I just wish they would release a new version because they have a lot of new features, not because its a new year. I'm not a fan of this annual release. Just as you get say El Capitan stable with 10.11.5 or .6 along comes Sierra

Ewww, no thanks. Luckily Apple have made it perfectly clear that touchscreens are staying on iOS and mice/keyboards are staying on macOS. No gimmicky touchscreen desktop OS.

The usability of a touch screen depends on the form factor. Apple seem unwilling to change the form factor of their machines to accommodate a touch screen OSX. If hardware and software are implemented well, touch screen would be nice.

Not that I am not enjoying new releases from Apple but I really miss those Mac OS X releases during Steve.
I think the most urgent touches would be to fix the highly primitive finder and task bar, as well as revive the mail app. Macs used to be well ahead of windows, now it's the opposite. But I'm afraid that the next versions will probably focus more on Siri, Apple Music, and new smileys :)

Maybe interface will be even flatter. I mean flat like F... FLAT - Apple will call it Space Flat. Just like the the booting chime. That was never removed - it's called Space Boot.

tighter integration with iCloud - might sync the entire system to iCloud.
To be honest, it has been a refuge that the Downloads folder is not synced to iCloud. Even for people with unlimited bandwidth and plenty of speed, it can be quite ridiculous to immediately begin uploading a multi-gigabyte file after downloading it.

Honestly I would hope for much greater control over the iCloud syncing.

I'd like to see iCloud become a lot more flexible. Being able to share directories / and / or allowing complete access to iCloud drive to other users.

A deep price reduction / extra storage space would be nice - only then would sync from Mac <-> iCloud be viable ( ignoring connectivity issues that may arise).

Please Apple, all I want is:
1. Apple File System (obviously)
2. A new backup scheme that incorporates some form of data integrity check/protection
3. A new Finder (!) to go with both of the above (I'm dreaming I know)
4. Metal with full DirectX 12/Vulkun feature parity
5. Wrappers for Vulkun and OpenGL 1.5 running on top of Metal (dreaming again, but hey, why not)

As for the name, now that we've shifted the branding away from (Mac) OS X to macOS, why don't they just call it, macOS 11 :p

iCloud is nowhere close to Google functionality and at this point I don't see how they could fix such a huge mess.

If you don't know it yet, TripMode can help with that by making it possible for you to block or allow network access to individual applications and processes, as well as displaying the amount of network data each application or process is using. It's not perfect, some websites don't work even though the browser is given permission to access the network (presumably there are some necessary background processes that are blocked).
I heard about it, but geez, this should be something built into macOS itself. On Windows 10, I can enable metered connection, disable background apps.

Flat would be a good idea, with more simplicity and more options.

Well, here is are some examples off of the top of my head:
Disk Utility
Given how many applications ship with macOS and how much functionality the OS (System Preferences gives you a view of a lot of those features), that you can only come up with one application shows that the 'dumbing down' is limited to only a few areas.

The best gift they could give me now is the message that a dedicated macOS team has been reinstated. There is actually none, just a single common one where iOS comes first. That's why macOS is mirroring the iOS features as shoddy replicas, like FaceTime and iMessages in macOS with their own issues in Sierra, and Siri which barely even makes sense and if you'd try it it's dysfunctional.

It's a second class citizen and it's sad. I wouldn't get my hopes up for the next release. My macOS 10.13 expectations would be something like APFS, iTunes / Apple Music improvements, new Emojis, improved Photos app with face recognition etc, improved Messages apps, redesigned Maps app with limited transit support, maybe a News app. Basically features catching up with iOS.

No thanks. OSX has been dumbed down enough already. No unification necessary especially if that involves making OSX a closed ecosystem - downloading software only from the (Mac)AppStore.

Sierra was a very disappointing release. Hopefully 10.13 will be better.

Together with Snow Leopard, Sierra is the best release ever.

Meh, my laptop has been put out to pasture by Apple since 12/31. It's ok. I don't see how much better macOS can get on it since new features most likely wouldn't be compatible anyways.

OK Mr. Cook lets just focus on fixing the bugs that are piling up with each new OS version. We really don't need 10.13 until 10.12 is actually solid. I mean we are talking about the next version after 3 revisions of the current version. Bring me back to the Apple that made 10.6.8 with 8 revisions so it was rock solid

There is a lot of stuff that third-party software adds to the OS functionality, look at things like audio handling enabled by Airfoil and Audio Hijack Pro, or things like ExpanDrive, Mountain, TextExpander, BlueHarvest, Flux, Little Snitch, etc..

Since I learned that they merged macOS and iOS dev teams with focus on iOS I got not much hope left for macOS to be anything but a new name with a couple of half baked iOS features in it.
Please proof me wrong, Apple!

Which you don't have to switch to before 10.x.3 or 10.x.4 if you don't want to.
