This article says "Each smartphone includes Portrait mode with Portrait Lighting" but the Apple website begs to differ. I believe you need the two cameras to do anything 'portrait'

I just watched the keynote back and it does indeed confirm the portrait lighting feature is for the 8 Plus and X. NOT the standard iPhone 8.

Best thing I did was wait until today and got the 7 plus at a discount
I waited for stock to catch up with demand, have had the 7+ for about 7 months now and love it, I got AppleCare for it as I plan to keep it for up to 2 years...it's a great phone, you just got it at a better price...not only did you get it for less, the 8 is $50 more than the 7 was last year :p .

ALSO: I have to say, that gold color looks a bit like copper, without seeing in person, I think I'd like it a lot, but, one very big caveat: GOLD with BLACK BEZELS ALREADY! Gold colors look great with black, not just white. Arg!

But, I think I'll be keeping my 7+ for a while. When new iPhones support 600MHz LTE bands, I'll upgrade, (T-mo is beginning to buy and implement these bands which go through walls and such even better than 700MHz).

Yes, this is an extension of the Portrait mode, which is only on the dual lens iPhones. ...I wonder if iOS 11 will bring this feature to the 7+ also?

Speak for yourself, bucko.

Oh, wait. Said that already.

It's the truth though. Apple already had the 7 and 7 Plus to target people that want the vintage iPhone. There is going to be so much demand for the iPhone X they should have dedicated all of their production to it.

You keep saying this like the 8 is a superior product to the X when you know it's not. It's not a bad product, but who wants to pay that much for a new phone and know you don't have "the best" model. Sure if it was a budget phone fine, but most people will happily pay a couple hundred more for the X.

Still no OIS on the tele and the wide angle is stuck at f1/8. I'd much rather have a significant camera update than Qi charging.

Thanks for saving me a big wad of cash this year, Apple!

83% more light with the same aperture on the lens(es) means the sensor size grew 83%. That means much better low light quality and less noise - more than a jump to a f/1.4 lens would do and about the same as bringing the 'portrait' lens down to close to f/2.2. The camera is actually what might make me upgrade from my 7+!

The thread for the iPhone X is at 19 pages and growing. This is at 3 pages and barely moving. Not much interest in this product.
The X thread has a lot of complaints in it though, so the term "interest" is pretty loose.

It is not the truth, it is just your opinion. For one, Apple understands market segmentation. For another, not everyone buys these products for the geek bragging rights. In fact, not many, in the real universe of people, which is massively underrepresented on these boards. All of this sounds so familiar. From the resident geeks we got earfuls about how nobody was going to want an Apple Watch or an iPad. They were so right, obviously. Gimme more of that geek logic.

The other thing we know is the supplies on the X are going to be constrained due to the manufacturing of the OLED displays, and presumably some of the other new tech in this phone. Thought I'm sure Apple would be delighted if everyone who wanted an iPhone would pay a grand for it, we have to know it would be suicidal to offer phones starting at that price. So you see they provide a range, from $349 (IIRC) to north of $1,000. None of the less expensive iPhones are "superior products" to the X, they make iPhones attainable for people who want one but who don't have a grand to spend on one and really don't care, as you do, that they are necessarily the very latest and very greatest.

I guess if not having "the best" of something really bothers you that much. You probably don't have "the best" of anything really, unless you happen to be a multi-millionaire. In any case, I haven't had "the best" iPhone in years, due to the fact that I don't want to carry around a phone the size of a small tablet. Btw, much of the iPhone X thread is people deriding it, mainly for the price and the notch, among other things.

Btw, here's the link if you really want "the best" iPhone.

Who would buy this thing? Looks old fashioned as hell and screams I'm too poor for the iPhone X. If you carry Apple you want to look like you have money. This screams I'm cheap.

Now buying Samsung, that screams "I'm too poor for an iPhone", right?

Is it really the case that people around you buy stuff with the sole purpose that people think they have money? In that case, you are surrounded by idiots. I myself still carry a Nokia 2115. I'm so rich, I don't need to worry what people think, which is clearly demonstrated by my phone.

