Is the new entry level MP slower then 6 year old MP?

More like the G5This looks a lot like the first version of the Mac Pro![]()
This one is unfortunately DOA for our studio. We edit and finish theatrically released feature docs at 4K on our Mid 2009 Mac Pros (albeit souped up with Xpanders and nVidia Titan X cards). I don't yet see a clear advantage to upgrading to this new MP. Many here mention CUDA but for filmmakers what ultimately matters is the performance, not the engine that delivers it. If these AMD GPUs can deliver the performance I need with the client in the room (and I am sure Avid and Blackmagic are already working on optimizing their software for these GPUs) this computer will be in the mix. If it was a $1,000 cheaper maybe. There's just no reason to update yet.
But think about it. Every time Apple produces a computer, or a phone, or whatever that is nicely designed, they complain that it's "form over function". So what do the same people do when a product is pure function? They complain about the design. All the comments here are about how it looks. This is supposed to be for "professionals," whatever that means... No one has commented on the specs at all. But that's what I've come to expect from many here - gotta look cool because I'm a professional.
Alright, then instead throw the 970 PRO 1TB for $329, which is the best NVME ssd around, made for endurance and performance, and before you answer, the only reason why Apple would charge you more for the SSD upgrade is not because performance. Seriously, the 970 PRO is the best SSD Samsung can produce and Apple use Samsung's SSDsSure could but that Samsung ssd is cheaper for a reason.
Please report back when you have built one with similar specs.Hackintoshing has never looked more promising.
Well, good for you video guys.Video professionals, like myself, have NAS setups which more adequately support the 100TB+ storage needs we have.
The Apple site specifically says the pro stand and VESA adapter are sold separately. The monitor doesn't come with any method of standing it up out of the box. Hope you don't mind leaning it against your mac pro. ***** insane.
Have to ask why do you need Cuda?
Jony Ive doesn't care about design anymore.
Soldered processor?
Happy that it's not a smaller box and a legit expandable box. The pricing is absolutely nuts though. $5K for 256GB SSD. Do we know if these are removable? Are they proprietary.
I spent 100 bucks last week on AWS because I had to run pytorch with is Cuda or CPU. I was modeling the evolution of the system the ear uses to communicate with the brainScientific apps. Don't want to get more specific than that. Multi-platform too, so rewriting specifically for the new Mac Pro isn't going to happen.
Maybe it's a niche use case, but it's a use case Apple is closing off.
And called it the xMac?It is nice and all, I guess, but they should have announced a "mini Pro" too that is a smaller version of that thing with half the slots at $2999.
Will do. I bet it'll cost WAY less than six grand to. No apple tax. Please report back when you have built one with similar specs.
The commitment demonstrated by Apple is readily apparent with this release, and is far from just shoving something out the door. I’d say they’re about 90% of the way there. We will see if Apple follows through or goes another 6 years without an update. There is more to commitment than shoving something out the door and then disappearing for over half a decade. By finally releasing something they are half way there.

The iMac 27" is a fine machine. And the iMac Pro is a fine machine as well.I just wish they had introduced a version with consumer level but still crazy powerful processors and graphics. Remember when a G5 could be had for $15000 at the high end or $1500 at the low end? I miss that $2500 configuration.
Dude, are you comparing this to iPad or something? Have you seen real PC Workstations lately? They even support NVIDIA GPUs (critical for many users who need CUDA).To say this is beyond pro expectations is an understatement. Apple has invented new ideas and processes wayyyy beyond the simple spec bumps people have been asking for. They’ve been truly innovative and inventive, creating things people didn’t even know they wanted. Which is a very Steve Jobs (and Henry Ford) way of thinking and operating. This is the new gold standard for pros across all platforms. This thing is spectacular.
I think it will also help usher in a new era for Final Cut and Logic, helping them ascend back into pro workflows and professional post houses, and even Hollywood. They crushed it.
Can’t wait to get my hands on one.
