We have (had) music memos? What is going on with Apple that they cannot get the word out about what their products can do? I hope Steve Jobs is not rolling to much with where Apple is going.

Rember when Apple made software and hardware that allowed users to be creative? Now we have Apple TV and Apple music that let us watch and listen to what other creative people do.
Yeah, they should make apps to help people create things like presentations, movies, music and edit images :(

Well that’s a shame. Music Memos has been really handy over the years to capture a guitar rhythm before it gets forgotten. Maybe I’m getting old but even a catchy rhythm is gone from recall before I know it.

This app never worked very well and was incredibly sluggish and oftentimes unresponsive. It was a nice idea that didn’t get the attention it deserved. I’m surprised they ever released it in the first place to be honest.
Were you using it with an iPhone 2G? Cause it was super responsive on my phones.

This is really a shame! I have loved this app, especially is transcription functionality.... I wonder if voice memos will incorporate that function. I really hope so.
Nope. Voice memos has none of the same features. No note recognition, no timing assists. It’s completely lacking.

This is a tone-deaf decision on Apples part.

I'm somewhat amused by all the "I've never heard of it" comments. I imagine there's a lot of other apps you don't know exist too!

I didn't know it had a built in tuner though. I use guitar toolkit for that if I want to tune using my phone (but there's loads of other free or cheap tuner apps about). I kinda forgot about music memos along the way as it was a bit sluggish on my old phone compared to voice memos and never got around to getting it when I got my iPad. It's kinda a great idea, but it wasn't great trying to work out the rhythm to highly syncopated stuff and definitely no chance in hell if your songs aren't 4/4. So the chord changes and rhythm seldom seemed to fit my style of writing. Ed Sheeran = yes, prog metal + crazy funk/jazz = no.

When you open the app, it warns that it will be discontinued in March, but you can continue to use it on iOS 14. Does that mean it will stop working at some point in the future, like when iOS 15 comes out?

Really bummed by this, too. The app had issues for sure, but it did just what I needed :(

I'm looking for good replacements but haven't found something as easy to use yet. Drop a note here if you find something good!!

Keep an eye on GarageBand. They added the ability to go right into doing an unfiltered audio recording quickly and easily from the start screen. All they’d have to do is add the scale detect function (drums are already there).

To all the "buggy and slow" folks, I believe it was syncing to iCloud. I have to occasionally wait a few seconds on first open, but never had it crash on any device.

I use it every day, and the functionality of instant drums and bass on a quick acoustic recording, and the looping made it great for practicing a difficult part, trying out different solo bits, and working out sections.

I just last week went to the trouble of making a few feature requests too :/

Apple is planning to retire its Music Memos app, which was first released in 2016 as an app designed to allow musicians and songwriters to capture song ideas on the fly. Since its launch, the app received few updates from Apple, and going forward, the app will receive no more updates.

According to an Apple Support document, Music Memos will no longer be available for download after March 1, 2021, but the app will still be available for use and can be downloaded from the App Store purchase history.

Still, Apple says that users should export Music Memos recordings to the Voice Memos library to ensure that they're saved, and the company is encouraging people to use Voice Memos over Music memos.

Apple today updated Music Memos to version 1.0.7, adding a new feature that allows Music Memos recordings to be exported to the Voice Memos library. Apple says that Voice Memos can be used to quickly capture ideas, and recordings can be taken further with GarageBand.

Exporting Music Memos to Voice Memos requires an iPhone with iOS 14 or an iPad with iPadOS 14, along with the latest versions of Voice Memos and Music Memos. Exported content will appear in Voice Memos in a folder titled "Music Memos."

Really disappointing news. It’s no exaggeration to say that this app is one of the main reasons I stuck with iPhone in recent years.
There’s simply no comparison with Voice Memos which is just a rudimentary voice notes app (with a not very inspiring interface and poor sampling quality — there are dozens of third party apps that do as well or better for free or the price of a coffee).

The genius of Music Memos is that it can be set to record on listening for the first sound (it’s a good idea to count in loudly so it can recognise and adjust to your rhythm); it also recognises the key and chords and transcribes the music it hears (and you can print this out for further editing etc); and for a bit of fun (and great when you’re just exploring a rough chord progression, say) it adds simple, on-time drums and bass to your recording!

And if all that is not enough...

AMAZING BONUS FEATURE: And only a year or so ago I discovered that you can even output the recorded files to GarageBand or Logic (which follows your natural rhythm rather than a superimposed click track) so you can further edit the midi accompaniment. This is such an amazing and under-appreciated feature that even most Music Memos users don’t know about it.

If you play an acoustic instrument and compose songs, far from being just another digital recording app Music Memos is one of the essential apps on iOS and one of the first I install on iPhones or iPads. There’s no third party app that comes close when you need a quick recorder that can afterwards be the first step to a more involved recording session. I bought Logic Pro X a couple of months ago (and love it) but it was and still is Music Memos that I turn to first when just playing around with new ideas. Anything good that comes out of it can be sent on to Logic later: good ideas are always stronger when they’re kept simple early on.

If you don’t already have it, download it now, quick: even with its sometimes puzzling behaviour it’s fantastic. And free!! I have an old iPod that I can no longer upgrade. I’ll keep a copy there in case some half-wit at Apple decides to wipe this out with a future iOS update. Believe me, it’s worth the price of a secondhand iPod or iPhone just to have this to hand.
