Apple have already announced that they are working on an all new fully modular Mac Pro.
I suspect that this is that Mac. I doubt Apple would release two separate types of Mac Pros. I wouldn't be surprised if little to nothing in the iMac Pro is upgradable. IMO, that's the real difference between a consumer computer and a "pro" computer: how upgradable it is. I've been able to continue building out my 2013 Mac Pro to keep it up to speed. I'm not that excited about the iMac Pro, but I'll reserve final judgment until I see the specs.

Not interested. I don't want the $2k monitor included. I want a proper Pro, headless Mac. And yes, I am the kind of guy that will buy one.
I owned a
8500, 9500, G4, Mirrored front G4, G5 and a Dual 4 core Xeon that I have not replaced because I have an Avid audio system and I need the slots.

It might be the machine for some. Not for me.

Your suspicion is dead wrong.

The iMac Pro is more powerful than the 2013 Mac Pro, but that just means the 2018 Mac Pro - WHICH APPLE HAS CONFIRMED IS COMING - will be a real beast.

Well you have 6-12 months to save the five figures that beast is going to cost when it does arrive. :)

Bring the complaints about price from those that have no reasonable use for the power this thing offers.

I run the most fast iMac Apple makes (before today) and when I import 300 gigabytes of 4K video for my 1,000 subscriber YouTube Channel, it takes 4 hours to copy / import it into Final Cut Pro and then 1.5 days to analyze / transcode the video .

Then starts the editing for 2-3 20 minute videos from the video I shot. Final Cut Pro will stutter, eat up all of the RAM and act all pissy and crash once per session (luckily, no data corruption)

then I download some 1080P video and use Handbrake to transcode it to work with Synology / Plex and I never get more than 25FPS doing this kind of work.

----

I'm not a pro customer. I'm a home customer but my work in Lightroom RAW images off my Canon 5D, 4K videos in final cut pro and my occasional gaming (Civilization VI), the top of the line iMac suffers.

Apple has introduced a faster iMac that actually meets my needs and it's $1,000 more than I paid for this one and that's their base model. It's ridiculous. I don't make money with my work on these machines but I love this kind of thing.

I find it hard to believe they couldn't make this machine for less than 5 grand.

Why couldn't they offer i9 processors and non-ECC memory? I really hope the entry level machine has a minimum 8-core Xeon processor and a top-of-the-line Vega GPU to justify $5,000.

Seems to be Apple's jump the shark machine. Yes, sick specs. Locked into screen. Not upgradable except externally. There can't be a huge market for this. Where is the headless Pro machine that at least can be minimally upgraded with RAM, storage, and GPU when the time comes along with flexibility in picking the video config. needed.

I just realized, this is not the replacement for the Mac Pro. This is a stop gap solution. Of course it is a bit interesting as it won't come out till December. Which makes me wonder, when the F is the new Mac Pro is coming out? lol
OK it doesn't affect me as I can't afford to buy any new computer right now, but still.
Anyway, it looks good in paper, but let's wait till December.

I wonder if this fails under cognitive dissonance.
You suspect this new iMac Pro is the new Mac Pro, even though the new Mac Pro is confirmed to be upgradable and modular. The iMac Pro is called iMac Pro, while the Mac Pro, Mac Pro. The iMac Pro is out in December, while the Mac Pro is out next year. While you have facts stating they are not the same, you want to believe they are the same.
Which is extra weird to me as it is not the first time that Apple has two different lines of similar system out. Funnily enough if you have noticed, the Macbook Air just got a small upgrade too. Funny how that continues and is supported when the very think and small new Macbooks are out for a while now.
Anyway, fascinating to see how minds work.

i9's do not offer ECC RAM which is important for many of the disciplines that shell out the money for Xeon-powered workstations like this.

I bet they sell a shedload.

2018 when the new Mac Pro ships.

128GB ECC RAM in 2017 .... yawn

The Mac Mini serves no function in the modern Apple ecosystem. I'm surprised they still offer it.

Sorry, you're going to have to spell that one out for me.

The one product I would buy immediately if it were refreshed with Quad-core Kaby Lake, USB-C/Thunderbolt 3, and upgradable RAM.

Probably 'me too', dependent on the price.

I use mine as a headless media server as well as a movie player connected to my projector. I have no need for the built in display of the iMac. The Mac mini is perfect for this. Too bad it croaks playing 4k HEVC videos. My Sony uhd player that cost $273 can play the HEVC 4k HDR flawlessly. I am now using the Mac mini for just serving.

This five grand iMac is phenomenal and looks like a powerhouse. The Mac Mini had no expectation of being updated today anyways. The iMac was rumored to be updated multiple times during WWDC today.

I think you aren't reading what I am writing, so I'll try a bit harder for you. I can't believe they put time and effort into a five grand iMac when they obviously can't get their arses in gear to update the Mac mini - which is well overdue for an update.

Although, by the same token I still can't believe that they ever released the 'dustbin' Mac Pro.
