Placed my order already. Looking forward to it.

I loved it when they were called 'Apple Computer'.

Don't get me wrong, I love the iPhone and some other stuff they have done, but I originally fell in love with Apple for its desktop machines. It's great and about time to see them focus on the Pro desktop again.

A little expensive, maybe not modular enough for everyone but that is quite a package (10Gbe!!!). Combine this with a new modular Mac Pro next year and they have a winner.

Good work Apple.

is someone able to find this wallpaper? it looks sick

The iMac Pro is great in that it shows Apple is capable of making a beast of a machine with the latest and greatest specifications. Unfortunately, this Mac ties our hands with a 27" display (which seems great, but somewhat small in the age of ultrawides) and no expandability.

You're almost there, Apple... take it one step further and give us the modular version of this that allows us to power our own displays.

Can see a lot of production houses adopting these things like wildfire. Very cool, and unexpected. Wonder if that keyboard is backlit, and also - surprised they didn't go all-in and make it TouchBar.

It's coming next year with the Mac Pro - and perhaps an Apple branded ultra-large display.

Might still happen by the time it actually ships.

I suspect that this is that Mac. I doubt Apple would release two separate types of Mac Pros. I wouldn't be surprised if little to nothing in the iMac Pro is upgradable. IMO, that's the real difference between a consumer computer and a "pro" computer: how upgradable it is. I've been able to continue building out my 2013 Mac Pro to keep it up to speed. I'm not that excited about the iMac Pro, but I'll reserve final judgment until I see the specs.

no, they're still building a newnewMacPro..

look at apple's press release for the iMac Pro :

https://www.apple.com/newsroom/2017/06/imac-pro-most-powerful-mac-arrives-december/

aside from announcing this new imac, it goes on to say:

In addition to the new iMac Pro, Apple is working on a completely redesigned, next-generation Mac Pro architected for pro customers who need the highest-end, high-throughput system in a modular design, as well as a new high-end pro display.

Curious to see how the heat management will work in that form factor.
Guess you didn't watch the keynote as they showed how the new cooling system moves significantly more air (I believe they said double) to keep the thing from melting.
My interpretation of MacSince1985's "see" is "experience first hand". In other words, will the thermal management really perform when stressed with something like DaVinci Resolve. It's a good point and my guess is Apple has solved it based on the presentation, but we've seen overheating iMacs before, so a little caution seems prudent.

I wonder if this will have a 120 Hz display? It seems odd that the iPad Pro was updated to have a 120 Hz display, but none of the Macs...

Then try understanding that Apple doesn't have good reason to update the mini at this time... else, they would update the stupid thing.

Get on with your life already.

They already said that they would update it, I'm just indicating that a suped-up iMac would be bottom of my list. Dope.

Sorry, but this is a waste of money. Let's say you get the bangin' 18 core model, most software can't take advantage of it during normal use. For ex. Cinema 4D can only utilize one core out of 18 during the creative process. Of course it'll use all 18 cores at render time but what's the point? That's what a render machine is for.

Only being able to use one of 18 cores greatly reduces the capability of how many objects you can work with in a scene. SO you're better off using a 4 Core machine to work and a multi core machine of 12+ to render.

The other lame factor of this thing is Radeon. They make good cards and they'll even be great when more simulations can handle OpenCL but Nvidia has CUDA which can scream through complicated simulations with ease.

Why can't there be choose in this matter? It's a pro machine right?

Lame, Lame, Lame, Lame.

Apple doesn't listen to it's pro users and never will.

the cool thing about it having 18core support is that you can be pretty sure it's going to run well as an 8-core configuration.. possibly no throttling with the lower core counts?

that said, i'm wondering why there's no 6-core option? seems like that would be the base model?
it's also the one i'd probably prefer as the 6core would likely have faster single core performance.

. If I'm doing 3D work, that Radeon Vega is fine now, but in 3 years I'm going to want a rendering upgrade.
in three years, you will get a rendering upgrade.. almost certainly.. and it will possibly be free or not very much money..
update your software.. your developers will give you the speed boosts.. (and if not, switch renderers ;) )

Well then! I'm tempted! That's a steep price but I'm willing to fork out for it considering how well made these machines are. Still using my 2011 iMac (maxed out of course).
Yea, I was liking my 2011 iMac too, up until last year when the video card died. Now I'm a little soured on the all-in-one concept.

It's called a hackintosh. Half the price, upgradeable and totally customizable. Been rocking several boxes for years myself.
You're welcome.

you heard that one about vegans?

How can you tell if someone is vegan?
don't worry, they'll ****ing tell you.

------
but just realized it works the same here:

How can you tell if someone uses hackintosh?

I'm impressed. Funny thing is, the current Mac Pro with the same configurations is the same price - except slower specs and minus a 27" 5K screen.... So there's that to think about.

As a film composer that works strictly in Logic Pro X, I welcome this new model. I've been an avid iMac user since the G5 era and I have to say I'd drop $4,999 on this product just because it meets all the needs I've been wanting - mostly faster RAM, more of it, and 8-cores. The 1TB SSD is nice and all but I run all my projects and software instruments on separate hard drives but to have 1 TB SSD as a base model option, I'm fine with that. Plus the 5K screen is another added bonus, even though it's not crucial to my work. It's just nice to have. PLUS they kept 4 USB 3.0 ports in addition to the 4 TB3 ports AND the SD Card Slot which is vital for transferring over audio files after a shoot. So I gotta hand it to Apple for at least listening to the prosumers that would want this because I'm sold. I'm sure the modular Mac Pro will be nice as well but for now, this'll do just fine.

This is clearly server class 18 Cores and GPU with Vega Architecture. 3TB Fusion Drive this iMac Pro is the Craziest Computer one can built at this price.

No Fusion Drive rubbish here, all flash drives only. 4Tb will do nicely, and I would have a top of the line one of these in a heartbeat, except that come December we'll be waiting for the new Mac Pro and a larger screen size will be the thing that tips me there instead.

My only disappointment with the iMac Pro so far is that I was hoping for a 30" display, or perhaps an ultrawidescreen (21:9) display.

Not interested. I don't want the $2k monitor included. I want a proper Pro, headless Mac. And yes, I am the kind of guy that will buy one.
I owned a
8500, 9500, G4, Mirrored front G4, G5 and a Dual 4 core Xeon that I have not replaced because I have an Avid audio system and I need the slots.

It might be the machine for some. Not for me.
[doublepost=1496722599][/doublepost]option 1, tell Avid to make HDX with Thunderbolt 3.

option 2, folk out another grand for a pcie chassis with Thunderbolt 3.

Option 3, go native.
