Did they announce when this will be available? No chance I'll be buying one, but one of the academics I support most likely will, which will mean I get his dust bin mac pro handed back.

Not really, look at a similarly specced HP Z6 workstation:

Why? Not saying the new Mac Pro is over priced. I'm talking about add-ons -- PCI-e cards, RAM, SSD, etc. PARTS. Locked into Apple designed and branded (and overpriced) parts?

To say this is beyond pro expectations is an understatement. Apple has invented new ideas and processes wayyyy beyond the simple spec bumps people have been asking for. They’ve been truly innovative and inventive, creating things people didn’t even know they wanted. Which is a very Steve Jobs (and Henry Ford) way of thinking and operating. This is the new gold standard for pros across all platforms. This thing is spectacular.

I think it will also help usher in a new era for Final Cut and Logic, helping them ascend back into pro workflows and professional post houses, and even Hollywood. They crushed it.

Can’t wait to get my hands on one.

Steve would have made this much more affordable (and to cheers) for the mid-range pro user with more pro tiers to go up. And he knew about how to dominate a market by having something priced lower to bring in the users into the eco-system. The majority of the pro base isn't this top end group that you are talking about...they aren't going to go to Final Cut or Logic, they are going to stay in Premiere, Avid, etc.

A "pro" machine would have been a C246 motherboard, i7 or xeon E and a Decent Radeon Pro. $2800. That should be an entry Apple workstation.
And then, the expert machine, starting at $5999.

Jony Ive doesn't care about design anymore.

Don't think he ever did, seems more like a decent CAD operator who had a boss with a design vision. Since his new boss took over and only seems to care about profits, the design side has been sliding backwards...

$6000 for an 8 core, though. Ryzen 3 is looking great right about now.
.

Happy that it's not a smaller box and a legit expandable box. The pricing is absolutely nuts though. $5K for 256GB SSD. Do we know if these are removable? Are they proprietary.

Amazing, incredible. Apple making the fastest computer in the world again with an accelerator card. Feels like Apple is back with a new Quadra for us all.

For all the Apple noobs out there, here are the 1993 Quadra prices - $6k for this new Mac Pro is totally reasonable in the corporate or scientific research space.

Introduced March 22, 1993:
  • Macintosh Quadra 950: 33 MHz 68040 CPU.[6] $7,200 for a floppy drive only model, $8,499 with a 230 MB HDD, and $9,199 with a 400 MB HDD.[2] 8 MB of memory was standard everywhere except for some European countries, where the standard included memory was 4 MB.
  • Workgroup Server 95: Sold in several configurations, all of which include a 33 MHz 68040 CPU and a PDS card containing a fast SCSI connection.[7] In the United States, the configurations were split into "File and Print", and "Database" configurations:
    • File/Print: 16 MB RAM, 230 MB HDD, 128 KB L2 cache. $7,589.[8]
    • File/Print: 16 MB RAM, 500 MB HDD, DDS-DC digital tape drive, 256 KB L2 cache. $10,039.[8]
    • File/Print: 32 MB RAM, 1000 MB HDD, DDS-DC digital tape drive, AppleShare Pro, 512 KB L2 cache. $12,839.[8]
    • Database: 32 MB RAM, 230 MB and 500 MB HDDs, DDS-DC digital tape drive, 256 KB L2 cache. $11,319.[8]
    • Database: 48 MB RAM, 230 MB and 1000 MB HDDs, DDS-DC digital tape drive, 512 KB L2 cache. $12,929.[8]

As to the stand, is that not for an alternative and optional stand? Yes it’s expensive for a stand but I’m sure the screen comes with a ‘basic’ stand.

The Apple site specifically says the pro stand and VESA adapter are sold separately. The monitor doesn't come with any method of standing it up out of the box. Hope you don't mind leaning it against your mac pro. ***** insane.

Any chance you could post a link toa pc part picker build list? I am looking to build something on the PC side for C4D now that I see these prices. Thanks.

You want my identical spec? If so no problem .if not, what spec are you looking for? What you going to use it for?

