Wow what kind of channel options are those? Big cable companies are really preventing Apple from progress.

That's at launch. Once Apple gets a good user base with Apple TV +, they'll be in a much better negotiating position.

Not dumping SlingTV anytime soon, but if I can save $ subscribing just to the channels I watch, I'd switch.

(yawn)

Doesn't even touch the other offerings out there.

(as expected)

Doesn't even bother me as I'm sure Apple's streaming quality and consistency would totally blow compared to the likes of YouTubeTV and Google, who flat out knows how to do this..

So how did YouTube, Sling, Hulu and many others do it?

I think there's a full on media revolt against Apple (and their terms most likely).

The power is already too consolidated and getting into bed with Apple usually works out great for one party - Apple.

Apart from HBO, Starz and Showtime, this is a pathetic channel line up. Not switching from my YouTube TV any time soon.

The content is the same no matter where you go, with the exception of original programming on NetFlex and HULU,
but, Apple is oftering you true al a carte programming that a lot people are complain about. You just pick and choose
what you want and don't have to take the whole package...

Or refuse to pay for any of it.

Exactly....

If you refuse to pay for content, why should the content providers make it for you?

I'm not saying the prices today are fair, but to expect content to always be zero will cause people to not pay to create content.

It doesn't look like they made any improvements that will make me use the TV App more?

Current AppleTV TV app seems convinced my Vue subscription has CBS shows included, it doesn't, and does the same for my (older) cordcutter parents. Having to explain to them repeatedly that the CBS shows are only in the TabloTV app is a PITA.

Would have loved to see support added for TabloTV?

Would have loved to have seen more control over what each section displays, more granular preferences. Let me turn off everything I just really don't want in my way? Because that's what half of the app is right now. In my way.

Users/Profiles would have been a much welcome improvement.. Sadly..

The channel offerings are fine, for what they are? I'd rather see this grow into "Show me what I need to have to watch these things" (SciFI, Motorsports, local broadcast stations) Then, show me the cheapest way to get there.

Seems convoluted as Hell to have AppleTV Channels and AppleTV+ together, but separate, in the TV app with iTunes content and Vue/Hulu/etc content... I wonder how many less than savvy (yes, older) users will end up paying for things they really didn't want? I don't think many users want the TV app to be a store? Don't show me what I don't have, show me what I already have... That would be, you know, Insanely Great? Maybe they didn't present it in the best way, or is it really going to be as convoluted as it seemed?

Oh well.

The move towards being pre-installed on TVs makes so much sense. But will probably signal the end of the Apple TV hardware in 2-3 years.
Indeed. But it's not like they really invested into improving it over the years. I had much more expectations, especially regarding their tvOS. There's a lot of untouched potential there.

Great - because that's what I really wanted to get from Apple - streaming services and News magazines - and yet another credit card... Probably all with Siri, the dumbest assistant ever.

Remember those days when Steve Jobs was INNOVATING?

I'm a man of simple needs.

Could I just get a smaller flagship iPhone and MacBooks with reliable keyboards?

I might even use the "credit card" to pay for it Apple! Who knows! lol

The problem is that the studios don't want to suffer the same fate as the music industry.

As much as I like Bon Jovi, I hated when he complained about iTunes, because people didn't have to but a whole album (on CD) to get a single song that they wanted (yes, I know there were singles back in the day).

That's what the current industry is. A few good shows propping up all the crappy shows that wouldn't be able to carry themselves if people had to pay for them individually.

Cable gives us the impression that they are offering us a smorgasbord of entertainment, when in actuality there are a few tasty dishes and hundreds of gag-inducing sides.

You don’t have to use them. But it’s the companies making graphics cards etc aren’t producing great new stuff that quietly and Apple isn’t ready to launch their car software, AR/VR etc

Can I record / TiVo / etc? Thanks
What do you need to record? Have you tried any of the streaming services that aim to replace traditional cable? Most allow recording, or you can just load up an episode and watch it - like Hulu w/commercial free, the next day you just find the show and watch, no commercials, nothing.

The new app is an updated version of the existing TV app, which brings together shows, movies, sports, news, and more in one hub, available on iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, and later this year on Mac and smart TVs.

This is actually the best about today's news! Finally, an era will come to an end. This will be the beginning of the end of iTunes on the Mac and presumably PC. When they release the Apple TV app on the Mac, there is no longer a reason to have Films and TV shows within iTunes. I believe I even saw that they have integrated the iTunes Store (will probably no longer be called that way) in that new TV App.
Without the Video part, iTunes will only consist of Music, Podcasts and Audiobooks. It will then be pretty easy to further split it up and match iOS with a standalone Podcasts app and Audiobooks simply being integrated into the Books app.

This will allow Apple to fully ditch iTunes and port over the Music app from iOS (hopefully with more functionality).

I have waited for this moment for so long and now is the first time that I actually believe it will truly happen this year. Especially with Marzipan on the horizon.

Apple will probably just get rid of the whole iTunes brand, the stores for TV shows and movies will be integrated into the TV app and the store for music will be integrated into the Music app. There is no need to call it iTunes Store anymore (this will also delete the app on iOS).

Guys, this is so exciting :D

Apple TV really needs individual user profiles. My “up next” is over crowded with my daughter’s shows.

Ditto. For the TV app to be really useful for me would take Plex integration.

And Netflix integration.

And to play content within the TV app, not just ‘open in’.

And to let me set default ‘open in’ actions.

In fact no, I’ll stick with Plex.

So I’m guessing this is US only, and nice to see it has tracking features so it can suggest shows to you, exactly like the evil Amazon and Foogle do....

Waste of time though if it’s US only which it seems to be?

All I need to know is what countries are things available, why is that so hard?

p.s.: it seems this service is expanding, is going to be available 100 (unnamed) countries https://9to5mac.com/2019/03/25/apple-tv-app-upgrade-subscriptions/

Did they mention cost at all? What am I paying individually for each of these channels?

you're paying the same thing you would pay if you were to subscribe to any of these channels today on your Apple TV or Fire or Roku or whatever Google calls it or any other of the dozens of devices that allow you to subscribe to independent channels and aggregates them into 1 view. there is 100% nothing new here.
