra staff in the last few months, only to be letting ten go with the close of the games.

It happened here in Vancouver 2 years ago after the Winter games as well.

This isn't really unexpected news.

You beat me to it!

There's an app for that....

Actually, tried their "app for that" a while ago to purchase an adapter cable. I went to the store to pick it up, still had a hard time getting someone's attention so I can complete my purchase. And then when I got someone to wait on me, they had the product with my name on it, but could not sell it to me because it was not "in their system".

I ended up, cancelling the order via the app. Walked over to the shelf, grabbed another one and paid for it the old fashioned way. Took me over half an hour to make it all happen - what a disaster.

Honestly it sucks for everybody employed in the London Olympic Movement about to get the kibosh now that the games are but a memory.

But hey, at least $15 billion changed hands in this games. None of these employees would likely have been employed AT ALL without that, and the games were pretty good.

What are the sources for this story? Name some names, name some stores otherwise it's just BS.

And yet at my local store (Valley Fair in Santa Clara) over the weekend, which was packed as usual, I saw at least two different Apple workers being trained.

Finally, someone makes some sense.

How do you explain the fact that the OP also mentioned similar reports for the US and Canada?

Just in time for the new Passbook-run self-checkout we'll be seeing.

Don't they already have self-checkout? I guess Passbook might make it a little easier.

Lol. Dude, all you needed to do was pick up the cable, scan and pay using the app, and then just walk out. No need to talk to anybody to 'complete your purchase.' I bought the Apple rechargable battery kit (great deal BTW) that way and it took all of one minute. It's rather brilliant actually.

I recommended Apple Care plan for a friend who recently bought an iP4S and when she walked in to buy AC they wanted her to bloody well book an appointment!!!!!!

To buy Apple Care!!!!

Can you imagine going in to buy a phone, iPod or Computer and being told you have to book an appt??? That would be insane.

I cannot see any reason why she would have had to wait for 50mins for the next available APPOINTMENT to buy a product.......

You wanted higher wages and you got them. The downside is you can't employ as many people.

Yes. Screwing the worker into lower wages that don't really pay the rent is the only way for Apple to be great. I mean, Apple barely has enough money in the bank for a dividend.

It's only fair to Apple and the Employees to evaluate it from both sides.

While it's easy to throw Apple Stores into the broader category of "retail", these are boutiques that stay very busy. At least in the 20 or so stores, I've been into in various states as I travel.

That said, it's highly likely we only have some of the facts, so to draw a conclusion is rather irrelevant.

In each and every case, I've found them busy, well merchandised and clean, and very attentive to customers. It doesn't get any better than that. If Apple cuts back on staff, when iOS devices alone are flying off the shelves, it's hard to imagine the cost to re-hire and train when the holidays arrive.

Yeah, but I imagine that if they had some sort of self-checkout terminal with Passbook it would be easier to regulate. In the current system shoplifting seems that it could be more of an issue.

Precisely this is the trick that some governments all around the world use to 'show' low unemployment rates (aka, USA, but also Germany with its 400 EUR/month jobs)... :)

Ya I always wondered how that worked when using the Apple Store App (regarding the shoplifting security for accessories).

You can't really tell that through forum posts. Obviously, I'm not going to get a customer who asks me how to open iPhoto and say "Dude lol you're such a noob" or "/Applications/iPhoto.app/Contents/MacOS/iPhoto". But if someone here says something like "HSPA+ is not 4G", I'm going to say "Yes, because you define 4G, not the ITU."

Wait, you have two accounts?

Yeah, actually you can tell that through your posts. People who have worked retail wouldn't be spouting the crap you are spouting (people like me). People who work retail for one don't have this attitude that it's easy. Sure, it doesn't require computer skills or a lot of knowledge about that kind of thing. But don't mistake that for easy (though I will admit in this economy with less shoppers out it does get boring, any job does though when there's not much to do. And if you don't have much shoppers, you aren't going to have as much work to do either. But retail when it's healthy is not easy and I'm absolutely sure a job at the Apple store where they are really busy is far from easy or relaxing and you absolutely need to be able to handle people well which is something not everyone can do. And it requires more than just not insulting people... once again you are showing your ignorance. Sometimes you have to know when some one is going to take something as an insult when you had no idea that some one could construe it that way. As I said before, you will have to deal with people whose minds don't work the same way you do and start learning when things might be construed badly even if you didn't think they would be).

(I honestly wish everyone had to try to work retail. First it would make them much more sympathetic customers. Secondly, they'd stop acting like it's not work/easy. Sure, it doesn't require high level skills with computers, but it does require people skills. I opened a brand new store once and one of the guys they hired was also a guy who worked the medical field working with people who needed their kidneys emptied <- sorry, I forget the terminology. He said he wanted the retail job as a second job cause he wanted something easy and relaxing. Yeah, I knew he was not going to last long. I think he lasted a week, two at most. He left before we actually opened the store, I know that much. It was far too much work for him).

And nope, this is my only account. If some one else is echoing the same thing, maybe you should realize your ignorance is more see through than you think.

Steve Jobs was the one who shifted production to China for cheaper manufacturing costs while maintaining/expanding the profit margins. Most of the executives don't care about the person all the way at the bottom of the company working in a retail store. One of the few exceptions would of been Sam Walton.

Absolutely. Job's bless him, would not let a few retail jobs stand in the way of “biggering the bottom line”.

This is the face of the modern retail experience.

Yes, it was Ford who at the time paid his employees $5 per day and he ended up selling a boat load of cars. Manufacturing was changed forever! There is no way on Earth that retail employees can afford Apple's computers without saving or using their charge cards.

Your forgot to factor in inflation.