Read in an interview with Michael Winner: He saw a picture that he really liked. But when he wanted to buy it, it cost $24 million. And he couldn't afford it :-( Being a multi-millionaire doesn't mean you can afford the best of everything.

That's good to hear about the sensor. Imagine if it were combined w/larger aperture!

Interested to discover actual size of sensor.

It's sad that the iPhone 8 didn't get a special video and ad shown at the event today. Why even have the 8 when everything is focused on the X?

Color me grumpy! The smaller phone legion got nothing. Zilch. Nada. "Bionic" A11 chip in the 8 and the SE still rocking the A9. Somebody please explain what could be the dumbest product line photo I've ever seen:

other than he obvious answer: to prop up the high-end price points. For the love of Steve, do we really need both the 6s and the 7?? Didn't anyone in the boardroom balk at that lineup? Drop the aging 6s and update the SE! No reason it couldn't have the A10 processor. Lord!

P.S. If I replace my dying 6 with an SE this weekend and they announce improvements in March, I'll be Bionic Grumpy!

Even better, ditch the SE and 6s and replace those three with a single small phone. The small phone should have all the features of the 8 and in addition be as thick or thicker than the SE and feature a rugged frame that can hold up to being sat on.

In other words, think different. Change the smartphone market instead of chasing Samsung.

Here you go, dude. Just for you. Carry this around and everyone will think you're a rich db with FU money:

How did I miss this gem? This has to be one of the stupidest/saddest things I've read in awhile.

Well I was being a little sarcastic, but it's also somewhat the truth. I mean how many times have I read on here that owning Apple stuff makes someone look "better" or "wealthier" then someone who has an Android phone. If a person believes that they would want the X.

Manufacturing just doesn't work that way...the X has several new components in it, (new sensors, new display), it may take a while to ramp up production. While others have been making phones with OLED screens, the OLED in the X has full P3/HDR color, a level of quality that is brand new tech.

It is the same with Teala's Model 3, in the first few months they will make several thousand of them, but, their goal is to produce 500,000 a year...components come from different sources, if any one of these are delayed or have quality issues, it will slow production of the vehicles while they wait for more of that one component, even though they have plenty of all the other components.

Not sure why the hate for the 8. o_O

90% of the time I unlock my phone via touch ID while pulling it out of my pocket. That will be IMPOSSIBLE with the X. Would rather have the 8 which will be here month(s) sooner and get the revised X next year which would hopefully have touch ID under the glass and solve some of the other obvious flaws.

FYI, "Deeper Pixels" means one of two things:

1.) Deeper "deep trench isoation," OR MORE LIKELY,

2.) 10-bit (& possibly deeper) color (depth) !

I of course, assume it's #2 (obvious to those of you who know my position).

Exactly. Same idea as dropping the 6s and upgrading the SE, but exactly.

I don't know if you have compared other phones from any other vendor. But big bezels are passé. It looking so 2007 and nobody is using it anymore.
Sry, but I couldn't care less. Sometimes the emperor really is naked. In the 90s it was the mad pursuit of megahertz, then in the 00s it was megapixels, now it's the war on bezels. In no case did those trend wars translate to a meaningfully better user experience. Some bezel is good. Did you see how you have to "hold" your $1000 iPhone to use the whole screen? Better get a case because that sucker's going down. Only that'd create a bezel! At least the screw doesn't go around the sides of the phone like the Samsung one does. That's really crazy pills.

Go use the breathe app!
I'm calmly grumpy. At least that's what my AppleWatch says. lol

I find it disturbing that they've really had the balls to increase pricing on a refreshs-refreshs-refresh.
More CPU power nobody needs, same RAM, better camera with lots of buzzwords (would bet that real life differences are the same small incremental steps we've know for years) and more breakable back.

There is no reason at all for an increase.

There is no reason at all for an increase.
Sure there is. Why keep prices the same when you can make a tiny change and increase the price?

In seriousness though, Apple knows not everyone will spring for the X, so they release the same(ish) phone as the 8/+ and now people have the choice of old & affordable, old & okay w/ headphones, old & okay, new & okay, or the new hotness.