This one is unfortunately DOA for our studio. We edit and finish theatrically released feature docs at 4K on our Mid 2009 Mac Pros (albeit souped up with Xpanders and nVidia Titan X cards). I don't yet see a clear advantage to upgrading to this new MP. Many here mention CUDA but for filmmakers what ultimately matters is the performance, not the engine that delivers it. If these AMD GPUs can deliver the performance I need with the client in the room (and I am sure Avid and Blackmagic are already working on optimizing their software for these GPUs) this computer will be in the mix. If it was a $1,000 cheaper maybe. There's just no reason to update yet.

My only hold up is... why not a Space Grey enclosure to match the rest of the Pro line design theory? Same with the XDR Display.

Agree with most long time users here... this is the ultimate machine that has been desired by the pro community for a long time. The 2013 MP was a disgrace, and the external GPU vision it was sold with never really caught on for pros. 20K for a production computer that is 100% warrantied and workflow approved is a small price to pay, relative to salaries and travel expenses.

I think the biggest joke was using this for (most) software development... This is an AV production machine, not much else warrants this horsepower.

Sorry but I don't buy that the number of people who genuinely need a PCI slot is "astronomical". Tons of computers with PCI slots have shipped and never had any used beyond the video card it came with.

You don't have to buy it, I didn't say that.
I said that the market below it must be huge. And since it is huge, there are probably a lot of different things people want.

For example, upgrade your GPU. Or add a second one. Or add a UAD audio DSP. Or have proper cooling. Or add multiple hard drives.

I'm sure there are lots of people who don't want the Mac mini or iMac, and are waiting for an upgradable Mac. Me included. This wasn't it.

For iMacs there are iMac and iMac Pro.
For Mac, there should be Mac and Mac Pro.

Just my 2 cents :)

After further review, beginning to have doubts.

I’m hoping that ifixit finds some pci 6pin/8pin power connections too..

I'm shocked.

It's pretty much exactly what many of us have been begging for since 2013.

It's a freakin' miracle.

Thank you to the brave bothans who must have had Jonny tied up in a broom closet while this was being designed!

I suspect that at least some of what seems like excessive cost at the entry point can be blamed on the one-size-to-fit-all-configs 1.4kw power supply and the custom GPU card interface they used to connect the GPU to the system wide TB3?

If they made a zero GPU version and offered a smaller power supply (upgradable later) available, I suspect the entry price would be closer to what many had hoped?

Perhaps these options could show up in the rack mount version? Time will tell.

I can't wait for iFixit to tear one apart and see if the CPUs are soldered or not... fingers crossed...

I didn't expect Apple to come close to this, so haven't begun to set the funds aside to upgrade, but could see one of these in my future.

The display on the other hand? Not including the vesa adaptor or the stand in the $4999 price takes some stones... The stand reminds me way too much the the iMac G4 arm... So, hard pass, especially at that price.. Hope the after-market steps up on that... And all the talk about HDR and photography then ignoring the fact that they could use this as an opportunity to make some of use really happy, and bring back Aperture? Oh well.

...the end of the “Apple doesn’t care about the Mac anymore” BS.

We will see if Apple follows through or goes another 6 years without an update. There is more to commitment than shoving something out the door and then disappearing for over half a decade. By finally releasing something they are half way there.

No front panel port: if you want to plug in headphones, a flash drive, or other accessory, you have to reach to the back of the Mac.
No access panel: to get inside the Mac, you have to disconnect every single connected cable and pull the Mac from under the desk so you can pull the entire sleeve up.
I like the interior of this thing but not crazy about the exterior. Speaking from a practicality perspective.

Well, the original cheese grater was one of the best Macs I ever owned… I like the new one.
I just don't need it anymore because my work has become so much more mobile…

Still an awesome machine.

You're making a baseless assumption. Where does it say all those have to come from Apple? Can you cite the source? The whole point of all the PCI-E slots is future upgradeability. You can also use any RAM on it, like I did on the Mac Mini.

There are 2 USB-C ports on the top.
